you can be oppressed in some ways and privileged in others. you can be oppressed in some ways and privileged in others!!!! being privileged in some ways doesn't negate your struggles with oppression!!!! no one is saying that if you're privileged in one way you automatically do not struggle with any other types of oppression!!!! it isn't mutually exclusive! this is what intersectionality is ABOUT! an able-bodied lesbian suffers from homophobia but receives able-bodied privilege! a cis Black woman suffers from both racism and misogyny (misogynoir), but experiences cis privilege! a trans man suffers from transphobia, but experiences male privilege! a white disabled man suffers from ableism, but experiences both white and male privilege! ITS COMPLICATED! OPPRESSION IS MANY-FACETED! THAT'S THE POINT! these things DO NOT CANCEL EACH OTHER OUT! i'm so so sick to death of the way people freak the fuck out when you tell them they experience a type of privilege and start claiming you're telling them they aren't oppressed! THAT'S NOT HOW THIS WORKS!
privilege doesn't make you evil. how you use it is what matters. if you find that you hold privilege in some way, then you can use that privilege to help show up for & uplift those who don't. it's literally that easy. i know we're all exhausted and hurt. i know everyone's going through it and lashing out. i understand. but you can't let that make you a bad ally to those most vulnerable. covering your ears and pretending you don't hold any privilege at all only makes you more likely to accidentally hurt someone with it. recognizing you have it and putting effort into using it helpfully is what will make you someone people can trust & rely on. okay?
