Sims Fandom 101
the first mod you download is your mark of initiation
your first legacy challenge is your point of no return
as per our ancient (~15-year-old) traditions, only the path of total uninvolvement will be a path free of drama
for minimal drama, stick with old fart Sims 1 or Sims 2 players. We’ve had many years to carefully conceal our bullshit and make some truly bitchin’ mods
Sims 3 is a slightly more broken game, but the fans are more active and dynamic and get up to all kinds of weird shit
Sims 4 is… too… young? to have a cohesive fandom rn? but it’s relatively active and seems to be open and friendly enough

a large chunk of the community, esp. on tumblr, is a perpetual warzone that occasionally spills into simsecret
this is largely out of habit, seeing as simsecret WAS the perpetual warzone ca. 2008-2013 (their archive is like a chronicle of all the shit that’s gone down in the fandom since paysites vs. pirates began) and is still pretty much the most consistent place to go for a good ol’ gossip-fest
The Sims Resource has not been trustworthy since 2003
gifs add credence and gravitas to any comment or post
no matter what your background, you will certainly come across something that someone worked for hours to pose and shoot in-game, and it will give you nightmares
be prepared to accept criticism of your aesthetic
the less seriously you take the games, the more fun you’ll have
there are zillions of ways to contribute. like. so many. oh my god. You can write a story, create retextures and/or meshes, make fanart, make Sims, do challenges, make hacks, or even just tool around in your game and share a picture of something weird or pretty happening. You might not become a big-name Simmer overnight, but the community’s so big that you’re bound to find someone or something you like! :D
