Barbie (2023) // The Good Place (2016-2020)
on the topic of people misreading disco elysium as ‘political satire’ that rips into all of its political branches with equal contempt and leaves very little room for readings that go beyond ‘all of these ideologies are bad and you (the player) are very smart for noticing,’ i think it’s worth noting that the points where it does criticise communism are, to me, very clearly critiques of communism that are coming from communists themselves
like, granted you’ve got the mazov’s socialist sausage grinder jokes (which are, to be clear, funny as hell), and communist harry is hardly held up as an exemplar revolutionary spirit (‘are women bourgeois?’), but things like the impenetrability of the reading group and its apparent disconnect from grassroots struggle + dismissal of anyone who lacks the intellectual capital to engage with them right off the bat is a gesture towards the tensions between abstract theory and praxis that exist in contemporary communist spaces. the line about how complaining about other communists is one of the most important parts of being a communist is more or less an inside joke. compare this to the barefaced contempt that the game holds for moralism:
KINGDOM OF CONSCIENCE – Moralists don’t really *have* beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child’s toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded. Centrism isn’t change – not even incremental change. It is *control*. Over yourself and the world. Exercise it. Look up at the sky, at the dark shapes of Coalition airships hanging there. Ask yourself: is there something sinister in moralism? And then answer: no. God is in his heaven. Everything is normal on Earth.
this isn’t the kind of commentary written by someone who thinks that ‘moralism’ is salvageable, or wants the player to take up the critiques offered by the game and ask what a better ‘moralism’ could look like. you start the game in a world where a communist revolution was put down by an alliance of moralist foreign powers, clearly mirroring the invasions and coups and sanctions that have characterised the capitalist-imperialist responses to communist revolutions in the real world, and that above paragraph is what the game has to say about it. centrism isn’t change, it’s control.
on the other hand, early communist references—the ‘mazovian socioeconomics’ thought, the mission to start ‘building communism’ which suggests that 0.0001% of communism has been built—emphasise communism as failure not as a smug little ‘see! communism doesn’t work!’ centrist chuckle, but to set the groundwork for the revolutionary optimism that characterises the spirit of the communism quest’s closing moments. the inframaterialist tower is able to stand up, if only for a few seconds—the theoretical debates taking place in the communist reading group aren’t useless, even if they are somewhat solipsistic. steban asks you: in dark times, should the stars also go out? if you know about the 2mm hole in the world, steban tells you that communism means to refuse to accept that the world has to remain like this. the student communists are insulated from on-the-ground struggle, but you can convince them to get cindy involved, and see them advertising for a meeting at a local coffee-house rather than their usual password-locked meeting-room. so much of disco elysium is about resisting the inevitability of history—its very imaginary is one of historical materialism. the miracle from the west—ie. the insulindian phasmid—is a disruption of the historical continuum, an essentially communist imaginary.
like, disco elysium isn’t naive about where communism has failed and continues to fail and may well fail again, but of its political branches, communism is the one which the game pins its hopes on. it’s not a ‘satire’ of communism, it’s an assessment and a promise of optimism.
reviewing this again, i’m realizing that even my own understanding of Elysium’s situation had defaulted to defeatism. i had picked up on the clues, wherein kim says he’s fourty-three and would like to see seventy (27 years), apocalypse cop says there are 9,855 days remaining (27 years), the pale is expanding (nominally at a rate correlative to the body of human memory), and shivers says the first shot is fired in 22 years and that it will be the end of revachol. this trail of crumbs is so carefully laid that probably a lot more of us came away from it thinking “Elysium is fucked, so contextualize everything with regard to that”. but @chelonates is thankfully kicking up the dust here on this interpretation. in elysium, there is an arc of history with a predictable end– but the game also subtly suggests that this arc (the nature of the pale is a matter of discussion, but its expansion is not) can maybe– maybe– be disrupted (the tower stood for a moment.). but how? that’s the question its communists are asking. the answer is left open, as it is in our world.
yes 100%! inframaterialism is a key disruptive force - it contravenes the notion that the pale is an absolute, irrefutable fact to which everyone is helplessly subjected, by challenging the idea that reality as it were is a set of metaphysical objectivities unburdened by the pressures of hegemony (just like how historical materialism contravenes the core principles of idealism). if the tower can stand for a few moments, what could a serious overhaul of everything do? (”DU CRISTAL À LA FUMÉE: From crystal to smoke, an expression describing the rigid structures of capitalism turning to smoke under communism.“)
i’m thinking as well about how ‘be vigilant, i love you’ is not an expression of sentiment in the face of annihilation as much as it is shivers delivering a call of action to harry after saying that revachol will be annihilated in a nuclear event in 22 years; shivers emphasises harry’s agency in that moment (i need you, you can keep me on this earth, be vigilant), and ‘love’ in disco elysium is harnessed as a political lever from the appeals to dolores dei’s ‘love for humanity’ designed to obfuscate her violence to ‘true love is possible only in the next world,’ where love as it presently exists is corrupted by moralist hegemony but might still become possible were we to ‘wreak havoc on the middle class,’ as it were. love is a political impetus in disco elysium; shivers articulating a love for harry is an impetus to imagine a ‘love’ that stretches beyond moralist boundaries.
it’s noteworthy, imo, that (whilst soona is of course also crucial when it comes to uncovering key information about the pale) the character who tells us the most about entroponetics + discloses the expansion of the pale and its apocalyptic implications is joyce, the same character who tries to claim that ‘this world is enough’ (a sentiment that the tone of the game wholeheartedly refutes) and the ultraliberal who appears to us as an obscenely wealthy agent of capital. the game is determined to get us to imagine something outside of capital, which means imagining something outside of annihilation.

The staff and performers of Club Q are struggling financially with the club being shut down. Those who weren't working the night of the shooting are not counted as "victims," so don't have access to the same kinds of support but are nonetheless out of a paycheck.
Del Lusional explained here: "Unfortunately the employees and contractors who were not in the building are still being greatly impacted with the loss of income, these last few shows of the month were gonna help pay rent and utilities for many of us."
They are working on getting a joint PayPal set up, but for those of us in the US, here are ways to send money to some of these individuals:

Important update! His story went viral enough that other paint companies reached out to him and he got a job with a new paint company!!
https://www.tiktok.com/@tonesterpaints/video/6898720259675540742
Athens TikToker Tony Piloseno, who’s famous for his paint-mixing videos, revealed Tuesday that he accepted a job at a small Orlando, Florida
Listen. This is what people are talking about when they say that if you gave people a fucking UBI, folks would still work. Even “menial” work is beloved by various people if it’s given the respect it deserves and folks dont need to worry about - um - starving to death and dying of illness?
I legitimately love delivering pizzas! If it were sustainable i wouldn’t mind at all doing it for the rest of my life! One of my best friends absolutely loves cleaning, and the only reason she quit cleaning professionally is that she was sick of the ways she was treated. My stepfather has been a carpenter and construction worker for 30 years, despite being a highly qualified graphic designer and architect, bc the man just fuckin loves construction work. For every “menial/undesireable” job available, there is someone who is happy to work it, if not for the stigma and need to survive. And for the truly awful ones? Like slaughterhouse cleanup, sewer maintenance, roadkill pickup, etc? With UBI they could almost all be mechanized, saving people from having to do grueling and dangerous jobs they really don’t have to do.
There are even people who will do those jobs because they recognize that they need to get done. Those people may not love the job itself but they take great pride in doing something that needs to be done.
People don’t just work for free doing jobs they love. If there’s a niche there will always be someone willing to fill it.
I talk shit but I actually don’t genuinely truly HATE retail, what I hate is how people (customers and employers) use, abuse, overwork, and generally treat the employees like shit
If I could have reasonable hours and accommodations for my limitations and be paid enough to survive without being asked to do 25 jobs advertised as 1 job and had UBI to ensure I could leave if it was too much/I was being mistreated/taken advantage of by employers looking to overwork employees to make more money I’d be totally happy to work retail as long as I physically could
When I worked retail, my favorite part was working in the stock room cuz it’s like playing real life Jenga
Were it not for my disability and if it paid enough and I wasn’t treated like crap I am not kidding I would be happy to work at a movie theater probably for the rest of my life, I loved it that much.
Trust me, for every menial job that “no one would want” there is a person who would LOVE to do it. Forget that “I don’t dream of labor” stuff in a perfect world people would still work because there are people who genuinely enjoy working; It’s being FORCED to do it in shitty conditions for crap pay lest we starve to death or end up unhoused that’s the problem, not work itself.
One of the best jobs I ever had was cemetery landscape maintenance.
It all comes down to this: People don’t mind working. It isn’t work that people dread or are sick of. It’s working conditions.
Pay people well, respect them (and don’t allow customers to disrespect them), accommodate their needs, and people will work their asses off and more often than not do it happily. Work itself is not demeaning or soul-draining. Jobs don’t have to be that way.
Also I think we discount the effect that essentially being coerced into jobs has on how you feel about that job. You can love your job and still kind of hate it BECAUSE you lack the autonomy to set any terms or boundaries around it BECAUSE YOU ARE DEPENDENT ON YOUR JOB TO EAT AND LIVE. Which is coercion.
Remove the coercion = massively change the emotions around the job.
Biggest fucking mood.
They’re also meant for hiltops, not small rooms. Cant get the right reverb with all that echo.
they’re also meant to make you fight the english. don’t forget that part.
My fav bagpipe player was a dude who would go out to the middle of a soccer field near my college apartment on Sunday. No one was using the field and he’d just be out there playing his heart out and the sound were just spread out over the plains. I’d be working on art for class so I’d open the window and listen. I still have fond memories of the day a kid biked up to the edge of the field, ran over to the bagpiper and the music stopped for a moment and as they talked. I couldn’t hear it but I had assumed the worst, that someone had decided to tell him to stop playing. Instead after the pause the musician seemed to nod, readjusted his bagpipes and started belting out the Star Wars theme.
Holyshit that is the most interesting thing I’ve heard in awhile
Holy shit yes
definitely one of the photos of me ever taken

hello everyone look at my favorite thing ever
The hardest part of taking a twitter break is staying away from twitter...
But.i need a breath. Ever since the acquisition it's just ramped up the transphobia. And curiously all the "recommended" posts and "based on your likes" and all that bullshit is always some right winger, fascists or "gender critical" asshole.
it’s p much just crypto bots and transphobia now
