âBĂ BrĂłdĂşilâ - Be Proudđłď¸âđ
Stolen from @glowingwithgaeilge on Instagram!đˇ
Freshman year of college I was in a philosophy class and I was giving some sort of group presentation. The prof asked my group âwhat do you think is your purpose in life?â And none of them really had an answer while I just said âto make the world a better place for those who come after usâ because in my mind thatâs just the obvious answer. The prof looked kind of taken aback that I just had an answer on the ready and was like âWhy? Whatâs your motivation?â
In that moment I realized I was in front of a lecture hall of privileged students. I was surrounded by people who didnât know poverty or desperation like I had. I clawed my way here on scholarships while they were legacy kids or trust fund babies. In that moment it clicked in my head that thereâs this level of empathy that you can only gain when you have absolutely nothing to lose. A level of empathy that only the impoverished have. A level of empathy that screams out that you have to fight to make things better even if it doesnât benefit you. Itâs a concept that you can only really grasp when you have nothing to lose and the kids before me hadnât known that pain. They hadnât developed that kind of empathy.
My only answer that I could give the prof was âWhy wouldnât I?â
A level of empathy that screams out that you have to fight to make things better even if it doesnât benefit you.
all the angry rich people in the notes:
also to all the people who are arguing that class privilege has nothing to do with empathy, studies show that richer people have less empathy
i know u dont like to listen to us commoners but⌠lmao
oh this one of them good posts where the basic message is âtreat people betterâ and this causes the most controversy
One of the first standalone events I ever planned was a donor drive for a young child. One of the reporters from the paper I worked at had written a story about him & his family and after reading it I was both moved and furious. The parents were both working full-time and half/pick-up work on top of raising one healthy son and one younger son who had cancer. I didnât have any money, I had already been on the registry myself for years at that point (so obviously I wasnât a match or Iâd have been called) but I did have something: time.
So I gathered up info, started making some calls and before I knew it had everything needed from a venue to phlebotomists to decorations, a mini flier stuffed in with the payroll cheque of the largest employees in the area, radio/paper ads, and made a sandwich board I wore around the Farmerâs Market in the few weeks before the drive. I would get asked left and right if I was related to the kid, if he was my student or neighbor or family friends or if I was being paid and the #1 response to my âNope, heâs just a local kid who needs a transplant, Iâm doing it because I can and his family should be spending all the time they can with him, so with their permission I started this drive to help.â?
âSo if you donât know this kid at all and arenât getting money why are you doing all of this?â
Because I can. Because I donât need to know someone to help them. Because it infuriates me that for them to try and save their kid, they miss out of that very life they want to save. Because their situation isnât one I have personal experience with doesnât invalidate me from being able to empathize and care and offer what I can. It isnât much, but itâs what I can do and what I feel like I should do.
After the drive, I was crying in my car absolutely beyond frustration at the turnout. With all the media, payroll fliers, posters, etc. Iâd figured weâd get 500+. We got 86. The regional manager of the saw me and congratulated me on a successful drive and I was like âThanks for saying that even though we both know it wasnât.â Before I said anything else she said âSTOP. We just had a booth at a large 3 day event and didnât break 25 for the entire weekend. By any measure, this was a successful event.â
I decided on the spot to keep running drives and volunteering and beating the drum. I ran larger events with more groups participating, did small events, got everyone I knew to sign up and kept on moving. That young boy did find a match through a different drive elsewhere, thank everything, and more encouraging is that several of the drives I coordinated found donor matches with at least 3 successful transplants. I didnât know any of those patients either, but neither did the donors and they still signed up because of the chance theyâd be a match for someone in the world.
A lot of us are motivated to mitigate the suffering of others, not to increase the comfort of ourselves. I may not be able to buy groceries with the shaky smiles of gratitude or knee-level hugs, but those things feed your very core of your being and fill your heart to bursting.
Iâm an atheist, yet the Prayer of St Francis evoked such a strong feeling in me that Iâve tweaked it and have it as a future tattoo design.
I will be an instrument of peace
Where there is hatred, I will bring love;
Where there is injury, justice;
Where there is illness, healing;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.
As I walk this path, I will strive all my days
Not so much seek to be consoled as to console
To be understood, as to understand
To be loved, as to give love
For it is in giving that we receive
It is in sharing that we are are made One,
And it is in Love that we are made eternal.
I donât understand how so many people require so much more reason or reward to simply be kind and care about each other. Be compassionate, care about others more than you do about yourself, and offer help where you can.
Reblogging again to note that the study cited in the link is out of the Berkeley psych department as one of the projectsin their ongoing study on what makes people happy, which they have found to be making other people happy.

Oh hi ski season!! #redlodgemontana #skitrip #skibumlife #skimontana #snowboarding (at Red Lodge Mountain) https://www.instagram.com/p/B5NvlZOlCjU/?igshid=7lzcx835w9bt
christmas hymns, rated.
carol of the bells: ââᾣᾣᾧá´á´ĘĘĘáľáľĘłĘłĘ¸christmasââᾣᾣᾧá´á´ĘĘĘáľáľĘłĘłĘ¸christmas. creepy as shit and loving every moment of it. perfect for holiday-themed vampire lurking outside the gothic cathedral of your choice. just enough of a frantic tone to keep you on your toes. and sung with a child choir? youâve knocked it outta the park, bud. 10/10.
hark, the herald angels sing!: not the best. a bit dry. can lose you if youâre not paying attention. points for being easy for kiddies to sing at church though! we froth accessibility. 5/10.
good king wencelas: thin đ and đ crisp đ and đ even đ 6/10.
o come, all ye faithful/adeste fideles: sex symbol. inventor of the crescendo. the absolute vibes this thing has are haunting, especially under and good church roof. smack an over confident leading tenor in the mix and you have a winner. 10/10.
ding dong! merrily on high: makes me feel like iâm a young peasant girl running through the streets of a quaint european village in the wintertime with no cares save what father christmas shall deliver to my stocking this eve. would definitely ââá´źooá´źá´źá´źáľáľáľáľáľá´źá´źâââââoooââʰáľË˘áľâżâżáľ ᜌ⿠áľËŁáśáľËĄË˘áśŚË˘ again. 9/10.
o holy night: the shift from relatively normal sounding verses to đđđđ đđ đđđđ đđđđđ, đđ đđđđ đđđ đđđđđ đđđđđđ will never fail to shatter me like glass. 11/10
away in a manger: like hark, the herald angels sing! this one is pretty simple. easy for the whole family to sing which makes it an ideal church song! but lacks energy. a good wind down, but thatâs about it. 5/10.
we three kings of orient: i always thought the âthree kingsâ were sorta stupid and unnecessary. like, the shepherds i understand, but three randos from âthe eastâ? seems shoehorned in honestly. kinda feels like whichever apostle (matthew?) wrote that in somehow knew that, years in the future, groups of unenthusiastic children were gonna have to be assigned roles in nativity plays and added three more possible characters just to stop half the kids from having to play sheep and grass so they could be âincludedâ. cheers matt. song is okay i guess. 6/10.
once in royal davidâs city: pretty inconsequential hymn, but the Choir of Kingâs College Cambridge do an arrangement that makes me believe in God for approx. four and a half minutes every time I listen to it. 8.5/10, bonus points for the kingâs col. boys. ur doing so good lads. big love.
the first noĂŤl: a true banger and a great song to sing in church because thereâs always some lady in the front pews who tries really hard to do all those killer soprano parts by herself. absolutely magical when sung right and absolutely magical when sung wrong. 10/10.
do i saw three ships you coward
i saw three ships: should only acceptable when it contains knockout levels tin-whistlery, which is rarely, but itâs fine without it i guess. songs that are formatted like conversations or exchanges are automatically a hit because they allow churches to temporarily segregate their congregations like back in the good old days, which they just love. genuine tune tho. 7/10 would dance around a maypole to.
christmas hymns (and carols), rated. pt 2.
o come o come, emmanuel: managed to turn âisraelâ into a 5+ syllable word which is a feat unto itself. the drama factor really fucking elevates it. heavy organ rattles me bones like nothing else. 7/10.Â
silent night: tender and mild really sums this shit up. iâd rather the night be silent than listen to this, if thatâs an option. has negative vibes, negative energy, and i donât know what the back half of this song sounds like because i fall asleep 20 seconds into it without fail. mild isnât how i like my holy infants, chicken wings, OR hymns. 0/10.
in the bleak midwinter: has ample drama, but the abundance of latin is classist. really captures the spirit of awful english winters. 6/10.
update: the original poetry anthology this appeared in belonged to a woman, was called Goblin Market, and had some soft af ladies embracing in bed on the front cover so iâm retroactively bringing this up to a 9/10.
little donkey: forgot this existed until it was requested and i was overcome with such a wave of nostalgia i could not write for some time. tender and mild but in a nice, soft way that makes me ache for childhood. 10/10.Â
while shepherds watched their flocks by night: reads a little bit like the bethlehem local newsletter but that just means itâs an absolute classic church-y christmas song. weâve done it! weâve broken emotionless christian holiday content down to itâs bare essentials! 4/10.
the cat carol: Every Christmas my parents come alive, inviting droves of loved ones over to their house and hosting many parties throughout the holiday season. Newcomers will enter our abode during this time and my father will then, without fail, ask them if they have ever heard the cat carol. The answer is, invariably, âNo, I havenâtâ, which the man who raised me takes as an unspoken invitation to subject said houseguests to what might very well be the most upsetting piece of music ever crafted for human consumption. 1/10. Â
snoopyâs christmas: not a hymn, barely a carol, but should be both. â/10.
Oh theyâre going to need salvation.
Not just making it illegal, but making being gay punishable with death.
This is one of the many reasons why I walk by every single red bucket in the run-up to Christmas. Theyâre not getting my money, I donât care how nice the people ringing bells are.
Ever since the time they threatened to close all their soup kitchens in NYC if a law that did something as simple as allow companies to extend spousal benefits to their employeeâs same-sex domestic partners I have refused to buy from them or donate to them.Â
Itâs that time of year again! In case people donât know⌠the Salvation Army is shitty peoples.
Also, the married women are not paid (and therefore canât qualify for assistance if they should ever divorce, etc). And worth âof courseâ less than a man.
â In the Armyâs case, the agreement for compensation is that the officer allowance be paid jointly to the husbandâthe check is written in his name. Officially, the wife is a âworker without expectation of remuneration,â and her husband receives 40 percent more of an allowance as a married man than he would as a single man. â

hey since that season is coming up again!
To my American followers. Donât support Salvation Army. Not only are they homophobic as shit, but Iâve also heard that they abuse a lot f homeless people. They only care about money, please donât donate to them and give your money to charities that actually help people
Never donât reblog.
To be clear: this is specific to America. It is not necessarily going to be true for all countries. Please donât boycott your own salvos without proper investigation: in many countries they do good work.
My brother saved this document and everytime he gets angry at our neighbours for being loud he prints it to their wireless printer and you can hear the wife shout âWhy the fuck would you print this AGAIN?!â to her son.
