Appana is real and she can hurt you. Trust me.
that whole "make your characters want things" does so much work for you in a story, even if what your characters want is stupid and irrelevant, because how people go about pursuing their desires tells you about them as a person.
do they actually move toward what they desire? how far are they willing to go for it? do they pursue their desires directly or indirectly? do they acquire what they desire through force, trickery, or negotiation? do they tell themselves they aren't supposed to feel desire and suppress it? does the suppressed desire wither away and die, or does it mutate and grow even stronger? is the initially expressed desire actually an inadequate and poorly translated different desire that they lack language for? does the desire change once the language has been updated, or when new experiences outline the desire more clearly? do they want something else once they have better words for it, or once they know that they definitely don't want something they thought they wanted before?
how does the world accommodate those desires? what does the world present to your character and in what order to update and clarify their desires? how does your magic system or sci-fi device correspond to those desires and the pursuit of them?
there's so much good story meat on those bones; you just have to be brave and decisive enough to let characters want specific things instead of letting them float in the current of the plot.
and I loved the responses of “Well, my character is very passive and doesn’t know how to want things, the story is about their process of learning to do that exactly”, because that’s fine, that’s all well and good, but passive people still want things. passive human beings who have been so thoroughly neglected that the articulation of a single desire is beyond them want what their internal sphere of control tells them they are allowed to want. they desire constancy and a lack of conflict. they desire nostalgic artifacts that remind them of prior constancy and lack of conflict. the desire to float is an engineered desire that runs in conflict with the development of a happy healthy human being. Who engineered it? How do you begin to chip away at something like that? How do small, passive desires lead up to that?
she would do this

Things Doctor Who should be
a showcase for young/early career British acting talent and tv production talent in the UK
fiercely moral and borderline communist Saturday night family telly that's engaging for all ages
slightly parochial
12-14 episodes per series
cheap
Things Doctor Who should not be
open to any kind of input from any kind of USamerican
oops all stuntcasting
expensive
I think you’ve all been misinformed as to the actual IP situation of dr who in the 90s. Fans did not “own” dr who in the wilderness years and it’s a massive stretch to even say we controlled the direction of it. Like it’s an actively romanticized and ahistorical view of that time period to say it was a uniquely free time that we can never return to. Because it wasn’t. The major difference is not in how much control fans have as fan-authors (big finish has been actively hiring new fan-authors to write new original dr who stories this whole time) but in the specific content standards of Media In General these days. Like it’s true that we’re not getting Doctor Who: Sex And Violence like we did in 1991 but I wouldn’t even say that element of the VNAs is a major defining characteristic of what wilderness era who looked like.
Which is all to say that it’s going to be more similar to the old wilderness years than you think, but that’s because the old wilderness years were a lot worse than you remember
also: it is an objectively true fact that there are more avenues for fans to contribute to licensed dr who media now than there ever have been in the show’s history, regardless of whether the current moment becomes a “second wilderness years” or not. Do not let nostalgia for a time I Know many of you were not around for fool you—the pool of authors for the VNAs and EDAs were tiny compared to the amount of new writers big finish alone is bringing in. It wasn’t populist, it wasn’t The Fans taking Control, it was a few specific fans (overwhelmingly white and male fans with a very narrow view of what doctor who is or should be) taking direction from editors who ultimately reported to the BBC. It may not seem like it but we have been in a great time for fan labor being recognized and compensated by the bbc for a while.
You ever think about many peices of media have zero women and thats just perfectly normal but if a peice of media has an all female cast people get... like that? Women should be allowed to kill over this btw
same but it's black people
That's right

The hiatus between Gallifrey War Room 2 and 3 is now officially longer than the televised RTD2 era
Welcome to the free my girl tourney!
this is a tournament where we defend all our favorite characters who are also victims of fandom misogyny. this post contains a link to the submission form, but before that, here are some rules:
no real people (obviously there are lots of real life women who are victims of fandom misogyny, but i feel like having those women compete in a poll against each other and also against fictional characters would be kind of disrespectful to the actual real life shit they were put through)
no men!!!! idc if he's like a woman to you, this tournament isn't for him!!!!
obviously, misogyny does not have to be the only factor here, it just has to be one of the factors. if racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, etc. are also part of the problem, do not hesitate to bring that up in your submission! it's highly relevant! the last thing i want is a tournament consisting of only cis straight white women, especially because so many of the hated/mistreated women of fandom are also marginalized in other ways that the fandom hates them for.
idk if this is a rule exactly, but just to clarify, this tournament is about which one of these characters is your favorite. it is emphatically not about trying to quantify which character is the biggest victim of fandom misogyny. that seems like an utterly exhausting and pointless thing to argue about, please don't subject me to that. i just want to see people defend their favorite overly maligned or mistreated girlies in my notes, i cannot stress this enough
characters don't have to be overtly hated to be victims of fandom misogyny. they can also be perpetually ignored in favor of men, or constantly characterized as the wise mom friend who the fandom has apparently decided has no desires or goals or needs besides being a sounding board for their favorite white boy, etc.
there's no time limit on this thing. even if the hatred/fandom mistreatment has died down and the character in question has been re-examined since, if there was ever a period in which they were subjected to fandom misogyny en masse, they count.
that said, don't choose characters who are generally universally beloved and always have been but you saw one person shit on them one time in a misogynistic way and got annoyed. i hate when that happens too, but it's does have to be a trend, not just one annoying guy, even if the guy in question is really annoying.
submit as many characters as you like!
you can submit a character here:
i would appreciate it if you could reblog this version of the post instead of the one i made on this blog. it'll probably help avoid confusion.
