this took SUCH a huge deal of unlearning because, like so many of you, i came out of a home where being quietly in trouble WAS the default state, and i DID grow up not just with the assumption but borderline religious conviction that Everyone Is Mad At Me, I Am Bad, I Must Exist In A Constant State of Attempting to Pacify The Natural Rage I Inspire In Everyone. and no it actually turns out that my family are the freaks . and yours are too

except for the follow up where i explicitly state “people WILL do this, and you should have better friends than that, because doing this is not normal or healthy for either party”

Yeah and if we could choose only to be around people we are confident aren't secretly doing unhealthy things, the world would look different than this one

i’m not demanding flawless friends who never do or feel anything bad even in secret. i’m saying i’m no longer interested in sacrificing my peace to maintain relationships where emotional stability depends on mind reading and preemptive apologies

clark kent ticking the organ donor box on his drivers license automatically out of the goodness of his heart and then panicking because what if he actually dies somehow and some human gets a super heart what would even HAPPEN like he can't have his kryptonian retinas with laser vision donated to a random eight year old and so he has to awkwardly go back to the DMV to get it changed to not an organ donor but he's so embarrassed the whole time because the DMV employees will think he's a bad person that by the time he's done he has to go cry in the car
