probably speaks to something unwell in the collective tumblr psyche that those absurdly bleak bad luck brian memes are the only survivors of, like, an entire genre of different advice animal image macros.

Every time I post an example of play involving a d66 table I get people in the notes being weird about, like, the concept of d66 tables, which is very irritating. However, I have to remind myself that having the temerity to look at a centuries-old piece of tabletop gaming technology that you've somehow never heard of before, deciding that you can improve upon it after a whole thirty seconds of thought, proposing an alternative that's both more awkward to carry out and less functional in use, and going away satisfied that you've solved a real problem purely because you find the existing solution's conventions of notation unaesthetic does in fact speak to having the proper mindset of a tabletop game designer.
@a-random-stingray replied:
What if i make it worse on purpose, does that also speak to the mindset of a tabletop game designer? The answer's yes, isn't it? I don't know why I felt the need to ask.
I once bumped into a game with an honest-to-goodness d1212 table (yes, notated exactly like that), though for the life of me I can't bring the title to mind at the moment.
For those taking issue with the "centuries old" part, here: have a US patent application for a tabletop American baseball simulator that uses a d66 lookup table for action resolution dated August of 1887. This almost certainly isn't the oldest, as the way it's used suggests familiarity to the target audience, but it's the oldest I can find off the jump.
#oh my god did gallagher just discover the term dank this is so exciting #does he know it's a weed thing?? there's no way right
Of course Peter Gallagher knows that "dank" is a weed thing. He also knows that "in heat" is a sex thing and that when aliens "probe" someone it's in the anus.
These are words, not things. Heathcliff is a comic about symbols.
You're never going to get a comic where an alien actually probes someone any more than you're going to get a comic where the Man-Eating Giant eats a man. You're just going to get a dozen comics where aliens like the word "probe".
Heathcliff wears the ham helmet because it's the helmet you wear when you eat a ham. You can tell it's that helmet because it says "ham" on it. The helmet's function is determined not by its form but by its label.
summer = beach = sand = desert = mummy and thus there is the Summer Mummy. Because of symbolic associations that do not otherwise cohere.
Robots don't wear clothes but the mere act of labeling them "nude" makes them nude. And once a painting is a nude painting there has to be a fig leaf because a "nude" without a "figleaf" is "indecent".
A "ham" is a ham even when it's a car. A yam can be a ham can be a car because "yam" sounds like "ham". Symbols have overtaken things.
Jimmy is Heathcliff's attempt to manipulate these symbols.
popularity = billboards, popularity = charity fundraising, popularity = influencers. But standing underneath the word "influencer" has failed to make Jimmy popular. Why is this?

wake into the dark
I don't disagree that telling stories is amongst the several functions of tabletop RPGs (though it's certainly not the sole function – or even the principal function – of many games), but I think a lot of analyses of story-in-RPGs trip over the GNS model's error of treating the activities of play as identical with the goals of play.
Like, if the goal of play is to produce a story, then the act of play must be identical with the act of telling a story, right? Except that's not how most stories we actually tell work. How most stories we actually tell work is a bunch of Weird Shit happens, then we make up an explanatory narrative to help us make sense of it.
In the overwhelming majority of conventional tabletop RPGs, the act of play is not identical with telling the story. The act of play is identical with experiencing the Weird Shit. The rules are a Rube Goldberg machine which outputs the materials of which stories are made, and if they're competently structured, all you need to do is turn the crank.
This, more than anything else, is why putting Rule Zero front and centre is going to give you problems in traditional games. If you start with the exact specific story you want to produce and ask how to get the rules to produce it, you're not merely setting yourself at odds with any particular rule; you're trying to run the machine backwards!
one time i was making potato soup and i needed broth for it but i was out of broth. but in my dog food cabinet there was a carton of chicken broth that i had bought for my dog. now the box did say HUMAN GRADE and the ingredients were just bog standard chicken broth. it did say something about joint health for dogs on there. but the ingredients were normal. i even compared the ingredients list to some normal person broth and they were the same. so i did put dog broth in that soup and it did taste completely normal. but i did use the dog broth.
AAA video game publisher voice: "Look. The goose layed a golden egg, and that's nice! Everyone loved that egg. But keeping the golden goose means paying for bird feed and I don't want to, so I killed the goose."
cons of being a NOOB gamer: always getting pwned in matchups, spend most of the match looking at the respawn screen
pros of being a NOOB gamer: everyone dresses you up like a girl and teases you

i think people are starting to confuse class analysis with bioessentialism. like... no not all men do this, but Men as a constructed social class do do this. that's still okay to say. that is regular material analysis of the world around us.
this is true, but it is not bioessentialist. both cis & trans men WILL see a mouse & eat it. this is because it is in their best interest to eat mice. they benefit from eating mice. this is essential to their class position, not their biological makeup.

Whenever they gave us one of those "read through ALL the instructions before you begin!" trick assignments in school where the steps lead you on an increasingly ridiculous goose chase until the final one tells you to just put your name on the paper and turn it in without doing anything else, I was always like, "Okay, but what's the point? Surely the REAL world won't be anything like this." And then I grew up and discovered that not only is the real world often exactly like that, some people won't even read the first line of the instructions even if they make perfect sense. And these people are called "co-workers"
I think that one of the most frustrating things about algospeak, after the "compliance in advance" self-censorship, is that there is no actual evidence-based justification for it. Everyone who uses it does so because they heard from a guy who heard from a guy that The Algorithm will bury their content if they don't use cutesy euphemisms.
it's weird how its a literal superstition about algorithms, and it's significantly changing English as it's used
