One of my favorite things about Garak is that they wrote such a realistic former spy. I mean, he’s not 007. He’s not a super genius with an instant correct answer to everything and a black belt in six ways to kill with his left ring finger. Garak consistently can’t solve problems instantly (oops, my code only lets me go through doors. Sorry, Major), and he gets his ass kicked a lot because he is middle aged and his history of assassinating people probably didn’t include killing them in hand to hand combat (that would be pretty stupid and inefficient).  He was a gardener on Romulus to kill one guy. An entire persona, months of down time and toiling in the dirt and living the actual life of a working class Cardassian nobody…just to assassinate one dude. That’s like straight from CIA reality. “Oh, you’re a spy? What cool stuff have you been doing?” “Well…I was a convenience store clerk for 14 months just to get a picture of one target having a 10 second conversation with another target in the parking lot.”  When you consider the reality of what Garak’s former life was like, you can better appreciate how well he controlled his violent eye rolls during Our Man Bashir.
