& the problem with drawing a pascal who isn't visibly annoyed at the viewer and the setpieces and props around him is that imimata are not really visual things at all and the visualisation is the means through which pascal gets exploited, so the true non-exploited pascal can not be made visible
workin on effects and colour scheme still on this one, i want it to be fully painted at the end & these are just flats. pascal and his camera horses kind of all together in a void... what's better than this...

this may be too broad a question to answer meaningfully, but how do u approach picking A Theme for ur stories? do you already have an idea of what themes u want to explore before starting an outline, or does it emerge organically as u write the characters or world? how do u create characters to meaninfully explore that theme?
i just pick stuff that i like to read and think about i guess. i wrote out a few "here's how i arrived at this point-" type shit for some of my more developed stories but they've gotten to the point where the real answer to the question is the equivalent of a how to draw book that starts with a circle and then says "render until it looks like a face" with no intermediate directions. then i wrote the following wall of text and ended up forgetting most of what you asked well anyway enjoy
i guess the less developed stuff which is still in the process of being born can be more illustrative. like radio dragons. this was me trying to try out dragon rider fiction because it's an abiding favourite genre of mine and i think it comes pre-packaged with a lot of fascinating ethical dilemmas - is the dragon sapient? how are we going to deal with its subservient status? etc etc. at the end of the day the dragonrider genre is offering a fantasy of special, unconditional friendship and companionship. a mainstay is that the dragon is born already loving you.
originally I was going to try a kind of "here i am fixing these problems with a dragonrider society where dragons have the agency to pick and choose riders" but that felt kind of unfulfilling and toothless, and not super interesting either to just present a More Progressive Pern or whatever. it felt like doing a "what if disco elysium was about a witch in the alps searching for her neighbour's lost cat" on it. so instead i decided to play up the worst aspects of the genre as much as possible and flip it over to have a subservient human rider system and tell the story from the dragon's point of view, where the rider is the special friend chosen from birth who can never meaningfully say no to her
into this we can add elements of dragon rider genre as well as horse girl genre fiction which dig it deeper into a kind of dystopia for the humans. the themes that come out of this are fairly easy to pin down - subservience, servitude, being born into your role with no wiggle room, being shaped by forces outside your control to perform your role, being much younger than your bonded companion but given no accommodations due to this, and so on. as for the dragon - having your special companion be killed one day, and being forced to accept his redundant body-double as a replacement through your grief, being of a low social class and acutely aware of it while still having a strong blindspot for those under yourself, loving your rider, being strongly attached, being willing to do anything to protect him while still never viewing him as equal in personhood. the dragon's story is about grief and loss and struggling to accept the power you hold over someone else, your capacity for harm, even as an oppressed person yourself.
i also like elements of aviation and aerial dogfighting so they go in there as well. this type of set dressing comes just from the stuff i'm interested in personally and think would be fun to write about. but they also come with associated themes of militarism and warfare which get folded back into the overall structure of the airbases the dragons live in and their relationship with the planet and surrounding settlements (exploitative)
okayyy so to make the characters in this one it's easy enough. one dragon one rider. the dragon can't be the queen of the airbase because then she has dominance over everyone and not just within the specific dyadic relationship of dragon and rider - the point is that in her personal life, she is powerless and feels powerless. she's our young eragon who's just some lowly farmboy or whatever. her anger at her superiors and at the society that oppresses her is justified. but that's what gives her that big blindspot. she has to be nice and kind to her rider (fighting her grief as she is) so that she can scoff at the rider-abusive dragons and decry them as some bad apples and she would NEVER mistreat a rider. etc and so on. all of this reinforces the theming. the rider? well he's our special friend. he barely has a personality outside being a rider, he's not well developed (he is, but the narrative focus is not interested in his interiority), he's there to do rider things and act as a status symbol and always agree with the dragon and soothe her when she's upset and provide Words Of Wisdom and threaten people who threaten her. we don't care about what he thinks (we already know he loves us unconditionally and that's enough).
other characters kind of appear of their own accord just to work with what we already have - dragons who are cruel to their riders so that others can tut-tut about it, drill sergeant superiors, structures for the dragon to chafe against, riders who are trying to form a labour union, whatever
anyway you should end up sympathetic to the dragon and supportive of her cause and almost able to gloss over and excuse what's going on with the riders, because it's just fantasy at the end of the day and wouldn't it be cool to have a friend who's always there for you anyway

i made some bluesky posts about it but idk it bears repeating i find it really disheartening that nature/ecology/sustainability/specific animals is now just another theme for online artist to make landfill waste merch out of. because everything is a fandom and fandom is identity and stickers/badges/merch signify this identity (of loving nature). the green and brown crunchy stickers with native wildlife on them have the exact same environmental impact as any other
