VERY IMPORTANT a dam in the Netherlands, the weerdsluis lock, is directly on a migratory path for spawning fish. They have a worker stationed there to open the door for the fish, but they can take a while to open it. So to keep the fish from getting preyed on by birds they installed a doorbell. Only, the fish don't have hands to ring the doorbell. If you go to their website, they have a LIVE CAMERA AND A DOORBELL that YOU RING FOR THE FISH when they're waiting, and then the dam worker opens the door for them! I can't express how obsessed I am with this. look at this shit. oh my god.
Please check on the fish doorbell once in a while :)
I just looked, and there are 170 other people on there, also checking to see if there are fish waiting.
Please remember, if ever you are tempted to make a sweeping statement about human nature, that on this night in March, 2024, while war rages, there are 171 of us looking to see if a fish needs us to ring a doorbell.
Plenty else is going on, but also that.
(PS, the site says that the busiest times for fish are sunrise and sunset, which for now are at about 6:30, AM and PM, local time. Local time in Utrecht is 1 hour ahead of GMT, 5 hours ahead of EST, if that helps. I'm going to try to remember to check back again around 2 AM my time, when it will be morning for the fish!)
I love asking friends, without context, "what are you really into this week?" I'll go first. this week I'm really into mouthwash and sudoku. Last week I was into peaches.
we used to be a society on here!! reblog, don't like! I want to hear what you're into!!! I'm literally looking into the nyt game Pips!!!
This week I am into origami elephants because a friend said she liked elephants
I sent a letter today - something I havenβt done for years
Itβs full of plastic bread clips
Itβs for Science
At the risk of loosing some mystery, I think I should add some context:
Thereβs this website-I mean, scientific organization called the Holotypic Occlupanid Reasurch Group.
They are a group of abiologists who study and classify Bread clips.
I found a species that has not yet been described:
Yay for citizen science π
wtf?
Update:
Apparently HORG is widely appreciated by pediatricians since knowing exactly what kind of Occlupanid a child may have swallowed makes removing it safely much easier
IIRC this is actually part of the reason HORG was started. A man swallowed a breadclip and the clip closed around part of his tissue linings (in his intestines I think?). The specific shape and flexibility of the clip were significant determining factors in the removal process, as some bread clips have spikes and prongs that would have made extraction more complicated. They started the taxonomy so they could work out extraction techniques for each type.
are you fucking kidding me occlu like oculus or close and panid like bread. its a fancy word for breadcloser
happy very specific archive thursday, everyone
the work printer cries out, "no stop, that's too much! youre gonna make me jam!" as i load a full ream into her tray, but it's too late. "see, you can take it. you're doing such a good job for me." i coo into her feeding tray as i begin printing the morning reports. her warning lights turn red as she moans in i assume ecstacy

I still think that my favorite urban legend/folklore fact is that there are certain areas in New Orleans where you cannot get a taxi late at night not because it isnβt safe, but because taxi companies have had recurring problems of picking up ghosts in those areas who are not aware that they are dead and disappearing from the cab before reaching the destination and therefore stiffing the driver on the fare causing a loss for the company.
An occupational hazard of cab driving I had not previously considered
I love that the nola problem here is not βghosts in my taxi cab,β but βghosts are FUCKING BROKE DEAD BASTARDS & I GOT BILLSβ
Horror is when ghosts get into cabs and scare drivers Magical realism is when cab companies have to develop policies to prevent ghastly fare-theft
In a book about the tsunami in Japan in 2011, the writer talked about how there was a huge increase in reports of ghostly activity. Apparently in Japan treating ghosts rudely is basically considered the stupidest thing you could possibly do. For months after the tsunami, taxi drivers would pick up a passenger only to have them give an address in one of the devastated areas. The cab driver often looked up halfway to the destination to find their fare had disappeared. Not wanting to be impolite to the person (even if they were dead) theyβd drive to the address, open the door to let them out, then drive away.
This account has been running on autopilot for a while now because of the posts I've scheduled into the future. Still, it's quite nice to check in and see what some people have been doing here.
I want to brag about my uni life. I found a friend to talk about philosophy with and we share some ideas from time to time, we study together and recently we formed a book club with some other people I know from high school. We'll have our first meeting in two weeks and we'll discuss colorless Tsukuru Tazaki by Haruki Murakami.
I hope everyone's doing well here, considering it's almost summer and the outside feels a bit more alive. I hope you're feeling somewhat alive, too.

Still one of my favorite things I've created
There seems to be a lot of confusion about this. The working title of the comic strip was "Mr. Krabs gets sent to the abyss and faces the divine light of God above" I hope this helps
