i always thought the "spoons" metaphor for disability limiting one's energy levels was clunky and awkward and doesn't very effectively communicate how that energy is limited and spent to those who do not experience chronic illness like that. why didn't we go for a fluid-based metaphor or something cool like "stamina" or "mana" where it's a reserve that you can visualize being gradually depleted???

still sort of surprised that no one bothered to analogize this with money. it's universal, it's tangible, it has real bearing in all our lives. somehow this didn't occur and i can't help but wonder how this was possible.

I feel a bit impatient with the way leftists criticize USAID when you point out that defunding it will have and has already had devastating consequences. "Yes, literally millions of people have died, but have you considered that USAID also was the funding vehicle for stupid and ineffectual schemes to overthrow the Cuban government." Like okay. Which of these things do you think I'm sad about losing? It's just like this absurd tendency to pick at some "ummm actually" in the face of a humanitarian catastrophe.

can we bring back the term "fair-weather friend" bc I feel like if fair-weather friends got called that more this whole argument about whether or not you should be there for your friends when it's inconvenient/at what point of personal inconvenience it's ok to bail on your friends would kinda fall apart bc like. we literally have a word for "friend who's only there when you don't need something from them" because the baseline expectation is that a friend should be there even when it sucks. like we used to make fun of people for bailing on their friends.
