"I'm still kicking" is such a funny way to say "I'm still alive". Like lol. I'm still thrashing. Flailing. Writhing even. The violence remains.

if someone says ow during sex you stop and ask! Don’t keep going!!
If you finished first that’s fine!!! It’s normal!! But don’t just leave that person hanging!!

So, unlike Eridians, we discovered fire very early on and so our civilization kinda grew up with combustion right? We've had thousands of years to normalize it and get comfortable with the idea of using it casually for warmth or cooking etc.
In contrast, Eridians had to discover fire in a lab since their atmosphere doesnt have O2 like ours. So they dont have, like, an entire culture normalizing fire.
> Be me. Rocky the Eridian cosmonaut
> Tell Grace about Eridian space elevator design made out of Xenonite. Grace very impressed, says humans only dream about making space elevator.
> Odd? Ask Human friend Grace how humans got into space. Expecting some high tech solution since science humans clearly know more physics.
> Grace explains Humans strapped other Humans on top of Fire-Explodatron-9000 machines made out of weak human metal, basically Eridian cardboard, then shot them into orbit. Grace say the fire it makes is quite pretty to look at
I feel like the reaction would be similar to this.
Can you imagine being rocky tossing over that capsule during first contact. Like oh yeah, theyll probably use their robotic arm to catch it. And then you see like. This horribly clumsy alien come out of the ship, flailing about, wiggling across the hull trying to catch the capsule. Like oh. Oh so thats the kind of species i am dealing with

Occasionally forget people genuinely think capitalism is thousands of years old
One time I was talking about Robin Hood with some coworkers and one guy was like “he was bad because the people he helped learned to expect handouts” and I wanted to be like… okay can you explain how that flawed capitalist propaganda applies to feudalism
reminder that capitalism was literally invented in the 16th century
That’s an exaggeration. What was invented in the 16th century was mercantilism. Capitalism really dates for the beginning of the nineteenth century, with the rise of industry and cash crops over artisans and merchants. Vulture capitalism, with the notion that companies have no duties other than generating profit, is even younger.
Capitalism is only 200 years old and I have to say, they have not been an impressive 200 years
I think a lot of this comes from the fact that most people don’t know the formal definition of capitalism. We all know the word, we’ve all seen the jokes, but very few people bother to actually define it unless they’re talking about political theory and philosophy, so it’s easy to end up with the impression that Capitalism = Money Can Be Exchanged For Goods And Services.
Capitalism is the economic system where most of the means of production (i.e. everything people need to have to make the stuff that everyone wants) are owned by private individuals or corporations, who then hire people to provide the labor necessary to produce things, with the intent of selling the output at a profit. It’s the difference between “you’re a carpenter and you make a chair and you sell it” and “you’re Richard Q. Richington who owns a chair factory, and you pay people to sell the chairs you paid other people to make and then all the excess money goes back to you.” There have been Richard Q. Richingtons on and off throughout history, but that being the norm for every single industry is a pretty recent development.
An alarming amount of people seem to think capitalism = all trade, and I don’t think that’s a coincidence.
A computer is a machine, a phone is a gadget, printers and keyboards are contraptions, mice are gizmos, headphones are doohickeys, and earbuds are doodads.
saw this on Facebook and thought "wow that's pretty helpful I'm going to share it on tumblr, i'll just crop off the thing about the tick that got left out" but then I read the comments and decided I had to share those too because same

There really is something fucked up about the town we grew up in
this place doesn't feel like it should be actually real
the town is always growing physically, but it rots from the inside out at the same speed. Buildings are built, added onto the edge of town, then years later the business dies, and it is left abandoned. And the cycle repeats. The town is a canvas with spots of life separated by holes that are utterly, completely abandoned and dead.
It's old, in theory. But nothing here actually seems it. It's all new, we paved over the old three times over.
Oh, and the people. Everyone young knows the saying, "if you're smart, pretty, or strong you get out of this town the moment you're 18". The old-timers are all backwards, and on balance conservative, but the funny thing is that for most of 'em? If you know how to speak, they'll listen anyway.
It all feels... wrong.
And that's not even mentioning the really weird things.
The roads around here are like a labyrinth. Your intuition is screaming that you need to make a turn, or go a particular direction, at a handful of these intersections. But if you do, you'll end up somewhere you never even knew existed.
And if you're a person who believes in the supernatural, like we are- this town is full of ghosts.
Full of ghosts.
No matter where you are, every house is haunted to some extent. Sometimes it's just minor. Sometimes things just go missing, right?
But almost everyone has a few stories of hearing music in the middle of the night, of hearing voices in the woods, of ending up somewhere they shouldn't be.
And that's not mentioning the coyotes, either.
Of course, coyotes aren't supernatural. But the sounds we've heard in the middle of the night, from pieces of forest that were dense with Kudzu to the point of being impossible to see into, I'm not sure we can credit all of those to simple canids.
Maybe it's just that when you live somewhere for most of your life you start to notice all the weird shit happening. But something about this place really does feel wrong, in every possible way.
Oh my friend, this is fully sincere, you are correct, but we do realize just how... insane it sounds.
And this post doesn't even talk about the witch doctors.
Y'see, there are two doctors in this town that stand out. One vet, one GP.
The vet, she owns her own practice, runs it out of a building in the older part of town. Everyone knows that if your animal is sick, and no other vet can take care of them, she'll be able to.
She manages to revive animals that should've died, do surgeries that should take 2 hours in half that time, and makes diagnoses with intuition that are correct far more often than not.
The other one, the human one? Well, she's the only doctor anyone with chronic illness in the town trusts. She'll tell you what's wrong with you. She'll talk with you with the same confidence a tenured professor has, and she'll break down your every symptom, then point you to people who can actually help. The best doctor we've ever seen, the only doctor who rescued our mother from the jaws of death on 3-5 separate occasions.
The town shouldn't exist. Something about it is wrong.
I'd recommend never investigating a scream you hear from the woods next door. It's just the coyotes. But we all know that's a lie.

Well, I don't live in this town any longer, but when I started listening to WTNV a few years ago, it did ring a little too close to home. Though, this town happens to be on the other side of the country, so it has a different vibe.
Y'know, this town has a few too many cemeteries, for the number of people it has. In town, there's 3 of them. One for veterans, two church graveyards. But those are far from the only ones -- there's another 4, 5, maybe even 6 graveyards in the county, just outside of city limits. All of them are attached to churches, if memory serves, but the thing is- most of them are full, or close to it. This is not a large town, mind. It's a town that has maybe 30,000 people. Maybe more if you count the county's population as well, but that still isn't much.
And yet, we have so, so many dead.
And people wonder why we have so many ghosts.
Nah you're not from night vale but we are in the running for that title
Yeah no our town is fucked up but your entire life sounds like it should be a plotline from WTNV

it would be so awesome
it would be so cool
and this isn't even getting into harm that's genuinely necessary! i read a book recently that was intended to educate people in healthcare about medical trauma, written by a medical professional who found that there weren't existing resources to help her cope with the aftermath of the extremely traumatic c section that saved her life. the whole tone of the book was "i know you've never thought about this before, but walk with me through this case study" and it's aimed at other medical professionals! it's aimed at the people who are doing this harm, and so many of them think that people aren't allowed to find it harmful just because it's necessary!
so many trauma resources assume that your trauma is from a specific person or people who treated you in a way that society deems unacceptable. if your trauma doesn't fit that profile then you're left sitting there like. idk i dont think most of this stuff applies to me. where are the resources for people like me.
if you were ever scared or in pain and were told that you had to grin and bear it because it's necessary for you to do the thing that scares and hurts you, you are allowed to say that that was traumatic. you are allowed to say that you were scared and in pain and that even if this was the least bad option, even if it was lifesaving, it still was not okay. something being necessary does not inherently make it okay.
