I dislike the way that people dance around the oppression of women when it comes to conversations about history. Lots of people acknowledge that women were seen and treated as property, but the horror of that experience is rarely conveyed. When teaching about women's rolls in ancient cultures there is always that comment about women not being able to own property, that they were property themselves, and were expected to be submissive to men. But what does this actually look like?
It looks like rape. Like mothers being seperated from daughters. It looks like being forced to cohabit with and serve an owner who will force himself on you and breed you like stock. It is the sadness of miscarriage and the realisation that your body won't hold up. It's mutilation and violence. It's watching the deaths of your friends knowing that none of them lived a truly happy life. It's watching your daughter grow up knowing that she will be sold into servitude and raped until she dies, the same fate you face. In some cases you didn't even have a name.
Women's oppression is the oldest form of oppression, and yet we are still so strongly gripped by patriarchy that there is a refusal to acknowledge what that actually means. We have barely even started earning our rights in the west, and our sisters still face the terror of what I have described above. Women are always one step away from losing everything, and yet the movement meant to fight for women's liberation is being overun by men and misogynistic women. It's easier for them to uphold the status quo than challenge it.
Women need to learn their history, the grim and horrifying reality of it. The truth of our existence under patriarchy. If we don't seek out this truth, then history is doomed to repeat.
notice anything? notice anything missing? any commonality amongst all of these women that is being deflected from and obfuscated by unclear vague all-inclusive language?
lesbian. lesbian is the word for female homosexuals. not gay, not queer, lesbian. lesbian. lesbian. ellen did not come out as gay, she came out as a lesbian, melissa etheridge is not a queer rock icon, she is a lesbian rock icon, the wnba contains no gay players, it contains only lesbian and bisexual players, tegan and sara did not grow up gay, they grew up as lesbians, ellen degeneres did not have a queer talk show, she was a lesbian with a talk show. please please please just say lesbian it isnβt a dirty word. soon enough, the only exposure people will have to the word lesbian will be through bleached blonde straight girls with fake boobs and long french tip nails fondling each other on pornhub for male pleasure. when we talk about actual lesbians it is so important to use clear language and say LESBIAN!!!!!!!
btw these are just a few quick examples I found in about 2 minutes, but there are literally thousands of examples on the internet of people using every term under the sun besides lesbian and acting like lesbian is some dirty unspeakable word
Queer theory is so funny to me as African because I'll see all these people in the western countries trying to assign meanings to clothes and to pronouns and to parts of their personalities, they'll believe that changing their clothes or their pronouns or their language or their behavior will exempt them from misogyny. And while I understand that it is a condition of the System to keep us all separated, I can't help but bristle at the racism behind this all.
If any of these liberals had bothered to read, they would know that there exists many many communities indigenous to Africa whose languages don't have gendered pronouns, where clothing rules are different. Where men and women dressed the same, where the rules of nudity are different. Where men are effeminate. And in most, if not all of these communities, misogyny will still be rampant.
My community used to allow female to female marriages but all those women were still circumcised. My language does not have "she" or "he" but that did not save any of us from misogyny. My friend's community doesn't even have gendered slurs and she still had to run away when she was 11 so that she wouldn't be circumcised. There is no solution other than uprooting the whole system. Creating more categories does nothing.

im not moved by the "i know vegans are right i just like the taste" crowd. to know you participate in cruelty and continue just because of something so frivolous is disturbing
Actually I think forcing an animal to be pregnant every year of their life and subsequently slaughtered just to get their milk is cruelty and not good for them. I actually think that sounds like torture.
Veganism is one of the only forms of political activism that people treat as if you're being a proselytizing, militant, asshole if you actually stand by your principles and speak up for and about animal rights, cruelty, and exploitation (and sometimes if you even just casually mention you're vegan) because they don't want to have to think about what they're participating in. People want to disparage veganism and vegans for being against meat-eating as if the mass cruelty of the animal agriculture industry isn't against a vegan's ethics and their meat just falls from the sky. You don't want to think about the cruelty needed to treat animals as products but instead want to encourage the continued funding of the cruelty while spreading misinformation, disinformation, and outright hostility towards vegans because we care about animals as other sentient beings and followed that to the conclusion that they shouldn't be slaughtered, experimented on, or used for entertainment.
People expect you to treat veganism like it's just a personal diet plan so how dare you hold the stance individual actions matter and correct their misinformation.
Veganism was my first entry point into realising just how cruel the female is treated.
Cows are artificially inseminated in a humiliating ritual by a male of another species (Men). This is done as soon as she reaches sexual maturity at the age of 16 to 18 months. She is forced to be pregnant for 9 months and then go through the painful process of birthing a calf that will be taken away immedietely, who will soon experience the same fate of her mother if she is female. The cow then is artificially inseminated again soon after the birth of her first calf, and the cycle repeats until she grows too weak and is killed.
Hens are bred to produce more eggs than they can manage, often resulting in a shorter than average lifespan, respiration problems, and difficulty keeping herself upright.
The female reproduction system is exploited in all forms of species. The human females know this, and they do not care. They will continue to allow their bodies to be used, they will go through the excruciating pain of birthing just so their oppressors are pleased, their bodies will forever be mutilated and stretched beyond its limits, they will experience shorter life spans as their husband and spawn siphon the energy out of her. She does not care. She will do it again. She will cook the eggs of the Hen, she will use the milk of the Cow for her children to grow and do the same. A cycle that will never unbreak.
Iβve never hated someone so much that I want to inflict sexual violence on them. Itβs a bit terrifying how a substantial part of the population doesnβt feel the same . I wonβt pretend to be some saint with no disturbing or vengeful thoughts on those I despise but it still baffles me just how common it is for males to get turned on by the prospect of SA explicitly being used as a weapon .

i think misogyny starts to feel like a lot more crazy of an opression when u process that we are half of the entire world population. half of all humans. and half of all humans have been systemically opressed by the other half in large swatches of the world for going on hundreds and thousands. h a l f. and we treat sexism like its somehow much less of an opression than other ones
Two things this website hates and thatβs women and gay people who are gay in the βI have sex with other gay peopleβ way and not some sort of thinly defined yearning and homophobic joke based system largely applied to brothers and male coworkers in early 2000s television shows. Three things this website hates actually sorry silly me but this website does hate black people.
diluting and twisting medical language around female health is like a psyop designed to further confuse the vast majority of women who may not get that *afab people* *people with uteruses* *non-men* *folks who menstruate* is describing them specifically, not some nebulous group of everybody and anybody
when i was visiting subreddits about endometriosis or pcos, there was a lot of pressure on the inclusivity of language
why isn't it a thing in literally any other places? why aren't labour unions writing about workers in this way? working and unemployed folks, functional and momentarily stagnant bodies?
why are we specifically pressured to change, include everyone who feels like it and walk on nomenclature shells so we don't hurt anyone's feelings in the process of describing our own - often crippling and debilitating - pain?
we don't even know why exactly endometriosis happens. we don't know shit about it, compared to literally anything connected to male anatomy. their pain is an emergency, ours is a status quo
my condition isn't discriminating anybody, it isn't a part of affirming and validating fantasy. it's a reality - one that i actually have to live with
A couple more ways to piss me off:
"people are evil" when talking about male violence
"all the people affected" when it's 99.9% women affected
"men hate femininity, femininity makes you vulnerable" when talking about misogyny, sex based oppression
Zimbabwe Akashinga Rangers, all-women anti-poaching unit
These women are amazing.
Many of them are vegan. Many have survived domestic abuse and sexual assault. For many of them, this is their first-ever paid job after a life of domestic servitude in marriage. They're the only armed female anti-poaching group currently active. They've arrested hundreds of poachers just since 2017.

It's nuts how common it is to not allow children to be angry, even (especially) in households where adults are angry all the time. As a child I knew my own anger was unacceptable--not just expressing it outwardly but feeling it at all. So now as an adult my immediate reaction to my own anger is often to feel guilt instead of like. Noticing when someone is being rude or unfair or my boundaries are being violated or whatever. fucked up.
The damage witchhunting by calling feminists "terfs" is actually diabolical like the utter refusal to use the words sexism and misogyny are entirely down to this reason. The amount of times I have seen a post describing to a literally definition sex based oppression and everyone is using this new language as a way to avoid using the "evil terf word of misogyny" its fucking insane not to mention how easy this makes it for sexism and misogyny to run rampant.
If everyone's to afraid to call a fox a fox it makes it a lot harder for the chickens to stay safer from foxes.
