Gonna get this off my chest: the sexualised marketing of Katseye is weird as fuck and I'm tired of seeing fans call people 'delusional' and 'prudes' and even misogynists for being rightfully concerned about what a mega-label is putting very young artists through.
Yoonchae just turned 18 a few weeks ago. For much of her career (so far) she's been a minor. Megan is 19. The others are 20-23. Most of them are new to the industry and have very little hand in how their music is put out (we aren't talking about people like I-dle, or BTS, or Svt, who've very obviously curated their own releases for themselves). Yes we often hear the Katseye girls gushing over their projects but it's still something that's chosen for them.
Right, so what kind of stuff is Hybe/Geffen making these girls release?
"You've got everybody's eyes undressing you" said while making them dance in skintight outfits
Sampled porn sounds in gnarly
^This is, mind you, willingly revealed by the people who worked on the song.
Choreography involves the Katseye girls bending down and peering between their legs while lipsyncing a moaning sound from the aforementioned sample.
Slapping another member's ass. Yes, part of the choreography.
Flies fucking in the background.
Room spray collab release with (and I quote) 'the fresh breath of a katseye member' and their kiss mark on a paper that comes with the product.
Revealing outfits, twerking: This one's a bit of a grey area. I don't think they're inherently sexual, more like society sexualised this way of acting/dressing. And I'm all for artists not giving a fuck what society thinks, but based on all the bullets points I've listed above, I think it's a pretty safe bet to say that the producers are playing into the sexualised connotations rather than bravely disregarding it.
Now if one more katseye fan says "but they like dressing this way! Look at their own styles pre-debut!" or "I'm 17 and I love dancing like this so stfu!"......I swear I might just flip out. Dancing in your own home or infront of friends and family is so. fucking. different. from being told to dance this way by a mega corporation.
If a 17 year old (Or a 16 year old. Whatever) wants to dance to a sexualised song at her party in front of her friend group? Completely fine! Have fun! If a 17 year old decides to post that online? Eh... worried for her, but still none of my business. But if a 17 year old gets told by grown ass adults to dress in a skimpy outfit and lipsync a porn sample on stage? And then get that filmed and plastered on the internet forever so that billionaires can earn a huge profit from their work? Now I'm fucking disgusted. The fact that people do not see a difference in these actions is baffling to me.
And hybe/geffen, as well as the portion of their fanbase who'll eat this shit up uncritically, are already trying to sweep this under the rug. The youngest just turned 18 to the delight of all involved. People just cannot wait to wave this magic number the next time someone expresses their rightful worry about artist exploitation. They've already tested this playbook with Eunchae and Le sserafim a few years back.
And they've done this to almost every. single. girlgroup that's somewhat affiliated with them. New Jeans (minors, btw) got Cookie which was one giant sexual innuendo packaged in metaphors. Illit (also with minors) got their own Cookie 2.0 with the Tick tack english version. Eunchae had a laundry list of oversexualisation controversies when she was a minor. And now we've got Katseye. It's a pattern of behaviour with these people, but sure, let's give them the benefit of doubt and believe that they've got their artist's best interest at heart and are simply acting as a vessel for their wishes, instead of actively curating young and impressionable women into a sexualised image.
