There’s something comforting in the way Carlotta managed to escape the narrative after all. She’s everywhere in the story, her influence is almost continuous for 90 years. She managed things without Lasher no one else could. It’s small things. She’s the first Mayfair woman to get a college degree (Rowan is only the second, at least in the main branch!) She had her own apartment, she made her own money that wasn’t dirty. She drove Julien’s sons as well as the Talamasca agents out of New Orleans with the sheer power of being annoying and unpredictable. She was the only legal opposition to the Mayfair family there ever was. She severely limited Lasher’s influence, she managed to snatch Rowan from him and pair her up with the best possible mother for her. She’s one of my favorite characters and the truly beautiful thing about all of this is that we don’t know much more about her. Did she love her siblings? What life did she dream about when she first left the family? Who were her friends, did she ever have a lover? What was the core of her powers? Did she care about her nieces, were she ever proud of Rowan? Who was she, besides a huge nuisance? We can speculate, but the truth is that we will never know. Even when she talks about the past in the same chapter she chooses to die, she never lets us see anything objective or truly personal to her. She just goes out with a blast. All that’s left of her is a bit of Rowan’s guilt and the name she has given her, a few memories nobody to cares too much to remember. And that’s it!! She chose to give her life to a cause she must’ve believed in and no matter the outcome she chose to leave the story when she thought she was no longer needed. She won’t be a wise mentor to anyone, others can do that. She’s content to take all her truths into the grave with her.
