This is an awesome use of what is probably a master's degree if not a doctorate and I am 100% thrilled that she shared it even though it was embarrassing and she squeaked.
Thank you, adorable scientist, for making people's lives better.
As an Australian, THIS WOMAN IS A FUCKING GODSEND.
this is Hannah Fry, Professor of the Public Understanding of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge and president of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
"kids are so whiny and annoying" you want them to be dependent on adults and obedient and silent and convenient but also independent and not needing anything but also without any sense of autonomy and agency but also going outside and getting off their damn phones but also staying inside so they don't get into trouble but also recognizing they have it good but also that the new generation is mindless and stupid but also just say what they want in clear and emotionally mature words but also stop asking for things AND you want them to not be pissy about it? get real
when the capitalists die out either thru global warming or revolution will we be able to start homegrown internet
been reading about dual power and how to grow my own tomatoes and i’m wondering how and if we’ll be able to start commie internet lol
like obviously the internet is this huge electric capitalist controlled hardware infrastructure thing so after all that shuts down is there a way to do it ourselves lol
i want to come home from a hard day on the communal allotment, kiss my Wife, crank up my generator, and start sharing meams!
GOOD NEWS: the homegrown commie internet is in the works! Across the world, people fighting against censorship and for a more democratic internet are building mesh networks (meshnets) of long-range wifi (LoRa)
Since wifi is just a standard for sending data through radio waves, and radio waves can go a pretty long way if you use ‘em right, it’s not that difficult to connect two computers by wifi from across town. Then you just keep adding more computers to the network and you’ve got internet!
Small antennae, like for connecting across the neighborhood, can literally be built out of trash
And a larger, more accurate one can be built pretty cheap too
(You can also reuse an old satellite TV dish, or really anything else that’s roughly parabolic)
There are LoRa meshnets in places like New York, India, and all over Europe: Spain (pictured below), Greece, Austria, Germany, etc
As for sharing fresh mëmês, the network to go to is Scuttlebutt. Unlike most social media, Scuttlebutt posts are stored on your computer and sent directly to your friends’ computers (rather than being stored on the cloud and sent to a central server). It works just fine over traditional internet, but you can also view and interact with it offline, and it has protocols for connecting over any means that two computers can share information - that includes LoRa, as well as hardwired connections, sneakernet (basically mailing a USB stick back and forth), etc
What that means is you always know that your info is just as safe as the network it’s sent on and the computer that receives it - no one even theoretically has the ability to collect and sell it all. And, since it’s all run on your computer, there’s no servers to go down or companies to go out of business that could destroy the whole thing
You can read more about this kind of stuff here (or here if it’s cloudy in Barcelona)!
there’s also the work being done by the DCPT, left-behind Detroiters meshing together their neighborhoods to share overpriced high-speed connections among the community and producing these good good educational documents, especially this rad resource page. building meshnets to share a global uplink is very similar to building meshnets for the purpose of intracommunication and these resources are useful in both cases
I’ve had a couple people ask about how to join/organize something like this, which is great! The best list of active projects I know of is here, though you should also do a search online if you don’t see one in your area in case they missed it. For those without a nearby group, put a pin here and try contacting nearby pins as well - you can use the instructions on buildyourowninter.net as well as the DCPT’s resources as linked above to get set up!
Please reblog this version so others can get involved!
When I get blood samples at work sometimes they’re still warm from being imminently inside the patient’s veins and my hands are always cold because all the labs Ive work in are in the basement and they keep it kinda cold for whatever reason (and I’m also just a chilly kid).
And I clutch the little warm tubes of blood and feel this sick person warming my hands and I think about how kind you might be and how I wish I could hold your hand and how badly, how really really badly, I want you to get better and stay warm and hold someone’s hand again.
And anyway sometimes it’s better to not think so vividly about the people I’m doing tests for. I’m a good little cog in a vast machine of people all trying to heal and cure, and my cog feels so fucking small sometimes. But I hope the blood I prepare for you helps you breathe better and laugh and wake up feeling well rested.
We’ve never met but you warmed my hands and I want you to know I love you and I’m rooting for you.

tbh a lot of my advice boils down to “hey you know that terrible horrible looming thing you’re doing your best to avoid and distract and escape as much as possible but no matter what you do it just keeps looming and looming and ruining your life”
“just, fuckign, run straight at it screaming.”

“My Monster Under the Bed” continuation
(This story was a prompt from @writing-prompt-s written by @bethanythemartian, and this is my continuation.)
The main reason I don’t like talking about it is because you have no idea how hard it was to explain it to the police. Do you really think anyone would believe “the monster under my bed ate an intruder”? Yeah, probably not.
His screams alerted all the neighbors, and I had to fabricate some story about how I was watching a horror movie and it was the screams of both the movie and I. The hard part was coming up with what horror movie I was watching, and I think I went with Scream or something.
The harder part was coming back to my room once they left and dealing with what was left of the intruder. They practically spit him out from under the bed, shaking and whimpering. I couldn’t help but feel bad for the guy. He seemed to be fine, aside from being obviously traumatized and missing his left foot.

I'm watching a talk by Svante Pääbo from 2014 and drowning in my emotions.
Did you know that the first Neanderthal DNA sequencing we did was of a sample taken from the humerus of the type specimen, Feldhofer 1 (also called Neanderthal 1)?
because I did not know that
What I did know is that the Neander Valley (Neanderthal in German) where the fossils were found was named for Joachim Neander, whose surname is a Greco-Romanization of Neumann, which yes, means "new man"
the New Man was found in New Man Valley in 1856
and in 2010, we found fragments of mitochondrial DNA in the New Man's bones
Pääbo brings up that a question he and his team got asked a lot was "is 1-2% Neanderthal DNA a lot or a little?" and his response is going to haunt me for weeks.
He shows a diagram and explains that, well, you share 50% genetic similarity with your parents, and 25% similarity with your grandparents... roughly 12% with your great-grandparents, and 6% with your twice-greats... 3% with your thrice-great grandparents, and 1.5% with your fourth-great grandparents
So, he says, if you look at it quantitatively, it would be as if one of your ancestors six generations ago were a Neanderthal.
I need to express how utterly insane that is to think about.
It's been ~40,000 years since the extinction of the Neanderthals and the end of any fresh influxes of genetic material from their species.
Every time in the last ~40,000 years that human chromosomes have recombined and divided into sperm and egg cells, some of our inherited Neanderthal sequences were, statistically, going to get lost. They would have ended up on a sperm or egg cell that was not used in the creation of offspring, and fall out of the lineage. And yes, lost sequences could be "added back" by someone from a different lineage who still carried them, but...
It's been, again, roughly forty thousand years since we had the chance to get new Neanderthal DNA, or get back "lost" sequences from one of them.
Assuming 20-year generations, that's two thousand generations of humans.
And yet, quantitatively, the average person alive today is six generations' worth of genetic similarity away from a Neanderthal.
I need to express
how utterly insane that
is to think about.

DIY that shit 👍🏻
here are my stages of book editing:
draft 0 - the complete text, without any changes. I don’t edit as I work, so this is just pages of slop. names change, people appear and disappear, subplots fizzle out, etc. the characterization is also wonky because sometimes I only figure out what someone’s issue is halfway through.
draft 1 - the hardest stage. I have to wade through all my yucky nasty words and somehow make them readable. usually there’s a huge decrease in wordcount around here, because I’m slicing out subplots that didn’t go anywhere, and deleting entire chapters. by the end of this, everyone will have consistent names, and it will be roughly readable and coherent.
draft 2 - the fun stage! now it’s purely line edits. I read through everything to make sure it has a nice flow, and add in any extra descriptions that are necessary to avoid people talking in a void.
draft 3 - line edits again, but nitpickier. I read each page out loud, to see if I stumble on any sentences or transitions. usually I lose my voice a little because I’m just sitting on my exercise bike monologueing for multiple days straight.
and then, if I have enough time, I repeat the second and third stages endlessly until the book stops looking like language. but with the last couple books, I’ve set some sort of arbitrary deadline to stop this from happening.
I've a feeling the Draft 0 stage is the part that trips people up, because they aren't willing to let it be ugly just to get it "on paper".
when I tell people that my initial draft is always unreadable slop, they go "HAHA," because they think I'm being modest.
but genuinely, it's so embarrassing. and if I ever looked over my shoulder to be like "oh wait, that's the quality of my writing?? that's what I'm spending all my time on??" I would literally never finish.
here's an example of what the clean up looks like, between draft 0 and draft 1. you can see that some lines stay the same, but most things get rewritten to make them easier to parse.
this is is unedited:
and then this is edited:
barista just asked me "... and who are you?" instead of asking "can I get your name?"

so frustrating to be a skeptic with a sense of whimsy because like. I want there to be cryptids. I want there to be magic. I want there to be evidence of something we don't fully understand and can't explain. but then 99% of the "proof" out there for that stuff is like. the most obvious scam you've ever seen in your life.
Workers from Starbucks Workers United put their bodies on the line Nov. 19, shutting down Starbucks' distribution center in York, PA, the largest in the US.
Stand in solidarity with these working-class heroes, DON'T BUY STARBUCKS ANYWHERE UNTIL THEY WIN THEIR STRIKE!

The union is asking customers not to shop at Starbucks while the strike is ongoing. (Not all strikes include a boycott component, always important to check!)
You can also sign the pledge to this effect (numbers are helpful) or donate to the union strike fund.
This is from earlier this week FYI- so it's a ongoing, active strike.
