Unpopular opinion: straight people using “partner” to refer to their SO actually helps normalize the term so that lgbt folx can use it without automatically outing themselves to strangers. It also helps other straight ppl get comfortable with the fact that strangers aren’t entitled to information about other people’s gender or sexuality.

As a nonbinary bisexual™ I would like to concur. Normalizing neutral terms makes them actually neutral. While I use they&&them to refer to anyone whose gender I don’t know, people also frequently read that as an implication they are nonbinary inherently. When we say “partner” now, people assume their gender is either the same as ours or that they’re trans. If those terms instead became normal to use, they would have a neutral social connotation, and thus would fulfill their purpose more effectively. Not a hard concept to grasp.

Also partner just refers to someone who you live with and share finances with but aren’t married to like the term has always existed and the reason why it’s associated with gay people is because when gays couldn’t get married they had to use partner to signify the status of their non-marital relationship
