Speaking of the dialectic of "civilization" and "wilderness," I once bounced around the idea of running an old-school D&D campaign set in the Finnish late iron age/early middle ages because I think it would unironically allow for playing with that juxtaposition while also being able to put elves and dwarves in Tavastia or something, the idea being that one side of the wider campaign level conflict would be represented by Sweden/Christianity/feudalism and the latter by Finnic peoples/folk faith/tribal society. It might be a bit trite but I genuinely think there's still something worth exploring there.
