I've decided not to share links due to not wanting to be perceived in full on tumblr but I have officially had two short stories published in 10 months' time and that feels pretty neat! The flaw in this situation though is if I want this neatness to continue I have to write more short fiction.

Now that I've finished Half Man I've decided my favorite thing is how they truly got Ruben to embody a rabid wolf, not like the cliche that could have been - so some growling, yeah, but more huffing and snorting and snuffling and drooling and pacing and, eventually, biting. Moments of raw perplexity within the inchoate rage! And some other things. It felt animalistic, not actorly, and also made it easier to watch the entirety of that last jail scene from behind my clenched fingers because oh my god Niall you fucking idiot oh my god the tension but if I just listen to Ruben frothing at the mouth with my eyes closed horror-movie-style I can follow the plot without having an aneurysm

i do enjoy that we got to see how genuinely awful niall is in this episode. he is told that mona is more emotionally vulnerable and revealing when she drinks so he takes her out for drinks and takes advantage of that. he takes money from his girlfriend's dad and lies to her about it and then becomes a deadbeat because he sent HIMSELF to conversion therapy and it didn't work. he has sex with mona on ruben's kitchen floor and does not pull out. he pisses ruben off constantly and reels him back in after (or does his best to) and he lies to mona about how ruben found out he knew about ruben's infertility because he doesn't want to be held accountable for it even though he was the one that prompted that discussion in the first place. he is evil. just an evil evil guy. i love it

#the narrative is like either pay ruben back or through a series of escalating insanities an innocent man is going to get his brains smashed #and niall is SO OFFENDED he's like excuse me I can't RUSH my writerly MUSE #also the snippet of his book we heard was not like. spectacular.#which makes it funnier #I'm willing to accept there are some books out there for which allowing your unstable violent misogynist stepbrother/love interest/????#to rampage through Glasgow is worth it. you know for the sake of art #but Niall's book sounds aggressively average #also nothing was stopping him from getting a side job at McDonald's but instead he becomes ruben's maid? sure #half man #spoilers #it's so fascinating to me how he instigates and seems shocked at the consequences when he simply cannot be shocked #he knows he's setting a rabid dog loose! every time he knows it! just like ruben knows full well who he was smelling on that bathrobe #something about denial and something about niall getting to feel powerful while keeping his hands clean - getting to affect the world #both abuse victims and both aggressors...the cyclical nature of it #what a show. deeply unpleasant viewing experience will rewatch 900 times
