You may have seen Ruby Zamora online. With her love of 90s aesthetics, fashion,and freeform conversations with her following. She’s known to be a little messy but a lot of fun and that’s what people seem to love about her. What she isn’t prone to telling others though is that she went through a pretty big evolution to get to this point.
Whether it’s true or not; Ruby has always related a bit to being a bird in a gilded cage . Born in Aurora Bay to Nadine Zamora and a father who ran a pretty successful business. Ruby felt as though she had a very loving but uneventful life. It wasn’t until her mother had died in an accident; when Ruby was only five when things had changed. Ruby took it hard but her father may have taken it even harder.
After that day her father became overprotective, he believed that his wife had died because he wasn’t paying enough attention to his family and so he started to overdo it on the parenting. It happened so slowly but eventually by the time Ruby was a teenager, she realized how much it had impacted her. She was incredibly naive and a little gullible in her teen years which is brutal when around her peer group. She felt so sheltered and never really knew how to talk to anyone let alone boys. Her father had her spoiled sweet but it still didn’t give her the confidence she needed in her real life, When she’d have a crush she’d just sort of stand there and be unable to say anything to them. It was a nightmare
But she wasn’t hopeless forever
Her escape was being online. It was the one place her dad’s overprotective nature didnt reach. One day she’d be writing some pretty popular fan fiction. Then she’d be hitting up Letterboxd in its early days, making Pinterest boards like she was getting paid for them. Online Ruby had a social life that the real her wished she could have outside. At school she still couldn’t talk to people and was bad at asking anyone out. But online Ruby was quickly forming a small following. She started to come into her own, but it would take a pretty startling revelation to make her realize that her father’s behavior had a reason beyond looking out for her best interests.
Her internet connections put her into contact with someone who claimed to be related to Ruby. The information didn’t make sense to her. There was no way her father could have another child but when she asked him about the situation he came clean. He’d had an affair back when her parents were together and had another daughter. It was one of those situations where he knew he was doing the wrong thing but he still did it. When Nadine died, he took it as a sign that his own behavior had caused this. It was karma for not being a faithful husband.
The revelation broke Ruby’s heart and shook her trust in her father. It was why he’d kept her sheltered and She even questioned him as to whether or not her new step mom was another person he had been cheating on her mom with . But he vehemently denied that being a thing. Even her stepmother who had been like a real mother to her had said she had never met her father just til after Nadine died. That was the one thing that had gave her any faith in her family. But it did cause a crack in the relationship. Ruby took a stand and told her father he couldn’t keep overprotecting her just to make himself feel less guilty.
On that day Ruby took her mother’s maiden name to honor her and decided that naive and gullible were so last season.
Since then Ruby had fully emerged herself into her internet life. No longer was she trapped her the gilded cage that her father had put her in and she embraced her inner messy girl. She’s well known for her Y2K and 90s vibes that would make Charli XCX appreciate her. Her hot takes on fashion and people had her building up a pretty big following. though after a scandal where she picked up some sponsors with some less then credible products; her platform isn’t as big as she would like it to be. She calls it her big mistake but she’s trying to move on from it especially after the product was known to cause rashes. It’s making her realize that maybe the best of intentions can still cause mistakes. So she’s taking her work more serious but is enjoying her freedom and profile confidence that had come from becoming an influencer. Ruby finally feels comfortable with herself and with other people. She still has a soft spot for the naive girl she used to be; and she’s been willing to actually talk to her dad again after his big betrayal.
