My sister took more photos of my dress. I am very happy with how this turned out :)))))

but then we met more avatars throughout the show, like agnes montague who was literally born an avatar and her propensity to the desolation leaves her hurting anyone she gets close too(that one guy she kissed for example). And then our main character, jonathan sims, starts turning into an avatar and now he is questioning his humanity and morality. He read the statements so he probably had the first reaction as we as the audience(or just me ig) had.

Now back to jane. With her statement we know what her thoughts were before she turned into what we see and we get a glimpse of her personhood. and with jon feeding off of others' fear, What does that say about jane? she wasnt always like this and what if she has to terrorize people to stay alive like jon? what is so different between her and jon that she is evil and not human, and he is just someone in a bad situation that needs to do what he needs to to survive(and human).

The intersection between choice and identity, free will and personhood is the waters that TMA thrives in. And it loves to make you believe something about a character and halfway through the series turn that entire thing on its head and make you reconsider that person all over again. (Jon's personality in season 1 being a complete falsehood is just the start of the heel turns it makes you take about people).

With Jane and with Jon, we see people who didn't like what they were becoming, but being drawn to those toxic and dangerous things because they needed it. With Jane, because she craved to be truly loved. With Jon, because his body was demanding new needs from him and because he felt he had to stay alive to keep his friends safe.

The philosophical ideas at play here, particularly Jon's "is willpower just safety?" hit me particularly hard because it reflects so much how C-PTSD operates (in an environment of emotional neglect). How you make "choices" that retain your immediate emotional safety, even while you compromise your overall comfort and selfhood.

You can "choose" to be something you don't want to be, because sometimes there's safety in letting the forces around you guide your hand, instead of the known death of stepping outside of those boundaries.

Jonny also wrote this series as a commentary on capitalism and how complicity operates in a system that is too large for us to truly grapple with on an individual level. We are all guilty of contributing to this evil system, by merely living in it.
