still thinking about jack harkness as an avatar of the end (magnus archives) i really went off w that
you protect your loved ones from death at all cost and cannot attain it yourself no matter how much you try and so you embody death as an eternal inversion of it and still must bear constant witness to it all around you forever. and you die again and again and again
still thinking about jack harkness as an avatar of the end (magnus archives) i really went off w that
20 of my favorite quotes from The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances shooting scripts for the 20th anniversary!
these are just quotes i found interesting or nostalgic or i just like - it's mostly about Jack Harkness, ngl
āJack turns. We see him for the first time - an iconic fist-look-at-a-hero shot, the reddening sky of Blitz London behind him, the searchlights, the laming buildings. Heās impossibly handsome, dashing - the jawline of Dan Dare, the smile of a bastard.Ā
āJack is sitting at the instrument of what appears to be some kind of space vehicle - it isnāt too dissimilar to the cockpit of a fighter plane; a mix of fighter pilot imagery and Star Wars⦠and a camper van. Does he live here?ā
āJack riches over, clicks a switch. Roseās first impression was dead right. Heās shockingly handsome.ā
āA little silence. Rose shifts, a little self-consciously - making all those awkward little flicks and tweaks of someone whoās aware they might not be looking their best but suddenly would like to. Sheās a little thrown but she gives her best shot a defianceā
Rose: āSo, who are you supposed to be then?ā Jack: āCurrently? Captain Jack harkness, 133 Squadron, Royal Air Force, American volunteerā
āA little reluctantly - but he is terribly handsome - Rose gives him her hands. Gently, Jack takes hold of them, starts to examine the cuts and bruises with what looks like a pencil torch.[...] He smiles at her, still holding her hands. And sheās terribly aware of this very handsome man, very close.ā
āHe clicks another control. An ice bucket with a bottle of champagne in it pops out of the wall, James Bond style (along with two glasses)ā
Rose: āDo you have the time? āWithout taking his eyes off her, Jack raises his zapper again, point it at the giant clock-face. The clock-face illuminates, bathing them both in its light. This is now impossibly romantic. And half past nine.
āJack, whirls, rolls, comes up on one knee, weapon levelled at the glass screen - itās classic James Bond - except - the weapon in his hand is a banana.
āJack laughs. Heās deciding he likes this guyā
The Doctor: āNine hundred years old, me. Been around. I think you can assume at some point Iāve⦠Danced.ā Rose: āYou??ā The Doctor: āProblem?ā Rose: (staring at him, intrigued, fascinated - is he a bloke after all?)
Rose: āWell. His nameās Jack, heās a captainā The Doctor: āHeās not really a captain, Rose!ā Rose: āYou know what= I think youāre experiencing captain envy.ā
Jack: āDidnāt look like talkingā Rose: āDidnāt sound like dancingā
āAnd off he goes, straightening his tie, smoothing back his hair. Rose stares after him, a little flummoxed by this turn of events. Something in her face is screaming āNo, no, not on that team!ā
āAlgy, old sport, itās meā
Rose: āDoctor, that bombā¦ā The Doctor: āTaken care of itā Rose āHow? The Doctor: āPsychologyā
āAnd he throws his arms. And the nanogenes stream from him, a golden storm of them - straight to the Gasmask Creatures. The creatures stagger, some of them fall - the Doctor, at the centre of the storm, arm flung wide, loving this, roaring with laughter, absolutely joyous-ā
āHe stands ready to face his doom like a man. Or at any rate, like a man with a drink. We start pulling back from him, as he looks out over the stars one final time. It's a pull-out that feels like the end of the show, like this is the last weāll see of him.
Jack: (looking numbly round the room) āBigger on the insideā¦ā The Doctor: āYouād better beā
The Doctor hits a switch on the console. The music changes - up tempo: Gleen Millerās āIn The Moodā. The Doctor: āI can dance!ā He grabs Rose, spins her perfectly and theyāre off round the console. And if you thought Jack could dance, this guy0s got nine hundred years on him. Rose: āActually, Doctor, I thought that Jack might like the danceā The Doctor: āIām sure he would, Rose, Iām absolutely certain⦠(He spins her, twirls her⦠Jack stands there, starting to smile, taking in this strange new world heās suddenly part of.) ⦠But who with?ā

"You wear suits and don't think I don't know why? You don't need a suit to make coffee!"
Jack, in 'Broken' implying that he knows Ianto only wears the suits because Jack is into them. And Ianto agrees.
Except... 'Blind Summit'' suggests that Ianto was indoctrinated and retconned repeatedly, and didn't understand where his fondness of suits came from. Tortured to the point he didn't understand why he was so good at making coffee. Because Torchwood One were molding him. Into the perfect, loyal, obedient operative.
And that just kills me.
We never knew the real Ianto. And neither did he.
Sometimes I hurt myself thinking about how when the hub blew up, really everything was destroyed. The picture of Tosh and Owen that Gwen kept on her desk, Jack's old RAF cap, his blue and white striped coffee mug, Ianto's coffee machine, Owen's lab coat, the 3D glasses on the lamp in Jack's office, really ALL of Jack's belongings that he'd gathered for over a hundred years, plus all of the archives and tons of alien artefacts. All the little bits that made it their home and all of their work, every reminder of the people they lost. Just gone.

Iām bisexual which means Iām a bad person
i do think it's so interesting that essentially ianto dies bc Jack tries to pull a the doctor style move (going up to confront the alien bad guys face to face and grandstand about how humanity won't bow down to them and basically play "are you willing to take us on" chicken without actually having a plan for what to do if the alien bad guys just go "fuck you" and hit the kill everyone button) and because he's a character within the show he doesn't understand that the reason this always works out for the doctor is. fundamentally. because doctor who is a lighthearted family show for the whole family. and bc that means for the doctor there will always either be some kind of deus ex machina to save the day (or at least the main characters) or the show just won't have the alien bad guys go fine have it your way and gas everyone in the building. And that actually there's nothing keeping him and his loved ones safe bc they are missing the one crucial thing the doctor has which is the protection of the 9pm watershed. anyway i think genre blindness is awesome as a trope so i'm having a lot of what can from a certain point of view be called fun here
