hello!! welcome to my blog! this post serves as a navigation tool. this blog is still very much under construction, so a lot of things don't have links that work or links at all. at the moment, this blog isn't super mobile friendly, as everything works via pages instead of hyperlinks. i will be making a version with hyperlinks too eventually!

greetings from fellow objectumcity resident. obviously this stuff is complicated but do you have any recommendations for getting a basic understanding of… ~internal anatomy~ for fic-writing? Any good articles or videos?

here are some wikimedia commons categories and other things ive used in the past:

internals computer racks electrical enclosures open computer cases breakdown of components in an electrical control cabinet jsk robots - kengoro, kenshiro, kojiro

really the big thing is not to work from a vague memory of what you think electronics look like. its like drawing gore but only drawing like, the ribcage and intestines and nothing else. the joy is in the detail. work from references & human anatomy structure and simplify from there, you're working toward plausibility not perfect realism

edit: also realized you were talking like, information-wise. Electrical Motor Controls for Integrated Systems by Gary Rockis and Glen A. Mazur (isbn 0826912265) is what I used in college, it's a good primer. you can find it on (gestures vaguely) :pirate_flag:

here is the thing about steel. and this is a lesson i have learned the hard way. every so often you will decide a grade of steel is your favorite grade of steel. sometimes it's a superalloy and sometimes it's just something regular that you can buy at any vendor ever. and you will put that grade of steel in everything and think your life is hunky dory. and then suddenly someone will discover that your pet grade of steel has some obscure esoteric little problem with it that fucks up your whole day [ie it's way more brittle than you expected, or it becomes magnetic when welded. etc.]. so you freak out and run crying into the arms of another grade of steel, and this one is like shhhh baby don't worry you can trust me i'll never betray you like that. but believe me. they all will. every last one of them.

idc what anyone says, monsters motivated by love are a thousand times scarier than any other kind. hive minds that subsume all life out of a genuine belief that everyone will be happier that way. aliens that subjugate humanity out of a colonizer mindset of “helping” a primitive species. things that mutate bodies and minds out of a desire to “fix” or “cure” them. undead creatures that want to spread the curse to their loved ones so they also never have to die.

If your plot feels flat, STUDY it! Your story might be lacking...

Stakes - What would happen if the protagonist failed? Would it really be such a bad thing if it happened?

Thematic relevance - Do the events of the story speak to a greater emotional or moral message? Is the conflict resolved in a way that befits the theme?

Urgency - How much time does the protagonist have to complete their goal? Are there multiple factors complicating the situation?

Drive - What motivates the protagonist? Are they an active player in the story, or are they repeatedly getting pushed around by external forces? Could you swap them out for a different character with no impact on the plot? On the flip side, do the other characters have sensible motivations of their own?

Yield - Is there foreshadowing? Do the protagonist's choices have unforeseen consequences down the road? Do they use knowledge or clues from the beginning, to help them in the end? Do they learn things about the other characters that weren't immediately obvious?

When I was in college, my Creative Nonfiction professor would regularly have us do something she called "hotspotting" (she didn't know that this was already a term tbc) with our rough drafts. Basically, hotspotting is when you look at your draft and pick out your favorite sentence, or one of your favorite sentences--one that you're really proud of--and write it down in a blank sheet in a notebook. Not a new document, a physical notebook. (You are not allowed to use technology for hotspotting.) And then you set a timer for however long--like maybe ten to twenty minutes--and you elaborate. You treat that one sentence as if it's the opening sentence to a new draft, and you write from there, until the timer is up.

It sounds like a gimmick, but honestly, some of my best writing in that class came from hotspotting. Usually, the sentence you consider the "best" is the one that really gets to the heart of something you're trying to convey. In a rough draft, it tends to be that you're fumbling around a bit before you really hit on the heart of things. So with hotspotting, you're starting from a less fumbly place, which means you're able to dig into your subject in a much deeper and more precise way. It makes you feel like a surgeon, a little bit.

So I do recommend trying it, even just for fun, even if you think the rough draft you have is already good. You might surprise yourself with what you come up with! :)

Okay I JUST realized I never posted these on here—- BUT BASICALLY, about a year and a half ago I started doing these experimental black hairstyle posts that were threads long on Twitter, to give artists a source of inspo for their black ocs whose hair they wanted to try something new with! There’s more to black hair than just the selected styles portrayed in media, and I thought it would be fun to show people how much texture, shape, fades, length, and style can be combined when drawing black hair—-cause it’s a kind of manipulation our hair can do irl! it’s interesting how upset some people have gotten over negative things like homophobia and fatphobia being present in my writing. unfortunately I’ve had a life where those have been huge, shaping factors, and I like to talk about it. I was deeply anorexic for a number of years, and have had friendships and familial relationships deteriorate because of my queerness. being able to say “hey, this exists and it really, really sucks, now watch the fatphobic person get punched by a dragon” is kinda just what works for me, personally. I have a lot of feelings with nowhere else to put them, so my writing is always going to cater to my own catharsis.

I also want to push back against the idea that you can depict negative things like bigotry, so long as you also depict it being punished. there’s no Hays Code, and your story shouldn't have to be a children's fable with a moral lesson.

there's another book I've written that draws a lot from my own life (including verbatim conversations), and in it, not all the people with -isms get punished. some go on to live happy fulfilled lives, unaware of the damage they've sown, because that's often how it goes in real life. you're aware of the damage because you're inside the main character's head, and can you see how they've been affected, but that's it. no bigots getting punched by dragons this time. just one person learning how to live in a flawed society.

#theres a select group of discussions online ive seen that seem to treat the author as a much more passive entity than they really are #like things in a book Like bigoted characters and worldviews happen entirely by accident #and not as in the author made an active choice to have a social issue represented by a character #characters are not a living being. they are a vehicle of a story #the author does in fact control the vehicle #and things in books are much more purposeful than some make it out to be

Hive mind that actually really hates being a hive mind and it would like to stop being a hive mind as soon as possible, please. Fifteen scientists were in the room where a space rock exploded and welded their consciousnesses together. And even though it now has access to the memories of each of its linked individuals, whenever it tries to find in its gestalt mind where that personality, that individual who made those memories exists, it only finds a stump.

The mind looks at this tiny face. It knows, intellectually, that this is Kim Yun, daughter of Dr. Hana Yun, knows that she is four years old, loves blueberries, can only fall asleep while being sung Lavender’s Blue. It looks for the part of its brain where Dr. Hana Yun should be, tries to summon the mind that loves this child, to summon even a flicker of affection, to bring back the mother this child desperately misses.

The numbness hurts.

(Clumsy arms hold the child anyways, and a voice unused to singing still remembers the lyrics to Lavender’s Blue. It’s possible that this is close enough.)

#this is how the mechs in my story work #they retain a gestalt identity of the lives and memories of past pilots #the new pilots job is to untangle them and use their experiences with the mech #but without the pilot. the mech literally cannot operate on their on #its too loud. too chaotic #and the memories linger with the new pilot if they stay too long #resulting in memory imprints over their vision. confusion about their own identity. feelings that dont belong to them #the mech doesnt want the pilot to leave because they know that once they do #the chaos returns #the pilot is needed. the pilot cannot stay
