Necromancer that doesnāt know theyāre a necromancer and thinks theyāre just a really good emt
That is the funniest thing i have ever read
the thing was, she wasnāt going to be able to pass the recertification exam, and she couldnāt figure out why. annabelle studied. she practiced. she pulled out every trick and shortcut sheād learned during her two years as an EMT and none of it worked. she just ā she didnāt get it. it made no sense.
āwake up,ā she urged the dummy, pressing her hands to the pulse points on its wrists.Ā ācome on.Ā what the fuck.ā
āyeah, i donāt think that asking nicely is going to do the trick,ā hank said, his eyebrows raised. his helmet, the special one theyād decorated for him with craft supplies from michaelās when heād gotten promoted to firestation chief, sat askew on his head.Ā āi can see now why they didnāt pass you.ā
annabelle rolled her eyes.Ā āitās a psychological thing,ā she said.Ā āitās like, you give the brain an instruction and it follows naturally. and the pulse-point thing always works. i donāt know why itās not, like, in any of the books, but i swear to god itās worked for me every time.ā
it was true that annabelle had the best record on low body counts, which was good because she was the smallest person on the team not counting Georgie, who was a corgi. jake and lillian were always making fun of her for having been the shortest of their whole rookie class. but it hadnāt ever been a problemĀ before; annabelle rarely had to carry anybody out, because she was good enough at getting them on their feet.
but none of that would matter if she couldnāt pass her stupid recertification exam, because theyād take her badge and sheād have to go be, like, a doctor or something.
hank blew out a long breath and sunk down to where she was kneeling on the station floor in full fire gear, giving CPR to the practice dummy, whom they called dierdre. there was a little light that went on when youād saved its life. it had been a dull gray for an hour now.
ālook, AB. i know youāre a good firefighter, and i know you know how to deliver CPR. just do it like you do it during an emergency. youāre overthinking it.ā
ābut this isĀ what i do during an emergency!ā annabelle cried, throwing her hands up.Ā āi put my hands on their pulse points and i use psychological mumbo-jumbo and they just get up and walk!āĀ
hank blinked.Ā āā¦really,ā he said, voice flat.Ā āpeople whoāve been inhaling smoke for half an hour just ⦠get up and walk.ā
āthe brain is an incredibly powerful organ,ā said annabelle, shrugging.Ā ālook man, i donāt know, okay? but it works. i havenāt had to actually do CPR in like a year and a half.ā
he gave her a long, quiet look and said,Ā āwellā¦.huh,ā before pushing himself back up onto his feet and frowning off into the distance.Ā ākeep practicing,ā he said after a minute, and left her there.
-
hank switched her team.
āwhat the fuck, man,ā she said, sliding into the truck next to him as the sirens went on.Ā āi canāt get CPR on one fucking dummy and suddenly you donāt trust me to do my job without supervision?ā
carl and bethany very carefully did not meet her eyes in the rearview from the backseat. bethany pulled a magazine from beneath the seat and said loudly,Ā ālook, carl, jennifer aniston and brad pitt are getting back together.ā
āthank christ,ā said carl.Ā āiāve been really worried about jen.ā
hank gave annabelle the flat look that had gotten him promoted to firestation chief in the first place, the one that said iām your dad and you donāt want to disappoint me.Ā as always, annabelle wilted underneath it, sliding down in her seat and crossing her arms over her chest. it was a difficult feat in full gear but she wanted him to know she was feeling sullen.
āi trust you completely,ā hank told her, his voice a light scold.Ā āi want to see you in action so i can help you figure out whatās going wrong with the dummies. sometimes itās hard for the brain to accurately remember everything that happens during a crisis.ā
annabelle rolled her eyes.Ā āi told you,ā she said.Ā āitās just ā itās the same thing every time, Iām not like, blacking out.ā
āgreat, then iām about to learn a cool new trick,ā hank said serenely, and pulled the truck out of the lot. annabelle kept her gaze focused out of the window, watching the city pass as carl and bethany talked loudly about which celebrities were dating which other celebrities and who wore what better. she tried to swallow down the nerves that tightened her throat. maybe the dummy was right. maybe she wasĀ doing something else and didnāt remember it. maybe the last two years had been a fluke and she had no business being a firefighter. maybe she was about to get fired.
there wasnāt a fire, though the alarm was going off. instead they found a bag of smoking popcorn and the collapsed heap of a forty-five year old bachelor type, down to just his boxers and a pair of slippers with llamas on them. he had no pulse.Ā
hank held carl and bethany back, directing them to deal with the smoke from the popcorn; annabelle he pointed toward the resident with a jerk of his chin.Ā
she sighed, kneeling by his side. she pressed her hands flat to his heart and then dragged them across his chest and down each arm, to his wrists. with her thumbs on his pulse point, she hissed,Ā āletās go, man. up and at āem. youāre not meant to die in your underwear while cooking popcorn, come on.ā
she held her breath for a few moments, conscious of hankās eyes on her, and let out a long sigh of relief when she felt his pulse jump beneath her, watched his eyes flicker.Ā āwhat the fuck?ā he asked, voice a croak.Ā āwhat happened?ā
āyou gotta eat more vegetables, bud,ā annabelle told him, and looped his arm over her shoulders to help him get to his feet. she was so relieved she could have wept, but instead met hankās eyes with a challenging glare. see?Ā she thought. i told you.Ā āletās get you to the ambulance.ā
-
āthe bad news is that you have a lot of practicing to do if you want to pass your recert,ā hank said without preamble, showing up at her apartment. she didnāt think sheād ever seen him in jeans before. it was weird.Ā āthe good news is i understand your problem now.ā
annabelle stepped aside, beckoning him in.Ā āwhat problem?ā she demanded.Ā āit worked! you saw it work. thatās the opposite of a problem.ā
hank shrugged. he handed her a trifold that heād clearly printed off at home. it said so you think youāre a necromancer. annabelle blinked down at it, and then up at hank, and then down at the trifold again.Ā āi ⦠donāt understand whatās happening here,ā she told him honestly.Ā
āiām not in the community and theyāre kind of cagey, so i canāt really tell you a lot,ā hank told her, stilted and visibly uncomfortable.Ā ābut i have a cousin who is, and um, i just want you to know that this doesnāt change anything. youāre still who youāve always been and you have my complete support. weāll figure out how to get around the recert. maybe iāll ā i can put you on admin duty to give you time to study. weāll say itās because of an injury.ā
āhank,ā annabelle said, with some urgency.Ā āhank, this flier says the word necromancer.ā
āyes,ā agreed hank, looking relieved.Ā āoh, good, youāve heard of it already. i thought i was going to have to have the whole your body is changingĀ talk.ā
annabelle shook her head.Ā āno, i ā hank. you know that ⦠um, you know that necromancy isnāt real, right? people canāt bring other people back from the dead. thatās crazy.ā
āannabelle, not four hours ago you instructed a dead man to stand up and he did.ā
āokay, he wasnāt dead, obviously. he was almostĀ dead, at best.ā
āno. he was dead.ā
āi felt his pulse! it was very faint!ā
āyou calledĀ his pulse. no one else would have felt it, because it wasnāt there except in response to you.ā
āhank, what the fuck.ā
he shrugged.Ā āread the flier,ā he instructed.Ā āand bring dierdre home with you. youāre going to have to practice a lot if you want to get recertified, considering you havenāt one time had to use any of the skills you learned the first go around.ā
he bussed her temple as he went by, letting himself out of her apartment with a friendly wave. annabelle looked down at the flier in her hand with a frown. when she unfolded it, the first page said, everyoneās necromancy journey is different, but most people discover their gift by accident. have you ever brought a pet back to life? touched an elderly relatives hand and seen some of the color flood back into their face? or perhaps, more subtly, been able to keep cut flowers alive long past their purchase date?
annabelle looked at her kitchen table. sheād had the same vase of tulips on it since she moved in, three years ago. it was true they periodically started to wilt, but she usually just changed their water and they were fine, popping back up one after the other as she slid them into the fresh vase.Ā
āwell shit,ā annabelle said, letting the flier fall from her hands.

Suddenly struck with a need to explain to you how boat pronouns work (I work in the marine industry).
When you're talking about the design of the boat, you say "it".
When the boat is still being built, your say "it".
When the boat is nearing completion, you can say "it" or "she".
When the boat is floating in the water you probably say "she", unless there is still a lot of work to be done (e.g. no engine yet) then you say "it".
When the boat is officially launched and operating, you say "she". If you continue to say "it" at this point you are not incorrect but suspiciously untraditional. You are not playing the game.
If you are referring to a boat you don't really know anything about you may say "it" ("there's a big boat, it's coming this way"). But if you know its name, it's probably "she" ("there's the Waverley, she's on her way to Greenock").
If you are talking about boats in general, you say "it" ("when a boat is hit by a wave it heels over")
If you speak about a boat in complimentary terms, it's "she" ("she's a grand boat"). If you are being disparaging it may be it, but not necessarily ("it's as ugly as sin", "she's a grotty old tub").
If she has a boy's name, she's still she. "Boy James", "King Edward", "Sir David Attenborough"? The pronoun is she.
If it's a dumb barge (no engine), you say it. But if it's a rowing boat (no engine), you say she.
I hope this has cleared things up so that you may not be in danger of misgendering floating objects.
Hit "view post" and lost it
Yeah man, this wizard sleepover is cozy. I just saw a guy gently clap his hands together and say "hot beverage conjuration" or something, and suddenly everyone was holding a perfect mug of their favorite warm drink in their hands. Nobody who was already sleeping even woke up, that's how cozy it is. I'm over here casting pillow and level 2 pyjamas. I think I just heard "power word: blanket fort" two groups over. I gotta get in there.
this is from "research as a leisure activity" by celine nguyen, publs. on stubstack in 2024. it's a very good read
I met someone when I was pretty young who had received a generous inheritance -- not enough to live a life of luxury, but enough to live on comfortably without working. He had chosen to simply keep going to school his whole life. He did get degrees, but he didn't use them for anything other than pleasure -- he had a Ph.D but also two Master's degrees, three BAs, and was currently serving an apprenticeship in blacksmithing while considering trying out some trade schools next. I thought, if I had the money I'd do that too, and then thought about how I still could learn all the time, it would just have to be a hobby instead of the career he'd made of it. It definitely changed the way I saw both education and leisure.
TIL a family in Georgia claimed to have passed down a song in an unknown language from the time of their enslavement; scientists identified the song as a genuine West African funeral song in the Mende language that had survived multiple transmissions from mother to daughter over multiple centuries (x)
In 1997 Ameliaās daughter, Mary Moran, and other members of the Moran family were invited to Sierra Leone, West Africa, where they were welcomed in Freetown by Sierra Leoneās President and then flown by helicopter to the countryās interior. Ā There, in the small village of Senehun Ngola, Mary and Bendu Jabati met and sang this song together for the first time. Ā Years earlier, Benduās grandmother had told her that this song, which had been passed down in her village from mother to daughter for centuries, would one day reunite her to long-lost relatives.
In addition to finding out where in Africa her ancestors were abducted into slavery, Mary Moran discovered the meaning of the Mende song: a processional hymn for the final farewell to the spirit, it was sung in Senehun Ngola by women as they prepared the body of a loved one for burial.
(The OP's link leads to a site with a recording of the song sung by both Mary Moran and her mother, Amelia)
Something I think ppl who aren't used to it struggle with when it comes to ancient history is that frequently 'we do not and cannot know this' is the only truthful response a historian can give. People severely overestimate how much we actually know about Ancient Rome.
I remember talking to someone at a party once about the debate over Septimius Severus's ethnicity (whole other can of worms) and they asked if genetic testing of his remains was not a way to settle it and I was like oh. Oh okay you are under the impression we have the physical remains of Roman emperors from the second century AD alright then. (We. Do not.)
Can't stress how much of high level study of Ancient History is devoted to trying to make sense of what actually factually happened. When I was at university (10+ years ago now) the discipline was embroiled in the lengthy and ongoing process of trying to unpack not just the biases in ancient sources but the centuries & centuries of biases within the field itself. I don't imagine this process is ever going to Stop. It's not uncommon for historical accounts to be so garbled & contradictory that it's not possible to reconstruct the real events behind them.
Once in an introductory lecture one of my professors was talking about this problem and articulated it very simply as 'we know real things happened between real people, but we aren't sure what they were'. Sums it up really!!
"All the information we have about the historical event known as That Time Barbarians Kicked My Cat is the chronicle of Cattus of Catalia, titled Regarding That Time Those Fucking Barbarians Kicked My Cat. It's possible a cat was kicked by barbarians but we are not sure about the details. It might be no cat was kicked at all. Let's say a cat kicking did occur but let's remember we cannot be sure"
We also know that the kicker was sentenced to One Thousand Years of jail, at least according to the cat's testimony (or possibly later writings attributed to the cat)

(nods sagely) (nods basily) (nods rosemarily) (nods saltly) (nods star anisely)
@21st-century-minutiae
"Nods sagely" is a common phrase, referring to someone who is offering acknowledgement akin to a wise elder ("a sage"). This phrase is often used ironically, such as describing a kid acting as though they have some great wisdom over some childish matter, but it is also used unironically.
"Sage" is an adjective meaning "wise", from which the noun ("sage" as a person) and the adverb ("sagely") arose, from the Latin "sapere", meaning "to be wise" or "to have good taste" via French "sage."
"Sage" is also a noun referring to a shrubby aromatic herb. This homonym comes from the Latin "salvus" meaning "healthy", via the French "sauge". The herb was thought to promote good health and good teeth.
The above joke is playing with the homonym. Sage, Basil, Rosemary, Salt, and Star Anise are all seasonings. Sage, basil, and rosemary are all herbs (favor taken from the leaves of plants), while salt is a mineral, and star anise is a spice (flavor taken from other parts of a plant, such as the seeds in this case). They are all commonly known flavors in the early twenty-fist century.
The joke comes from the initial impression that the word "sagely" is in reference to wisdom. It becomes quickly apparent that the writer is describing seasonings instead, leading one to wonder how a person could nod in a manner suggesting an herb or spice. "Basily" and "Rosemarily" and so on are not official English words, but they would easily be parsed as adverbs meaning "doing an action in such a way as to evoke the (flavor of the) seasoning."
Going to make a bold claim that the push for IMAX to be the āintended viewingā of certain films contributes to cinemas dying.
Another unrelated take - if you rebrand British food as āTavern foodā everyone suddenly loves it.
And criticism of food like beans on toast is just classism.
No it's not. Poor people food rules everywhere else. The British have no excuse.
Beans on toast isnāt bad, it might not be everyoneās first choice but itās not remotely close to being bad meal.
Thereās a lot to criticise about Britain/UK but I really donāt think working class meals are one of them. Theyāre made with the resources available and beans on toast became popular in the 1940s.
āI Hate All Religions Equallyā
I see this comment fairly often. And probably somewhere around 99 times out of 100, the person saying it is a Culturally Christian Atheist who is trying to say that they view the Christian concepts of ābelief in a higher powerā and āfaith in and submission to a specific deityā as abhorrentā¦
But what is actually communicated to non-Christians includes:
āI think that all other religions are just reskinned versions of Christianity with a different name plate on the Christ Figure.ā
And:
āI hate your culture for no other reasons than displaced trauma and lack of education on my part.ā
And Iāve recently been seeing this comment repeatedly on my āMissionaries Are Inherently Xenophobicā post, and basically just auto-blocking the people making the statement.
Because itās so ignorant. It ties into the Christian worldview that āCultureā and āReligionā are two distinct things that are almost modular, in that you can swap out the āReligionā module with any other and have no effects on the Culture. (9 times out of 10, these types also insist that Culturally Christian holidays are also secularā¦)
So, sure. Letās take this statement and run with it, just to demonstrate what it actually says to those of us who arenāt Christian.
~~~
I hate all religions equally.
So, yes, I do hate Judaism just as much as I hate Christianity. Nevermind that means Iām in ideological agreement with Nazis, I hate this ethnoreligion which has never done me personal harm, and has been persecuted for thousands of years. To me, Judaism is Just A Religion, and I donāt understand, and donāt WANT to understand that it is also a persecuted minority whose culture gets routinely outlawed by people like me. Since I donāt understand that, seeing a visibly Jewish person on the street with their modest garb and hearing their foreign language, I am revolted. I hate Judaism, and I hate JEWS, just as much as I hate every other religion, equally.
So, yes, I hate Sikhism just as much as I hate Christianity. Nevermind that Iāve almost certainly never met a Sikh, and I donāt know that they donāt seek converts, so theyāre also an ethnic group, the mere fact that they have a Religion that comes with that ethnic group means that I hate them. Their religious beliefs with which theyāre raised as part of their cultureāhonesty, equality, fidelity, standing up to oppressionāare Evil because itās a religion, and need to be wiped out. Seeing a Sikh man, with his Religious turban and beard, as they give out free food to everyone in need at a Langar⦠well, it fills me with disgust and rage, and I wish to rid the world of this Religious Practice, observed by people who are different than me. I hate Sikhism and I hate Sikhs, just as much as I hate every other religion, equally.
So, yes, I hate Shintoism just as much as I hate Christianity. Nevermind that my understanding of Shintoism is almost certainly bastardized by my Western conceptions, their beliefs in venerating nature and respecting their ancestors are Religious and therefore Evil, and need to be wiped out. Seeing a Shintoist leave an offering to the Kami, engaging in ritual cleanliness, and marking major life events with solemnity fills me with disgust and rage. I hate Shintoism and I hate Shintoists, just as much as I hate every other religion, equally.
So, yes, I hate the Druze faith just as much as I hate Christianity. Nevermind that they are a small ethnic group who are prohibited from proselytism from their founding; I donāt care. To me, theyāre Just Another Abrahamic Religion and I Hate Abrahamic Religions, even if there are so few of them. They have a Religion, and I Hate All Religions Equally.
So, yes, I hate the many and myriad beliefs of the First Nations, just as much as I hate Christianity. Nevermind that they were persecuted and marginalized by Christianity, which tried to wipe out their beliefs, way of life, and identities, I hate their Religions, even if those religions are tied to their ways of life. Nevermind that the residential schools, which had the stated goal of āKill the Indian in the Child,ā have mass graves of children. I refuse to recognize that this puts me in ideological agreement with Christian missionaries. After all, I Hate All Religions Equally, and if mass graves of children is the price to pay for a world with one fewer Religion in it, then so be it.
After all, I Hate All Religions Equally.
Quick clarifying note: I was reading the comments after I posted this and someone pointed out that it is slightly suspicious that the OP seems to have gone out of their way to not mention persecution of Muslims and Islamophobia. I am choosing to believe that this omission is just a complete coincidence and not intentional.ļæ¼
Update: Iāve checked OPās profile/page, and Iām not so sure that that omission was a coincidence.ļæ¼
Iām pretty sure it is just a coincidence. OP is Jewish and therefore, naturally, talks a lot about antisemitism, but if you search their blog, they do also talk about Islamophobia.
Iām curious where you got the impression they left Islam out intentionally?
Well, it wasnāt anything particularly specific but, goodness knows on this site you kind of just need to go on hunches. Like, there is one mutual that I have who loves Harry Potter and I was very suspicious that they might be supporting JKRās transphobia so I checked in to their blog every once in a while to find out if they were transphobic because if they were, I didnāt want them to follow me. ļæ¼ I didnāt have much concrete stuff to go on, maybe grasping at straws, sure, but itās sometimes tricky on this site to find out whether you are supporting people that would also support you. Goodness knows, as a gay Muslim I have enough trouble with that.
This post ignoring one of the largest religions in the world and talking about far less well-known religions instead, coupled with a meme from earlier down in their blog of a person trying to shove a mattress into a sedan and the caption was āanti-Zionist trying to insert Israel into an unrelated conversation.ā [btw: lol, true!] The two things together made me feel like maybe they viewed Muslims as an antagonist. like, maybe the omission was intentional. Nothing big but in case it was one of the many things that was obvious to everyone but me, I wanted to add an update to it but if this was an obvious thing to everyone else that I had my suspicions. Iām glad to know that I was wrong.
Iām just going to copy and paste the exact thing I said when someone else asked the se thing (that didnāt include the insinuation that Iām Islamophobic just because Iām Jewish), which can easily be found in the notes of this post:
I considered [doing a segment on Islam], but Islamophobia from New Atheism/Christian anti-theist-types is a feature, not a bug, starting with how they view Christian culture as normative, which includes ātraditionalā Islamophobia (Richard Dawkins being perhaps the premier example). As such, theyāre used to defending against (accurate) accusations of Islamophobia (some of them will even cheerfully own up to it), and I thought that I would take a different approach and pick smaller, non-proselytizing religions to make the point.
So, since you are so suspicious as to police others by what they donāt say, I would advise that you start with your own latent antisemitism.
I meanā¦. the post also doesnāt mention Buddhism, which is also one of the largest religions in the world. Or Hindusim.Ā
Rather, using religions that are increasingly unknown to Westerners is the point. Itās emphasizing how absurd the statement is in the first place. Not only are these Nu Atheists judging the religions they think they know - Christianity, Islam, Judaism - but also ones theyāve never heard of, like the Druze, Bahai, andĀ Zorastrionism.Ā
I cannot think of an example off the top of my head, but I am certain there are retellings of the Odyssey that do exactly that
The Odyssey, based in Mississippi during the Great Depression.
Clooney won a golden globe for best actor, the original soundtrack won a fuck ton of awards, and it had two Oscar nominations.
The last week has been so ridiculous even the satirists canāt take it any more
the fucking timestamp
Happy tenth birthday to this post which will apparently haunt my notifications for all eternity.
Itās about Brexit, by the way. The timestamp is a week post-referendum. Newsthump is UK-based and I myself am scottish. And yes, things have 100% got worse since then, but personally I regard the referendum as the point at which we entered the Clownshoes Timeline.
