The concept that married people live longer is interesting. I'm sure there is some merit to the idea that if you're married there is someone there to nag you about going to the doctor, but I think much larger factors are having the finances of dual incomes and access to an immediate support person.

Here’s the thing. Married MEN live longer. The statistics for married women are less clear, perhaps because one of the things that causes premature death for married women is getting murdered by their husbands. It’s good to have someone around to drive you home after your surgery, to nag you to go to the doctor, to take you to the ER if you need it, and it’s usually wives that are taking on that care role for husbands, but it’s often sisters and mothers who are doing it for other women.

okay so i reblogged this but i am reblogging again to issue a correction on a thing i think is important: while obviously intimate partner homicide is obviously the most likely murder to experience as a woman, murder is just not a very likely way to die, and men are much more likely to be murdered, in general, than women both globally and in almost every individual country.

Watched a documentary about abuse and advice one guy said to give children was, "Tell them that if someone is hurting them, to tell someone - and don't just tell one person. Tell as many people as possible, and keep telling as many people as possible until the abuse stops." and i really liked that

This is really good advice and, in the UK at least, also applies to “adults at risk” as well. It’s what I did when I had problems with my social care provider that amounted to a safeguarding concern earlier this year.

Why are landlords allowed to lease homes they don't own? Why are renters expected to pay off the landlord's mortgage?

From a certain point of view, the landlord is doing the work of managing the business—the bank isn't in the business of picking out places to rent, or picking out renters, handling the day to day of management, etc. they're in the business of checking if someone is likely to default on a loan. In that sense it's not much different from why banks don't directly manage the businesses they lend to—you think a banker wants to run a grocery store or a nail salon?

There are some landlords who actually do provide a lot of service in property management. Snow shoveling, lawnmowing, same-day repairs, responding to notification emails ('your basket hooks fell out of the wall') with repair offers, etc.

One of the things I've grown to appreciate about Heartstopper is the way it represents realistic conflict within established relationships that isn't rooted in miscommunication or something similarly trivial. In season one it's the friction between Charlie's insecurity and the ramifications of Nick discovering himself and leaving his friend group. In season two, there's two: Darcy's refusal to be open with her vulnerabilities and the impact that has on Tara and their relationship; and the conflict between Elle moving forward and her desire for Tao not change and Tao's insecurity and feelings of inadequacy
