Charlotte Durnam was barely sixteen when she gave birth to her daughter, Penelope. It was a shock to her parents since it didn't fit with their classic Beverly Hills lifestyle. Penny's father tried to do his best to be there for Charlotte, but it was clear neither were ready for the commitment of marriage. He stayed in contact with Charlotte, then it became harder when he moved away for college and after a semester away he stopped calling altogether. At first Charlotte tried to stick around at home, but it didn't work out. At the age of eighteen, she made it as far as Aurora Bay before she ran out of money. Thankfully, an elderly woman named Louise was looking for a live-in companion to help her with daily tasks and she was all too happy to give Charlotte and little Penny the space to grow. Charlotte knew that despite the stability, her job with Louise wouldn't last forever. She got a nursing degree from Aurora Bay College and when Louise died, Charlotte began working at the hospital and the two of them moved to Fisher's Cove.
Penny had a stable life, despite being close in age with her mother, the two acted more like best friends than anything else. She was a curious child and was interested in the world around her. Every couple of months, she would get a call from her father, which felt like a treat. Penny knew that her mom worked hard to provide for her, so she grew up appreciative of what she had. Every year, her and her mom would make the drive to her grandparent's house to celebrate the holidays. Penny remembers them fondly, but she knew it was tense for her mother. Because of her mom's strained relationship with her parents, Penny's relationship with her grandparents was also a bit strained. And despite Penny's father showing up occasionally, she rarely counted on him to show up.
Instead of going to Aurora Bay High School, Penny's grandparents paid for her to go to a private school. It was at school that she met Jack, a sophomore who was decently popular. Through her new friend, she met Cassandra Croft and became close with her and her friend group. Penny loved high school, joining her school's cheerleading squad and the school newspaper. She was well liked by everyone in the school. While she could get intense about her grades, she really did flourish. From a young age, Penny knew she wanted to travel. When her friends all told her about a trip to Australia they were taking over the summer, Penny begged her mom to let her go with them. She used all her savings from her grandparents, dad, and the money her mom gave her to be able to go with her friends. The trip was amazing and gave her a real taste at what the world was really like and she loved it. On their trip, the group met Felix and Dante Kumara. Penny loved meeting new people and making new friends. She was happy when Felix decided to come visit them in California and she was happy even when Cass and Felix started dating.
It was only after Felix and Cass started dating did Jack ask her out. Penny had a crush on him for so long, she was glad that he finally saw her that way. Unlike other groups, theirs didn't fall apart after graduation. Penny decided not to go out of state for college, wanting to study journalism at Aurora Bay College. She and Jack's relationship only grew more as time went on, but there was always something off about the relationship. Jack would leave dates early whenever Cass called crying about something Felix did or said, not even bothering to apologize to Penny. She tried not to think too much about it because everything with them seemed alright. After graduating college, Jack asked if she wanted to get an apartment together. They'd both gotten jobs in Aurora Bay; Penny had gotten a job at the newspaper, not exactly her dream job, but being close to home was important to her. It seemed like everything was going well for her, for her friends, for her mom.
When Cass announced that she was pregnant, Penny couldn't be happier for her friend. She knew that her relationship with Felix had been getting rocky and she was honestly, but she figured if they were at that point, they'd probably worked everything out. Jack's mood was sour for days after and Penny had no idea why, she tried to stay out of his way. When Paedyn was born and Felix moved to California, Penny expected it to be like it was before, but a lot had changed. She had her own career to focus on and her own troubles to focus on, so she mostly paid attention to herself. She did notice that Cassandra seemed to be a good mother and that's all that mattered to her.
Then New Year 2025 happened. Cass had made it seem like it was going to be a lowkey event. Penny had a deadline at work and couldn't arrive until later, needing to take some pictures for the paper of Aurora Bay's celebrations. She knew that Pae was with Cass, so she fully expected something small. But when she arrived it was anything but that. It took her one walkthrough of her friend's place to notice that nothing was suitable for a small child to be at. She did what she thought anyone would do and called Felix. It all came to when Cass and Felix started fighting and she realized it was Penny that called. Penny knew it was the right thing to do and yet both Cass and Jack were acting like she was the bad guy in the situation. When the cops were called, Penny gave her statement and knew in her heart that any relationship she had with Cass and Jack were entirely over. After Felix left with Pae, Penny let them both have it before leaving herself. She packed her bags and moved to a different apartment where she's been ever since.
The next few months were rough on Penny, dealing with the fall out as well as the heartbreak. She decided she didn't want to keep her head down and figured a little fun wouldn't hurt. After meeting a man in his late 30s, she figured she'd have a bit of fun for a while, then go on her way. That couple of weeks turned into a couple of months, though she did break it off with him midway through September. Towards the end of October, she noticed a few odd things happening with her health and made a doctor's appointment, only to find out that she'd pregnant. She has yet to tell anyone, scared of what her mom might think and terrified of what her ex might think.

Bridget had seen it often enough over the years to recognise it instantly: the lingering glance, the flicker of uncertainty, the quiet debate over whether or not to come over. It was definitely good to get out once in a while, but in this case it was a must have sort of thing. “ yeah I think by that logic the Winchester Mystery House is fully off the table then. There are plenty of things to do a lot closer by too! It just depends on things you like. There’s a lot of really cool museums in the city if you like those?”
“ we can’t definitely make that work, especially if I can find a room divider that would be cute for both aesthetics. If anything i can use scrap fabric and do two different sides too. That way it could fit and cause a break without actually keeping you from the baby”@pennydurnam
"I love a good adventure. I'd love to get out of this town for a little bit too." Penny knew that she should be careful these days because there were people outside town she didn't want to run into, but she also didn't care. If she was having a fun time with someone, it wouldn't matter. "My grandparents live in Beverly Hills so I've been to a lot of museums closer to them. I wish I could go anywhere right now. Like all over the place visiting museums." She hadn't done anything fun since before Halloween. Penny had been too tired.
"Yes, I love that. I'm down for anything. It'll be nice to have something nice for the baby." Penny knew that she could plan on her own, but it was nice having some help too. "My mom thinks I should paint the room green, but I like yellow."

"Which is great. I wish I'd have gotten to go to high school here. My mom wanted me to go to private school." Not that it made anything worse, but she might have more friends that did go to school here. "Yeah, I was around for that, but I wasn't like writing for the paper yet." She wasn't where she was now and Penny knew that even if she was, she'd been in a different mental space then. "Exactly! Like there are actors in town."
Penny nodded. "I like more of a bright pink. Not neon or anything." The typical bright pink of poppies.
"I feel like you should totally teach him how to skateboard. It's like the point of having a sibling to teach them cool stuff." Penny never had a sibling to worry about, though she'd always been jealous of those that did. "No, but I mean... it'd be weird. I'm gonna have to adjust to a whole new lifestyle and I can't expect him to be completely okay with that. Even if I do like him."
Diego knew things would be a little different once the baby came, but overall he hasn't minded having the little dudette around. He's just been kind of worried about Penny and the stress of it all and it doesn't seem for no reason as he comes home, finding her in distress. There's no hesitation when he hears her plea, his backpack falling to the floor as he arrives, "whoa, hey." Diego slides into place and pulls her close, "I got you, dude."
Penny was thankful that she did have a support system. The hospital had warned her that she could be a bit sad after the birth. Sad felt like an understatement. She was really thankful that people kept checking up on her. "It's fine. I'm fine." She wasn't fine. Today had been a struggle. Penny wanted togo back to work, but she didn't want to leave the baby either. She melted into a hug. "I needed this." She sniffled. "I'm sorry."
"You sure?" Eden asked out of excitement for her friend to have someone crushing on him. "Oh? Well, I wouldn't put pressure on dating, but you're allowed to like him." She shrugged her shoulders. "What do you mean?"
"Yeah, I'm sure. It would be weird living with him if he... you know, didn't have the same feelings." Penny really didn't know that she cared about that too much. "Oh, yeah, I know. I don't want to over step if someone else likes him though. Which is why I was curious if you did." Okay, maybe she was trying to get intel. "I think I should probably settle into motherhood first before I start dating. Maybe that's just me though."

"I have lots of good friends. Felix, Diego, Spencer, Ruby, Emerson. I don't know that I'd consider them my partner in anything other than the chaos that's life. Maybe Diego is my partner in parenting?"

Felix knew it was probably overwhelming to have too many visitors in the hospital so he decided to visit Penny at her home once she gave him the okay. He had balloons (all picked out by Paedyn) and a gift for both Penny and the baby.
“Delivery!” He said as the door was opened to reveal him with the balloons and Paedyn with a gift bag. “Congratulations! How are you feeling?” He tried to focus his attention on his friend for a moment before letting his excitement to see the baby cause him to forget that she’d been through something beyond difficult.
The only people Penny had let into the hospital to see her were her mom and Diego. Everyone else she'd texted that she would visit them at some point or they could come see her later. Penny knew her dad was probably going to eventually stop by to see his grandchild.
She'd kept the door unlocked since Felix said he was going to stop by. Penny hadn't really left the couch for the last couple of days, choosing that as her place to rest. "Oh my gosh. You brought balloons? Did Pae pick them out?" she asked. "I'm doing okay. Still tired." Penny shifted on the couch. "Do you want to see the baby?"
“ What’s like a hard hitting story? Like the mayor took someone’s dog or something like that?” Spencer asked as he glanced over to Penny. He actually didn’t know what sort of stories were hard hitting and was guessing. “ profiles sound pretty cool though. “ he nodded trying to move on from his own comment about public figures taking pets “ oh damn that’s actually a hard hitting question too “ he teased back at her before answering. “ I like purple “
“ yeah, how much longer till the tiny little one gets here?” He asks before glancing over to her with a smile. “ I don’t think he’d ever be bothered by you Penny. Like come on, you’re a delight “ he nodded before his eyes went wide. “ whoa no kidding. That is actually kind of romantic “ @pennydurnam
"I don't know. Corruption? Arson? Vandalism? There's not too much of that here. Or at least since I got a job at the paper." There were not a lot of stories about those things lately and even if there were, she was doing mostly puff pieces. "I like the profiles. They can be fun if you get an interesting person. There's a lot of interesting people here too." Penny laughed. "Purple's a good color. I respect it. Mine's pink." There was something calming about it.
"Not long. Like another month." She didn't want to talk about how miserable she was. "I might be a delight, but there's going to be a baby in the apartment soon. That's probably going to get old kind of quickly. And like... I don't want to move out because I don't want to move back home with my mom and I like Diego." Penny realized what she said only after she said it. "I don't think Diego likes me like that. He's too much of a catch to go out with me."
“ yeah? Perfect because I am an avid adventurer. Like there’s some cool places here and all but it’s when you get to the city that things for decorating really sort of fall into place. “ Ruby explained as she glanced back at Penny with a smile. Her sort of need to not overspend had a lot to do with how she was raised. She had everything she could have ever wanted but she didn’t want it. She wanted her dad to stop paying her out of guilt. So she rarely touched his money aside from emergencies . And it was how Ruby became a fashion influencer who specialized in upcycling. Penny really has no idea what she signed on for because Ruby is ready to work. “ oh I like that. Minus the ghosts and the dangerous doors that open outside on the second floor “
“ okay hear me out but we do our neutrals and all that to give a timeless feel. But then we do some accents with baby pink. It would really give it a bit more high fashion without the pretense” @pennydurnam
"Me too, even though the most adventurous these days I get is going to the doctor on foot instead of driving." She wished that she could go more places, but that was probably not in her cards for a while. Penny didn't mind. Local adventures were still pretty fun. "I would love to get out of town for a bit and do something fun." Last time she'd been seeing a guy who turned out to be awful. Well... two guys. But that was beside the point. "Well who knows. Maybe there will be ghosts. I'd just avoid all the dangerous doors that open to nowhere. And like... fire hazards or whatever." She liked mysteries like that.
"I don't know. I really like the idea of colorful walls and less colorful decorations. I think that would be cute. But if we separate out the room then maybe my side could be more neutral and the baby's side could have yellow walls. That way there's two different feels? I don't know if that's a good idea or more work."
