i absolutely adore cutiepie babydoll molina from the movie but she is like fundamentally a different character from molina in the book with the traits in common basically being like. transfeminine people who are in the same general plot premise lol. like the story of the movie is wide eyed ingenue trans girl is radicalized by falling in love w a radical in prison. and its good and i like it. the story of the novel if i had to sum it up in a sentence is, middle aged closeted trans woman experiences gender euphoria by doing femme fatale shit to fuck over a revolutionary movement lmao. and just because of my personal dramatic tastes that is in a lot of ways more interesting and compelling to me. also i did get fully distracted at one point being like "okay the eponymous spider woman is not molina as it clearly is in the novel so what new meaning are they trying to graft onto that symbol here...." lol

like the novel expresses a lot of bitterness and self hatred that is i think authentic to the experience of being genderqueer in the 1970s and this is a 2020s movie and its trying to be more hopeful and affirming. which is i guess appropriate and admirable

BUT this movie succeeds where the 86 version did not by understanding this is story about erotic gender affirmation and how romantic that is to experience
