I think a lot of people underestimate how essential a dash of wild tonal dissonance is to the classic JRPG experience. Going directly from engaging in high-stakes politicking to doing a Three Stooges routine with a sapient octopus or following up a life-or-death battle against a star-spawned elder god with an inexplicable beach episode where you exchange catty barbs with the career war criminal who was performing medical experiments on your party healer earlier that morning isn’t just a sideshow, it’s part of what makes the whole thing work.

(This is also where most Western titles that try to parody the classic JRPG formula all short. They’re up there shouting “look at us, we’re IRREVERENT” while failing to achieve the level of casual absurdism that their source material indulges in as a matter of course!)
