Remember that time I gave up my whole life in Milwaukee 4 years ago today, because anorexia was killing me? It took 10 years of behaviors and another two weeks before I actually entered treatment on February 13, 2014. I walked into treatment and told everyone, "I have to be back to work, so I'll only be here for two weeks." My friends still make fun of me for saying that. It would be 90 weeks before I returned to Milwaukee, but I made it eventually. Now I'm here, way better than before, and a grateful heart to be able to give back to my community and share what I learned while I was away. Thanks @beatingeatingdisorders. I'm candid about when I'm struggling with eating disorder stuff, but I'm not very good about talking about suicidality. Why? I lost my closest person to suicide. I don't think I'll ever be comfortable talking about it publicly, but losing this person changed my life. When I went through struggles, I would ask myself "Why are you so depressed? You're living the life they couldn't. You should be grateful, not suicidal." The guilt and shame have been and, at times, still are overwhelming. I've had so many times where I've just wanted to give up. I've been hospitalized 3 times for suicidality, but in reality, I've had 8 suicide attempts since I was 11. 8. That's just attempts. Not moments where I've been suicidal. That number is inconceivable now. I'm almost 2 years attempt free now, which is unbelievable. I never thought I would get to the day where I wouldn't be suicidal everyday. That seemed unimaginable, but here we are and it's amazing. June 2011, I wore a similarly skimpy costume on the same stage during Guys and Dolls. Every night, I would be plagued with anxiety while dancing having thoughts of "All of these people are looking at my horrible, fat body," "I'm so disgusting that everyone must be grossed out by me," and similar thoughts. It got so bad one night that I went off stage and threw up from self-hatred. I was at my lowest weight and in one of the worst periods of my eating disorder. 6 years later, I'm at my highest weight but the happiest I've ever been. #stcCabaret has helped remind me of why I love dancing and for the first time in a long time, I can dance without having the thoughts of everyone looking at my body. Dance is finally the freedom it used to be again. We have two more shows, tomorrow and Saturday at 7:30 PM. Please come join us at the #KitKatKlub!
