vegans make peace with honey
no shut up do it
vegans will pretend not to hear when natives tell them their agave products are unsustainable because they have whimsical feelings about, and i cannot stress this enough, the freedom of hive insects
Prove it.
I have not seen any evidence tonsugges they are harmed or die in the process of production. They do regurgitate the nectar as part of the process to concentrate it into honey (an interesting process) but they do not suffer any injury during this process. If they did, the cost to produce honey, which is done naturally as a measure to survive over winter and through times of lower availability, would outweigh the benefits. If you kill several bees to produce enough honey to make one more bee, It makes no sense. Any animal that did that would die, even with human intervention.
Do you have any sources which suggest otherwise? I’d be interested to hear of this (relatively publicly available) information was false or misunderstood.
Bee farmers use whats called a honey maker. It’s a crude devices. It similar to a meat grinder. They force the bees in and grind them up. What comes out is a paste. That paste is later filtered into what we know as honey
This is the funniest thing I’ve ever read
@zoologicallyobsessed please show us pics of your bee grinder
they might be falsely thinking about a honey extractor machine. but all these do is you place the beehive frames inside and a motor rotates it at a speed that removes the honey, which is then tapped through a tap at the bottom.
…do they think they put bees in that and spin them around until they vomit…?
bee carnival
bad and naughty bees get put into the b e e c e n t r i f u g e to extract their honey
Vegans coming after beekeepers is one of my major teeth grinding annoyances. For many reasons, because there’s so many lies. And to go one step further because it’s such a waste. You see, the strongest vegan argument is that they don’t want to exploit animals or take from them without their consent.
… but… Bees consent. NO. I’M NOT KIDDING.
How? Bee hives aren’t kept on leashes. They’re outside, the bees can travel miles every day. They follow their queen. Who is also outside, not on a leash, and can travel miles every day. If she doesn’t like the hive for any reason - for example: it got too hot, too cold, too messy, too filled with sugary stuff and they need more space… then the queen leaves. And with her the hive.
The queen stays in the hive because the hive is the best place to live. Period. Done. End of. If the hive is staying with the beekeeper it’s because the keeper is doing their job correctly and keeping them happy because the bees can, and do, leave bad beekeepers.
Of all the animals we have domesticated as livestock, bees are the ones you can most easily argue are consenting participants in their keeping.
Here it is. The bee post is back
I feel compelled to explain the misconception part for anyone who doesn’t know anything about beekeeping and finds any of this confusing. This might be a little redundant, but I’m scratching an itch.
Harvesting honey does not murder bees.
The device pictured above does not mash up bees or their hives.
There’s no ethical concern when it comes to eating honey, it’s totally ethical as food is concerned.
Bees manufacture honey using pollen. They store it in the cells of their hive, where it’s used as food for the colony, particularly the larvae growing into the next generation of bees.
When you harvest honey, you remove parts of the hive that are being used to store the honey, without taking any bees along for the ride. Those parts of the hive are then put into a device, like the centrifugal extractor shown above by gemstone-gynoid, where the parts are spun really fast to pull extract the honey. The honey gets collected on the walls of the extractor, drips down, and can then be filtered and bottled for human use.
So.
It turns out that bees love making honey and can make more of it than they’d ever need. It also turns out that beekeepers taking care of hives and harvesting their honey keeps bees healthy and thriving, more so than they’d normally accomplish on their own. And we really need bees healthy and thriving because they help us grow an astonishing amount of food by pollinating plants.
Like, there’s no need to have a conversation about this, anyone who claims that harvesting honey requires that you kill bees is lying. Either they don’t know anything about beekeeping and are just repeating a lie someone else told them, or they know that they’re lying and they’re just straight up trying to deceive people. Neither is a good look.
And just one more point of clarification – “cells of the hive” doesn’t mean the anatomical cells of the bees’ bodies, it means the little holes in the honeycomb of the physical structure of the hives, which they build using beeswax. Think of it like a bee pantry. They put their honey in the pantry, but since they’re working hard every day, they often make wayyyyyy too much of it. So the beekeepers come along and take the extra honeycomb that the bees don’t need and aren’t going to use, but they leave plenty behind for the bees to eat. Additionally, if anything happens to the hive’s honey supplies in the winter, the beekeepers can supplement their food by either giving some honey back or giving them sugar water. Also, fun fact! When beekeepers extract the honey from the comb, they often leave all their equipment out afterwards so the bees can come along and clean up, re-collecting any traces of honey or wax left behind, which get put back into the hive and recycled. Any leftover waste (dirt and grime from old comb, for example, or bees that died natural deaths of old age) makes great fertilizer for the plants that produce the pollen the bees make next year. No waste!
Vegans, the bees are not going to stop making honey if they’re left to their own devices in the wild. The bees are just doing a thing that bees do. Eating honey is not exploitation, it’s sustainability. That said, if you’re still worried about the ethics, I’d recommend looking up some local beekeepers/honey farms in your area and reaching out to them for more education! I’ve known a lot of beekeepers that are really excited about doing education and outreach to teach people about the importance of pollinators, the partnership between bees and beekeepers, and the process of how honey is collected. Some honey farms will even give you a tour of their process so you can see in person how it’s made and that it’s not a harmful or exploitative process for the bees at all! (and of course eating local honey gives you an amazing connection to your local environment, both spiritually and physically?? like apparently eating local honey can help with seasonal allergies??? it’s really cool)

#the drawing including kids in the bus windows going like :O kills me
Not to add onto what is in my opinion already a perfect post. BUT I feel this is an opportunity for story time. You see back when I was 19 I got roped into driving a school bus as a job for a few years. My reasoning? In customer service if someone yells at me I can only nod and smile with kids I might actually have fewer people screaming at me. (This proved mostly true.) During my time I had a few INCIDENTS that were noteworthy and I feel those kids now grown up probably tell stories about the insane crap that happened to us. Luckily I never hit a parked car. I never hit anything in fact but I came DAMN close thanks to things out of my control. THE GOOSE- I’m coming down a hill. All my middle school aged kids on board. I might be going a little fast thanks to something called gravity. The road was sloping down into a busy city center with a lot of fancy ponds. A Canada goose takes off from said pond and decides my 35 foot long bright yellow steel tube is a dragon and its gonna fight it. Its flying low and aims RIGHT for my window. Right for ME. Its morning. Kids are half asleep. I let out a curse. Swerve and barely miss having a new giant dangerous honking hood ornament. Should I have swerved? Probably not. But its not every day that a 15lb dinosaur decides to take on a ground plane. Of course everyone is startled. When they start asking what in the world happened all i can get out is “GOOSE!” The BEES- Same batch of kids, this time early summer, this time on their way home. I’m heading down an on ramp where they recently did some construction work. All the windows are down because its just unseasonably hot and I’m not going to torture them or myself. I see a haze up ahead. I don’t know how my brain managed to process what I was seeing so fast but I did. Next thing I know I’m shouting “GUYS PUT ALL THE WINDOWS UP NOW!!” when they don’t stir right away I punctuate it with a point forward and “BEEES!!!” They all fly to their feet and start slamming up the windows and we manage to get everything up in time before we plunge into a swarm of angry yellowjackets. Why didn’t I stop? One does not simply break on an interstate on ramp in a major metropolitan area during rush hour unless you want to cause a 30 care pile up. We managed to not get a single bee in the bus.
Well thats a lot of water- Again these poor middle school guys. Its fall. Its morning. We had a lot of heavy rain over the weekend. Part of my route after picking up in their neighborhood took me past a little park that ran along a creek. I come down the hill and find the road covered in water. I stop. Several of the kids come up front to look at the road with me. “Can we clear that?” One asks me. Im biting my lip looking over the height of the street signs gauging how deep the water is. Ive been on this road a hundred times. I can tell its about 2 feet deep. It will just touch the belly of the bus. Now before I tell the next part some other info- I had no way to know the road condition there. I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT turn around. The road is narrow, curved, and steep. Its lined with trees, signs, street lights. I could MAYBE turn around with one of the kids flagging but we CANNOT let them off anywhere but school or home PERIOD. Its not raining anymore so the water isn’t suddenly going to go higher. (this isn’t an area known for flash floods either) I also know how basic mechanics work. If I do this I HAVE to keep gas on or the water will flood the exhaust and kill it in the water. I also run the risk of floating if my drive wheels lift off the ground, again stalling us. And with the magical combination of a 19 year old with a cdl and a bus load of people who can work on my peer pressure I decide to go for it. “Everyone move up to the front of the bus I need as much weight as possible up here on the drive wheels” Everyone grabs their bags and piles into the front seats hooting in excitement. Fortune Favors the Bold I say and gas it. Its ramming speed. All 30,000 lbs of us spear into the water like a missile. I send up 20 foot tall rooster tails. Oh crap its higher then I thought. I’m committed I cannot stop now. I can feel the the rear trying to float. I’m practically standing on the gas to try and chug through the water. The stairwell fills with swirling water while the kids begin to scream in amazement. Halfway there. Still running. Engine working. I blast out the other side, steam pouring off the exhaust manifolds and engine, ride the breaks for 100 feet to dry them off and then park it to catch my breath. The kids are absolutely LOSING THEIR MINDS. There are cheers, high fives, I get hugged over the shoulders a dozen times. I’m just grateful it worked. Should I have done that? No. Absolutely not. In hindsight I should have called to base and had them advise. We made it thank god. Do those guys have crazy stories about their just out of high school bus driver? I’m certain.

Holy…. you know what… this last image is probably the only image that has ever been able to convince me this brain hack was a real thing and we didn’t all just roar onto the battlefield because half of us had been hideously duped… we were all duped. By our own brains.

PLOT-TWIST!
Facts about your body after you turn 25, AKA things I wish someone had told me:
you will get hair in fun new places. this is normal and fine.
these places include (but are not limited to) if you don't already have them: your asscrack, your back, your ears, and moles. it's fine.
some of you, dick or not, will also lose hair. this is normal, but also if you have ovaries maybe get this checked out for PCOS.
your acne will probably change. some people get better. some people get worse. it's fine.
your nails will probably get an infection or a fungus at least once in your life. this is fine. (but also let your doc know).
how you gain and lose fat and where you do so will change. this is fine.
how you smell will change. this is fine. (fishy or rotten smells mean doctor time though)
if you have a prostate: it gets harder to pee. prostates enlarge as you age (get this checked regularly). this is fine.
if you do not have a prostate: it gets easier to pee but not in a good way. as in as you get older, your pelvic floor muscles tend to lose some of their strength. this makes it harder to keep pee in. this is fine.
all breasts and pectorals eventually sag, with the rest of your body. this is fine.
a decent percent of the population will experience a cyst at least once. some of you will make up for the rest with multiple. this is fine, but keep them checked out by a doctor. (sometimes this is a condition! get checked for that too!)
almost half of everyone gets hemorrhoids. it's a good idea to just expect them since your chances of getting them get higher the older you are. your toilet will look like a murder scene. definitely get your booty checked out BUT this is almost always perfectly normal. just eat more fiber. "but I already-" eat more fiber. and maybe suck it up and buy some hemorrhoid cream, you'll thank me later.
yes, this means you will probably need to make an appointment for a doctor to see your butthole. it's okay. not only do they really not care but 1. they've seen weirder that day and 2. they'd far rather you see them now than later when it's been going on for forty years and now it might be colon cancer. it's okay. consider it a rite of passage.
adults need more sleep than children. don't believe the myth that you need less than they do. that is capitalist propaganda to make you give up more of your life to the work grind, comrade.
vitamins and medicine, something you are more likely to take as you get older, sometimes make the toilet turn weird colors. it's okay.
if you still have your tonsils and get those little stones and get sore throats more than once a year you should plan on getting those suckers out before the tonsils cause an infection and go septic. if you're getting stones at all you should get those reevaluated every year, especially if the stones are bigger than a needlehead (or get bigger over time). it's gross and yucky. I don't care. get them looked at before you end up in the hospital.
you'll probably need to add foot support to your shoes if you don't already do. this is fine.
your body changes. sometimes it can feel sorta weird and upsetting that it isn't what it used to be. that is okay, and it is okay to be upset. just know that this is normal, it's normal to be upset or not upset, but don't let it hinder your quality of life. trans or cis, there is a certain level of acceptance you just gotta give your body and forgive your body for as you get older. it's okay.
it's okay. I promise.
I'd like to add something that has to do with sleep:
How much sleep you get WILL absolutely affect your body.
After turning 26, my sleep has been horrendous. And I found that my body fucks up EVERYTHING if I don't get enough sleep. This shit used to not affect me. But shit boy how dooty, I have a myriad of things that has come due to me not sleeping enough. Things that I didn't know were because of my lack of sleep
This includes: constipation, lack of hunger, uneven body temperatures and inability to naturally adapt to temperatures, dizziness that doesn't stop even when laying down.
And things that I knew were because of my lack of sleep were my depression worsening and my lack of focus
Get a solid sleep schedule!
Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley and Robert Louis Stevenson reading like that Edgar Allan Poe meme
They are reading my fanfictions
If you grow a forest in your pain, it will forever lie in rotten leaves. The rain will turn sour as the ashen earth snaps its teeth, and the roots of the tallest trees will shrink from the salt in which they are set. Find your shovel amongst the weeds and dig once more– dig through clay and stone and pain until you are at the seed that started it all– and give it love. Give it kindness. Plant it in soft soil and forgive its false springs and withered stalks; it grows in new earth now. Someday its branches will kiss the clouds and taste sweet summer rain; for now, you do not need a forest. You only need time.

shit man tomorrow is christmas eve i swear yesterday was June 2010
As is tradition in tumblr culture the locals unearth the corpse of a long deceased figure and drag it across the streets merrily, laughing at what is preserved of the person’s words. This custom, seen as morbid in other cultures, is instead done gleefully and with an unmatched enthusiasm
Won’t lie, if I were having a rough time and the office himbos brought me mac and cheese I would be cured.
Small, clumsy kindnesses, earnestly given, are more healing than you would believe. More adults should be willing to show the tender caring that a little kid expresses when they say, “You looked sad, so I brought you a rock.”
