When we think of marine life, we usually picture colorful coral reefs or dense seaweed forests filled with fish and other critters. The ocean that comes to mind is the one touched by sunlight. However, most of the ocean is not like that. By volume, roughly 95% of the ocean consists of the permanently dark, cold deep sea. Despite such hostile conditions though, there is life in the ocean's abyss.

Researchers have discovered how acids on the surface of bacteria give these microscopic organisms their characteristic "rod" shape—by keeping an enzyme at bay that would otherwise turn the cylindrical cells into shape-shifting blobs. The findings, published in Nature Microbiology, provide a new understanding of how bacteria control their growth and offer insights into the nature of Earth's earliest life forms. The study also points to a strategy for overcoming antibiotic resistance by targeting wall teichoic acids, the enigmatic molecules that coat the surface of certain bacteria.

A study by researchers at Duke University School of Medicine identifies a new way that G protein–coupled receptors (GPCRs)—targets of roughly one-third of FDA-approved drugs—control signaling in cells. The paper is published in the journal Nature.

A study by researchers at The University of Manchester, carried out alongside the Universities of Melbourne and Copenhagen, could hold the key to understanding the causes of long-term health problems, such as infertility and ovarian cancer. The study, published in PRX Life, used a combination of high-resolution imaging, flow measurements, and mathematical modeling to examine fluid flows around corals that are driven by cilia—densely packed tiny hairs on the coral's surface. The collective beating of the cilia contributes to the movement of fluid around the surface of the coral, regulating the animal's immediate environment through the transport of particles such as oxygen.

A University of Texas at Austin-led team has reconstructed the most detailed map to date of the molecular machines that carried out the functions of life in an ancient ancestor that gave rise to all complex life on Earth, including us, shedding new light on genetic causes of human diseases. This representation of protein networks, known as the protein interactome and published in Cell Genomics, is like a treasure map the researchers have used to dig up hundreds of genes that weren't previously known to be associated with human diseases. Using animal models and human patient data, they have already confirmed for the first time that three of these genes are connected to rare disorders. The work could potentially lead to new targets for treating a host of other diseases.

Right on the brink of black hole formation, spacetime can get downright peculiar. This is where familiar physics can become unnervingly strange, and understanding how cosmic processes play out often requires more esoteric math and creative solutions. Now, physicists have mathematically described, for the first time, a quirk of spacetime geometry at the black hole formation threshold.

An international research team has discovered that the fire salamander (Salamandra salamandra) is biofluorescent. A study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science shows that the salamander reflects turquoise light when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. This phenomenon had gone unnoticed until now, despite decades of research on this amphibian species.

Our home galaxy didn't pop into existence all at once. The Milky Way was formed gradually, as smaller galaxies, or dwarf galaxies, were subsumed into our own galaxy over billions of years. It turns out that the stars leftover from these dwarf galaxies still share characteristics, and scientists are getting better at identifying them. By studying their similarities, scientists use these stars to determine their galaxies of origin. A team of astronomers say that they have identified a sample of these 20 stars that — due to their similar features — may have grown up together in a dwarf galaxy which the researchers have dubbed "Loki."

A research team led by Professor Jin Yong Lee from the Department of Chemistry of Sungkyunkwan University, with co-first author HyoungChul Ham, and in collaboration with research teams from Korea University and the National University of Singapore, has developed a next-generation phototherapeutic agent, "NDI-COE." This agent induces pyroptosis (inflammatory cell death) in hypoxic tumor tissues by directly oxidizing intracellular water. The oligoelectrolyte was designed to overcome the oxygen-dependency limits of conventional photodynamic therapy by intercalating into the cell membrane to oxidize water. The research is published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Urea is an extremely important chemical, especially for fertilizers. But, making urea is energy intensive and relies heavily on fossil fuels. However, new findings from Griffith University and the Queensland University of Technology have highlighted new ways to produce urea electrochemically, using electricity and waste gases such as carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxides (NO) instead. The paper, "Machine Learning-Assisted Design Framework of Carbon Edge-Dominated Dual-Atom Catalysts for Urea Electrosynthesis," has been published in ASC Nano.

A University of Michigan study suggests that the nitrile and latex gloves scientists commonly use could be causing microplastics levels to appear higher than they actually are. Researchers found that these gloves can unintentionally transfer particles onto lab tools used to analyze air, water, and other environmental samples. The contamination comes from stearates, which are not plastics but can closely resemble them during testing. Because of this, scientists may be detecting particles that are not true microplastics. To reduce this issue, U-M researchers Madeline Clough and Anne McNeil recommend using cleanroom gloves, which release far fewer particles.

A hundred million years ago during the late Cretaceous period, the oceans were filled with giant predators, prowling for their next meal. There was the mosasaur — a giant toothy marine reptile (and a surprise hero in Jurassic World). There were large sharks. And now, in the journal Science, researchers present evidence for ancient colossal octopuses — what they believe are the largest invertebrates ever described. Using innovative fossil reconstruction techniques, the researchers revealed remnants of two extinct species locked inside large rocks. They appear to have been up to 60-feet long — longer than a school bus — rivaling other apex predators of the time, and calling to mind the Kraken of legend.

Long after the high is gone, illegal drugs linger in the environment. Cocaine and its breakdown products, for example, are found in rivers and lakes worldwide. And like children living with secondhand smoke, wildlife in polluted waters—including tiny crustaceans, fish, and even sharks—can’t help but take up these drugs. Less is known about the impact. In laboratory studies, water fleas exposed to cocaine swim faster and crayfish will venture behind their hiding places, a risky behavior in nature. Now, a research team has conducted the first experiment with fish in the wild. The findings, published today in Current Biology, show salmon exposed to cocaine and its main byproduct roam more widely. “It is an important and very interesting study,” says Mark Servos, an ecotoxicologist at the University of Waterloo who was not involved.

Researchers have identified a potential breakthrough for traumatic brain injuries (TBI) using a freeze-dried blood product called “Thrombosomes.” Originally designed for battlefield hemorrhage, this product has demonstrated a unique ability to stabilize damaged blood vessels in the brain, reducing both immediate bleeding and the dangerous brain swelling (edema) that typically follows days later. The study suggests that these shelf-stable platelets outperform fresh platelets in protecting the “leaky” vessels associated with TBI, providing a much-needed tool for ambulances and remote clinics.

Whether poop speeds through your gut like a bullet train or takes a more smell-the-roses approach could have more profound implications for your overall health than a first glance would suggest. According to a 2023 review that combined data from dozens of studies, distinct differences can be observed between the gut microbiomes of 'speeders' and 'slowpokes'. Since the human gut microbiome is intrinsically linked to health, this could have implications that have gone unnoticed before now. In particular, slow transit times and constipation have been linked with metabolic and inflammatory disorders, as well as neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease.

The same neurotransmitter commonly leveraged to relieve symptoms of depression and anxiety also may exacerbate a vexing condition known as tinnitus, according to new research published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Tinnitus is a constant sensation of ringing or buzzing in the ears, creating a continual irritation for some and severe anxiety for others. Global prevalence is estimated to be as high as 14%, with many severely affected.
