I don't know why people get so defensive and morally superior when you point out the nature of human relationships is transactional. I'm not denying or diminishing your "love", I'm just pointing something out.

reading through those well intentioned posts about "people on the internet need to be nicer and less judgy" etc until I reach the last sentence which is always something like "don't people have EMPATHY. they should practice and learn EMPATHY" at which time I hit an incredibly loud incorrect buzzer

I don't understand people or humans. Bioessential morality, virtuous innate empathy/sympathy/compassion/emotion, "it's human to ____"/"only humans ____" statements, holier than thou towards neurodivergents, persodivergents, etc. Equating certain stigmatised disorders with abuse and immorality. I don't understand.

It’s a moot point.  In order to survive as a person who doesn’t feel empathy or remorse, society dictates that you must pretend to feel those emotions or face dire consequences.  So it doesn’t matter if it’s manipulative or not, because it’s a vital survival skill.  Lies and deception for the sake of self-preservation are always fair game, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
