The Irritating Gentleman - Berthold Woltze
1874
why does this communicate the universal mood we women experience so perfectly
This is doubly annoying because sheâs clearly in mourning; look at her clothes. those are mourning clothes. The way she clutches her handkerchief. The wetness of her eyes. Sheâs not a lark to the seaside, sheâs traveling to or from a funeral. And this dandy fuckboy canât look beyond his own nose and have some fucking respect.
This is why I support artists. You can tell a story without any words at all. You donât even need to title this piece âThe Irritating Gentlemanâ and yet most 21st Century women will know exactly what this 19th Century woman endured on the day of that painting.
And look how she is dressed. Not a piece of skin exposed. So dont tell me its our miniskirts that makes men do this!
Sis is reaching for that hatpin hell yes stab him
he deserves that stab
The only reason that the anakin and padme ship is called Anidala is because everyone is collectively trying to avoid calling it Anime
KISS KISS FALL IN LAVA
been doing my mandatory yearly rewatch of avatar and you know what I realised?
toph was never really affected by the war.
in the episode where zuko shows up to try and join the gaang, sokka katara and aang are all extremely opposed to this option, but toph is willing to give zuko a chance - and she says it herself, that there isnât any other option and the judgement of katara and the others is clouded by their personal grudges, and sheâs right. but the thing that I realised much later is that not only does toph not hold a grudge against zuko because sheâs not had any real experiences with him/is more forgiving than the others, but also because toph never really had any real stakes in the war in the first place.
sure, sheâs an earth kingdom citizen and an earthbender, but her wealth would have protected her if the Fire Nation reached Gaoling and having been raised in such an isolated manner wherein she has (apparently) no lower class friends whose fathers and brothers wouldâve been sent off to fight, she doesnât know anyone who is directly affected by the war. I bet her parents also kept her completely away from any news of the war in order to âprotectâ her, and so unlike katara, sokka, suki and aang toph never actually was affected by the war on a personal level, which makes it so easy for her to forgive zuko and allow him in to the group. Itâs easy to see katara and sokka as overeacting to her suggestion to let zuko train aang, but the only time the fire nation actively affected her family or her living situation was when azula wouldnât let them sleep that one week. I donât think toph was actually ever aware of the full extent of the damage the fire nation had inflicted on the world - I think if she had been, her demeanor would have been much angrier than how she was portrayed. because of the above, there never was any real reason for toph to hate zuko without having ever met him, and for the same reasons she is not really affected by the othersâ horror at iroh having approached them to save zuko.
Itâs just interesting how the avatar universe portrays privilege in this particular situation and how it affects the opinions and decisions that toph has/makes.
IF YOU ARE UNMARRIED, DON'T HAVE KIDS, AND HATE YOUR PARENTS PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD HAVE A FUCKING WILL
this has been a public service announcement from your friendly neighborhood probate lawyer
Again:
1. The law doesn't care how long your parents and family have been out of your life
2. The law doesn't care about your long term friends or "found family"
If you don't have legal documents that say otherwise, your biological family calls all the shots.
This goes especially for LGBTQ+. Please do not get deadnamed in your obituary.

Hereâs something cute
When lockdown happened in the UK it happened very suddenly. At the law firm I work at, our office building emptied overnight when everyone was told to work from home. No time to clear our desks, no time to bring office plants home.
Fast forward three and a half months - everyone assumes that their plants are dead.
But then! An email goes round! Itâs turns out that one of our security guards is a florist, and -
-the security team has moved EVERY SINGLE PLANT from all 12 FLOORS of our office building into the cafeteria. Itâs been turned into a temporary greenhouse. Cacti and succulents and spider plants and terrariums and potted ferns
AND! Each plant has been INDIVIDUALLY LABELLED by hand with post-it notes with name and desk location so the plants can go home after lockdown ends
To give some indication of the scale of the endeavour:
If you zoom into the centre right photo you can see one of our security team happily waving
The plants are being taken care of tenderly. They get sun and water and are spending happy times with other plant friends
I'm actually tearing up a little bit
Ah the free market at work. (Similar to when I went to CVS to pickup a 90$ prescription and they had their own generic version for 7.99).
This is important! Tell your Friends.
I canât believe some insurances quit covering them đ
From Slate:
The generic Adrenaclick will cost $109.99 for two doses, compared with $649.99 for the same amount of drug in an EpiPen. Thatâs good news, both for financial and safety reasons: STAT reported last year that some parents and institutions had begun filling up syringes with epinephrine as a cost-cutting measure, a DIY solution that could pose great risk to the children who may have eventually needed injections. A more affordable alternative will help ensure safer epinephrine injections.
Thatâs assuming, though, that the people who need these devices know exactly what to ask for when theyâre sitting in their doctorsâ offices. Otherwise, theyâll still be stuck with the overpriced product. Hereâs why: The mechanism by which Adrenaclick injects the drug is slightly different from EpiPenâs mechanism, so the Food and Drug Administration has ruled that the two are not therapeutically equivalent. That distinction is important because it means a prescription for an EpiPen cannot be filled with Adrenaclick. If you want the cheaper option, you have to have an Adrenaclick prescription.
You must ask your doctor for an Adrenaclick prescription!Â
I also found a coupon from Impax on 0.15mg and 0.3mg epinephrine injection, USP auto-injectors, which appear to be the generic version of Adrenaclick; these coupons cover up to $100 per pack for 3 packs of these injectors (6 total injectors).
Some customers may be automatically eligible for $100 off the retail price thus only paying $10 for a pack, but this may be good backup for those who for whatever reason do not meet those requirements.
Pass this information on, potentially save a life.

Few plants will get a mushroom hunter as jump-up-and-cheer excited as this one! This is Allotropa virgata, called candystick, sugar stick, or the barberpole plant. Itâs a bizarre mycoheterotrophic plant with no chlorophyll thatâs in the blueberry family, Ericaceae. The reason itâs so exciting to see this plant is that it feeds by taking nutrients from Tricholoma matsutake mycelia exclusively. Tricholoma matsutake, is, of course, the Matsutake mushroom! Itâs edible and quite tasty. Where you see a candystick in the spring, you know youâll find Matsutake in the fall. Â

I had to pass on this reblog đ Also, to anyone reblogging this with the note âfungiâ, please remember that this is a plant! This is a big deal because you can collect fungal fruiting bodies and the fungus will be fine. If you pick this plant, itâll just die, and it wonât come back! I see people do this in foraging forums - they mistake parasitic plants for fungi and unwittingly destroy them.

Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?
The answer is NO.
The âfactâ that junk food is cheaper than real food has become a reflexive part of how we explain why so many Americans are overweight, particularly those with lower incomes. I frequently read confident statements like, âwhen a bag of chips is cheaper than a head of broccoli âŚâ or âitâs more affordable to feed a family of four at McDonaldâs than to cook a healthy meal for them at home.â
(via sunfoundation)
this bullshit fills me with a very specific kind of rage. so, TIME TO DEBUNK!
that meal from mcdonalds takes virtually no time to acquire AND is available almost anywhere.
the second meal? that âsaladâ is lettuce ⌠with nothing else, not even dressing unless its just olive oil or some milk i guess? gross.
also thats the price of each serving, not an entire loaf of bread, a bottle of olive oil, etc. that stuff adds up which means you have to have a lot of money at one time to buy it all.
that meal probably took an hour and a half to make, which is a long fucking time when you work multiple jobs or are caring for a lot of people or dont have help! seriously, if you are a single parent of three who works, is spending an hour and a half every night preparing a meal a likely option?
same with beans and rice! also, you know whats a fucking bummer? eating beans and rice every night because you are poor. ask any person who has done it and they will tell you (you can start with me).
there is a ânutritionâ argument here that lacks a follow up: poor people are more likely to be doing physical labor and need more than 571 calories per meal.
you know who is less likely to know how to bake or prepare a chicken? people without access to the internet, or libraries, or who werent taught how to by their parents because their parents worked all the time. access to healthy foods is a classist issue and classism is cyclical, you fucking morons.
seriously, these sorts of infographics make me want to fucking flip tables. do you know why people donât eat more fresh fruits and vegetables? because fresh fruits and vegetables are expensive, because they take a long time to prepare, because they dont live near a grocery store that has a decent produce section, because they dont have reliable transportation to get groceries to and from the grocery store, because they dont have the energy to plan all of the shit that is involved in making healthy, intentional, filling, balanced meals. basically: poor people get fucked, and then we get BLAMED for being lazy.
eating âhealthyâ, aka access to fresh fruits and vegetables, is a privilege, first, foremost, always. so fuck you new york times and your ignorant goddamn infographic.
there are SYSTEMATIC REASONS that we do not have equal access to fresh fruits and vegetables. they are very REAL problems. besides, you know, systematic poverty in america, the total mis-distribution of farm subsidies is a perfect place to start. read about that, then either get bent or start working on the actual problem.
This is important hello (x)
Reblogging again for the fuckboy who ignored it the first time
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT
*slow clap for australia* shit mates. Wow.
I will probably reblog this once a day
Reblog. Always reblog.
Skylar Brandt was supposed to debut as Aurora today but since the season was canceled she debuted her own Rose Adagio.
Ok this is SO COOL because the Rose Adagio is a partnered danceâAurora does exactly whatâs shown in the video, but with the prince there rotating her and holding her waist, both for the attitude balance and the pirouettes. That wobbling you see while she turns? Thatâs not because sheâs off balance (you could literally never do this without absolutely pinpoint perfect balance), thatâs from the subtle movement of her foot to rotate herself. She is all the way en pointe, rotating sheerly by veeeery slightly adjusting her foot. You may be looking at this going âI donât know much about ballet, but this looks pretty amazing.â I know ballet, and let me tell you, this is 100%, absolutely, INSANELY difficult, impressive, and fucking radical. Amazing doesnât even begin to describe it.
Mr. Rogers had an intentional manner of speaking to children, which his writers called âFreddishâ. There were nine steps for translating into Freddish:Â
âState the idea you wish to express as clearly as possible, and in terms preschoolers can understand.â Example: It is dangerous to play in the street. ââââââ
âRephrase in a positive manner,â as in It is good to play where it is safe.
âRephrase the idea, bearing in mind that preschoolers cannot yet make subtle distinctions and need to be redirected to authorities they trust.â As in, âAsk your parents where it is safe to play.â
âRephrase your idea to eliminate all elements that could be considered prescriptive, directive, or instructive.â In the example, thatâd mean getting rid of âaskâ: Your parents will tell you where it is safe to play.
âRephrase any element that suggests certainty.â Thatâd be âwillâ: Your parents can tell you where it is safe to play.
âRephrase your idea to eliminate any element that may not apply to all children.â Not all children know their parents, so: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play.
âAdd a simple motivational idea that gives preschoolers a reason to follow your advice.â Perhaps: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is good to listen to them.
âRephrase your new statement, repeating the first step.â âGoodâ represents a value judgment, so: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is important to try to listen to them.
âRephrase your idea a ďŹnal time, relating it to some phase of development a preschooler can understand.â Maybe: Your favorite grown-ups can tell you where it is safe to play. It is important to try to listen to them, and listening is an important part of growing.
Mr. Rogers Had a Simple Set of Rules for Talking to Children - The Atlantic
Rogers brought this level of care and attention not just to granular details and phrasings, but the bigger messages his show would send. Hedda Sharapan, one of the staff members at Fred Rogersâs production company, Family Communications, Inc., recalls Rogers once halted taping of a show when a cast member told the puppet Henrietta Pussycat not to cry; he interrupted shooting to make it clear that his show would never suggest to children that they not cry.
In working on the show, Rogers interacted extensively with academic researchers. Daniel R. Anderson, a psychologist formerly at the University of Massachusetts who worked as an advisor for the show, remembered a speaking trip to Germany at which some members of an academic audience raised questions about Rogersâs direct approach on television. They were concerned that it could lead to false expectations from children of personal support from a televised figure. Anderson was impressed with the depth of Rogersâs reaction, and with the fact that he went back to production carefully screening scripts for any hint of language that could confuse children in that way.
In fact, Freddish and Rogersâs philosophy of child development is actually derived from some of the leading 20th-century scholars of the subject. In the 1950s, Rogers, already well known for a previous childrenâs TV program, was pursuing a graduate degree at The Pittsburgh Theological Seminary when a teacher there recommended he also study under the child-development expert Margaret McFarland at the University of Pittsburgh. There he was exposed to the theories of legendary faculty, including McFarland, Benjamin Spock, Erik Erikson, and T. Berry Brazelton. Rogers learned the highest standards in this emerging academic field, and he applied them to his program for almost half a century.
This is one of the reasons Rogers was so particular about the writing on his show. âI spent hours talking with Fred and taking notes,â says Greenwald, âthen hours talking with Margaret McFarland before I went off and wrote the scripts. Then Fred made them better.â As simple as Mister Rogersâ Neighborhood looked and sounded, every detail in it was the product of a tremendously careful, academically-informed process.
I really wish someone had told me this before I had kids. I had no idea how to speak to kids. Honestly, I still donât. My daughter is 12 and has always been talked to as an adult which is both good and bad.

NDP MP, Leah Gazan has introduced a motion calling for the CERB to be turned into a permanent basic income:
https://twitter.com/LeahGazan/status/1292932401757212672
Now would be a good time to write to your MPâs and demand that they support this motion:
https://www.ourcommons.ca/en/contact-us
Tagging: @politicsofcanada
If you have the time/energy to write a letter to your MP, that goes farther than signing a petition! If an MP is presented with a petition, no matter how many signatures, they can talk about that petition/issue once. If an MP gets multiples letters from multiple individuals, they can bring an issue to the floor EACH time they receive a letter.
1. Whoa I had no idea. Iâve considered moving to Manitoba and definitely would if this passed. Would me living in Ontario still make a letter meaningful?
This isnât really about Manitoba. She represents a riding in Manitoba, but the idea would apply all across Canada as sheâs a Federal Member of Parliament.
In order for the government to consider her motion, it needs to receive majority support, so convincing your MP no matter where they live is important.
It wonât pass with just the support of the NDP. At the very least some Liberals, Greens, Bloc and Conservatives will need to vote yes.
If this passes does this mean that you dont have to repay the money anymore and that anyone that works fir minimum wage or are on assistance would be able to also sign up for it if their over 18?
Sorry if thus has already been answered my brain isnt letting me understand what the twitter pictures mean
Everyone over the age of 18 would receive $2000/month or an equivalent amount with no strings attached. Its not a loan, its just money from the government to use to support yourself. There would be no job requirement and people with disabilities who canât work would also qualify.
Passing the motion wouldnât mean it would happen, but the expectation would be that if it passed, that the Liberal Government would create this program. Motions are non-binding but theyâre often used to convince a sitting government to create a bill that would create the program.
People who make over a certain amount would likely have to pay it back I think, right? Like someone who makes a LOT of money though, not just a regular amount.
Depends on the system, but many have a cutoff like after you make a total of $50-70K, you would no longer qualify or you would only partially qualify and would receive some but much less than someone who was making $10,000 or a disabled person with no income.
This is usually done to keep the costs lower.
