In April 1911, Bourdelle wrote to friends: "I am meditating making a new large figure so as not to lose the habit of it, and this without haste, because I have models ready for ten years." This new meditation gives substance to the dying Centaur, of which there are two versions, one bearded, the other beardless. This masterpiece is the transposition of The Death of the Last Centaur, a fresco on which Bourdelle was then working for the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées and which he admits to be "the closest to [his] sensibility." bourdelle.paris.fr
