thinking out loud
op!?!?!?!? this helped me resist big relapse impulse tonight bless u bless u
so, this is what iâve done all day apparently
this is a fantastic guide, A++
I think Iâve reblogged this before, but here it is again for those of you who may be new to the disc or just have only read a few books.
I regret that transcribing every single one of these slides for those of you with difficult with images would take a lot of time and space. Itâs a comprehensive guide to reading discworld by tumblr user @blackboard-monitor and contains their opinion of the best books to start with and what reading order to use. HOWEVER if you do want this information written down for you, either in part or in whole, feel free to send me an ask/message and I will make the effort. In one of the slides, blackboard-monitor also invites the reader to ask for advice via ask so Iâm assuming they would also happily transcribe it for you.
happy reading!
To quote Jesus when asked about whether attractive women could be to blame for adultery: âIf thine eye offends thee, pluck it outâ.

People believe that Europe didnât have martial arts like Asia did but thatâs not true. We had martial arts but centred around weapons because unlike in Asia, anyone could carry a weapon. We never had to invent bare-handed martial arts for fighting armed opponents.
Also - there were guides for âhow to fight an armored opponent if all you have is a stupid sword that wonât pierce themâ.
And FYI the answer to this is âbash him with the pommelâ.
Also - shields can be used to kill. Just sayinâ.
Thank you to listen to this little trivia.
Asia - Two wizened sages staring at each other caressing their long beards before unleashing a flurry of deadly blows and one of them falls over elegantly, defeated
Europe - âAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!â screams a man as he repeatedly smashes a knight with the pommel of his sword âDIE ALREADY!â
Thatâs why the Misericorde was invented!
When youâve smashed your opponent so many times that his armour, and especially the helmet started resembling a crushed can, but you could still hear the poor sod wheezing and gurgling somewhere in there, then you would probably feel sorry for him. As a good Christian and what not. So you took this thin little bugger:
And pushed it into some crack in or opening in the armour to give your enemy a mercy kill.
Huh I never really thought of medieval swordfighting as a martial art, but it makes sense. Shame itâs pretty much lost to history though
âGet Downâ remains one of my favorite memes of all time and I am DEEPLY gratified to see the new generation grabbing it.
when youâre standing in front of a solid object and someone says fus roh dah
Iâm in love
The woman in black is Loora Wang, sheâs a fashion design and she uses tiktok to show off her clothes. I havenât been able to track down the name of the woman in red but sheâs in most of the videos Loora posts, and a lot of them are just as cute as the umbrella one
Ok we know Loora Wang is a badass, but how adorable is her companion? Like look at that silly goof!
You cannot get mad at your significant other for expressing what upsets them. You canât. Even if it isnât deep to you, it may be a serious matter to them. Theyâre upset for a reason. Genuine consideration is key.
And if theyâre expressing that something youâve done has upset them you cannot tell them how theyâre wrong. No. That is not okay.
Iâm losing sleep over this at the moment.
If someone who claims to love you says the problem isnât the fact that their actions hurt you, but the way youâre experiencing or expressing that hurt - or that youâre expressing it at all - then something is drastically wrong.
(I mean, yes, clearly there are ways this can be exploited to control or abuse; a partner who is upset by your boundaries or autonomy is not someone you can have a healthy relationship with. Conversely but just as clearly, they donât get to be abusive to you in expressing that upset.
But thatâs the genuine consideration bit - genuine consideration doesnât mean having to agree with everything they say, or that their pain overrides every other aspect of the situation, but that you both try your best to own your shit and approach painful situations with compassion, respect, and self -awareness.)
literally how my brain works

What yâall think âgifted childâ discourse is saying: I used to be special and now Iâm not and that makes me sad.
What âgifted childâ discourse is ACTUALLY saying: The way many educational systems treat children whoâve been identified as âgiftedâ is actively harmful in that it a. obliges kids to give up socialising with their same-age peers in favour of constantly courting the approval of adult âmentorsâ who mostly donât give a shit about them, b. demands that they tie their entire identity to a set of standards thatâs not merely unsustainable, but intentionally so, because its unstated purpose is to weed out the âunworthyâ rather than to provide useful goals for self-improvement, and c. denies them opportunities to learn useful life skills in favour of training them up in an excruciatingly narrow academic skill-set thatâs basically useless outside of an institutional career path that the vast majority of them will never be allowed to pursue.
also: the way âgiftedâ children are taught largely just rewards them for already knowing things or having a specific skill come easily to them, and thus not only gives them severe anxiety about asking for help or not knowing something right away for fear of disappointing those adult mentors, but also actively discourages them from learning HOW to learn things and pick up new skills, thus sabotaging any life they might try to pursue outside of that institutional career.
Plus, not only is it possible to be âtwice exceptionalâ - aka âgiftedâ and have a disability that can make learning more difficult - if youâre âgiftedâ, people usually donât notice you have a disability.
So you spend your life split between being academically smart and then also unable to do basic, day-to-day functions and being told that youâre âtoo smart to struggle with thisâ.
Like, I do believe that neurotypical âgiftedâ kids are also fucked up by the system, but the majority of people who I personally know who complained about the system turned out to be neurodivergent in some way but didnât know when they originally started in âgifted childâ discourse.
And Iâm going to take a stab and say that the people hit the hardest by this are probably women with ADHD, as their presentation usually looks like their life falling apart at/post-uni.
So you can spend your entire life being told youâre definitely going to succeed - and usually youâre pushed to specific career/life goals - and then overnight, your life falls apart and you canât figure out why.
And Iâm going to take a stab and say that the people hit the hardest by this are probably women with ADHD, as their presentation usually looks like their life falling apart at/post-uni.
A carbon-free world can be a reality. What would that mean for our jobs, homes and lives?
âIs it possible to turn things around by 2050? The answer is absolutely yes,â says Kai Chan, a professor at the Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability at the University of British Columbia.
Many scientists have been telling us how the world will look like, if we donât act now. However, others, like Chan, are tracking what success might look like.
They are not simply day-dreamers either. They arenât being too optimistic. They are putting together road maps for how to safely get to the planet envisioned in the 2015 Paris Agreement, where temperatures hold at 1.5 degrees Celsius higher than before we started burning fossil fuels, this article from July states.
âThree decades is enough to do a lot of important things. In the next few yearsâif we get started on themâthey will pay dividends in the coming decades,â says Chan, the lead author of the chapter on achieving a sustainable future in a recent UN report that predicted the possible extinction of a million species.
Making these changes wonât mean years of being poor, cold and hungry before things get comfortable again, the scientists insist. They say that if we start acting seriously NOW, we stand a decent chance of transforming society without huge disruption.Â
No doubt, it will take a massive switch in societyâs energy use. But without us noticing, thatâs already happening. Not fast enough, maybe, but it is. Solar panels and offshore wind power plummet in price. Iceland and Paraguay have stripped the carbon from their grids, according to a new energy outlook report from Bloomberg. Europe is on track to be 90 per cent carbon-free by 2040. And Ottawa says that Canada is already at 81 per cent, thanks to hydro, nuclear, wind and solar.Â
Decarbonizing the whole economy is within grasp. We can do this.
âIf we have five years of really sustained efforts, making sure we reorient our businesses and our governments toward sustainability, then from that point on, this transition will seem quite seamless. Because it will just be this gradual reshaping of options,â Chan says, adding: âAll these things seem very natural when the system is changing around you.â
