there’s something so ingenious about how Yes Minister’s fundamental core is about things never changing no matter what. sitcoms always adhere to a status quo but in Yes Minister the whole episode is about precisely how Sir Humphrey is going to make sure that the status quo is preserved. It’s literally baked into the show. and like, in the narrative, from the point of view of Jim trying to enact new policies it’s obviously not a good thing, but for me as a sitcom enjoyer, as someone who finds refuge in comedies, it’s somehow deeply comforting to have to have frightening notions of change elegantly squashed every episode.
