Not my original idea, but Iâve had this brain worm wriggling in my head for days and I need to get it out.
An AU where reader has magic healing hands. The one drawback is: for everything you heal, you yourself take on the bodily damage and have to take time to recover. Self inflicted damage and recovery time is dependent upon how severe the subjects injury is. (Doesnât have to be a 1:1 injury transfer, was thinking more along the lines of temporary body deterioration due to the amount of energy it takes for you to heal someone.)
One can only imagine how you handle serving alongside the TF141: the most injury prone group of men out there. From broken bones to burn wounds to shrapnel tearing through flesh- youâre there with your healing hands to patch them back up better than new.
The boys take good care of you too, of course- they practically owe their lives to the person who takes their pain and willingly endures it themselves. They take turns watching over you when you need time to recover. Late nights of sitting in one or the others lap as they cradle you close against their warm chest in whatever filthy, freezing safe house youâve landed in - hand feeding you water and rations when youâre too weak and pained to move.
Then, on a mission gone wrong, Soap goes and gets himself shot in the head.
It was fast, so quick it almost didnât seem real. Not until Soap slumped inertly onto the concrete under him. Until you caught sight of the pool of scarlet around his head and the acrid tang of copper hit your nose. Until you dropped to your knees on the ground beside him, the warm viscous liquid splattering against your tactical gear, soaking into the fabric of your pants, staining the skin of your quivering hands.
Youâve never healed an injury this severe before, never brought anyone back from the dead. Hell, you donât even know if you can. But god damn it, youâre not going to sit here and not at least try.
So you press your gore drenched hands on either side of Soaps temples and let his pain tear through you, each of your nerve endings burning under your skin as you use all your energy to try reversing and absorbing death itself. Kneeling on the cold dirty floor, you grip Soaps skull till your knuckles blanch. A blood curdling scream rips through you, echoing loudly off the metal ceiling, as your body writhes above him in agony. Tears flow down your face, off your chin, splattering in wet patches on the cooling skin of Soaps lifeless visage.
The others surround you, frozen in place and unable to do anything other than watch in abject horror as your body contorts and you let out inhumanly guttural noises. Your knees dig into the ground on either side of Soaps head, losing purchase against the wet floor and widening your stance as you curl inwards, nearly in the fetal position above him. You press down as hard as youâre physically able to, making sure to keep your hands on him even as your vision starts to blacken around the edges.
Youâve never felt a pain like this before -this intense, this all encompassing- but you canât let go. Wonât let go. Not even after you hear the bullet fall with a metallic clink on the concrete next to his bloodied scalp. Not even after you feel the skin around the wound close under your fingertips as if it was never even there.
Not until Soap wraps his warm calloused fingers around your unyielding wrists and rips them off of his head himself, finally coming to to the sounds of your hauntingly agonized cries above him.
As soon as the connection is broken, you collapse -lifeless and no longer breathing- onto the floor next to him.
The others quickly spring into action. Gaz goes to examine Soap -his trembling body swallowing deep, frantic gasps of air into aching lungs where he lies on the floor- as Price and Ghost huddle around you. Ghost reaches down, pressing the rough pads of his fingertips to your throat to search for a pulse, and immediately starts to perform CPR when he finds there isnât one.
Even now, none of the men who were present that day are able to explain what happened. Each simply thank god for the gift -the absolute miracle- they were given.
After fifteen minutes- fifteen excruciating minutes of you lying cold and dead on the floor, of your heart refusing to beat, of Ghost relentlessly -desperately- pushing against your lifeless body, of the other men watching helplessly, slowly starting to lose hope- you sputter in a loud stuttering breath and grab Ghosts wrists in an attempt to stop him.
Your vision is blurred when you wake up, a hazy filter over your senses as you try to make out your surroundings. All you see are two dark indistinguishable figures against a bright, nearly blinding backdrop. A loud ringing in your ears drowns out Ghosts words as he lifts you into his arms and tries to get you to focus on him. The dull tingle under your skin numbs the feeling of his hand smacking your cheek, a futile attempt to keep your drooping eyelids open. Your vision fades to black once more as you pass out, your body limply falling into Ghosts, but this time when his fingers search frantically for a pulse itâs there. Weak and faint, but there.
Price carries you back to the heli, your unconscious body flaccid as his strong arms hold you protectively against himself. Ghost and Gaz follow close behind, each under one of Soaps arms to help carry him back to the extraction point
Doctors are on you as soon as you make it back to base. They hook you up to machines, to IV lines, pumping things into your bloodstream and monitoring you closely to make sure you donât crash and die a second time.
When you finally wake up you find yourself lying on a cot in a dimly lit hospital room, hooked up to machines that beep gently in the quiet space. The sky behind the window is dark, the moon shining full and bright above you. You canât be sure what it is - maybe itâs the fact that you died, that Soap died, that you looked up at an identical expanse of stars not 24 hours prior to this moment and thought nothing of it, completely taking the peace and serenity of what was almost your final night alive for granted- but the sight is so beautiful that oncoming tears sting your weary eyes.
Soap is there, hunched over in a plastic chair thatâs much too small for his large frame, at the side of your bed. Your hand is gripped between his, has been for hours now, and he presses it against his balmy forehead as he mumbles prayers to some god he had lost hope in a long time ago. You hear the sound of his breath catching before his head snaps to look at you, the feeling of you moving in his tender grasp startling him. The knee that had been bouncing erratically stills. When your eyes meet his, you notice theyâre red rimmed, bloodshot, and glassy with tears. Mohawk mussed from him gripping tightly at the strands.
Wordlessly, he stands up, letting go of your hand in favor of taking your face in both of his. His usually bright blue eyes are now muted, glittering with lingering tears as the moonlight filters in through the window, and he leans in to kiss you. The softness of it belies the deep desperation within him. Thereâs so much emotion behind the gentle press of his lips against yours. Itâs gratitude, reverence. Despair, an apology. Itâs searching, seeking, questioning whether youâre really here, whether heâs really here, whether the two of you are really alive after everything.
His fingers slide across your neck, down your arms, one finding the small of your back and the other nestling between your shoulder blades. Your body still tingles with static numbness, his caress unfelt by blunted nerve endings, but the heat of his hands bleeds deeply beneath your skin - warming wherever he touches down to the bone. He pulls you up and against him, squeezing as tightly as his weakened muscles will allow.
Your trembling fingers find themselves twisted in the fabric of his shirt, pulling him closer, closer, closer. A deep seated need to feel his heartbeat against your own, to feel the warmth of his body, to feel the life within him. To try and absorb his life into yourself and prove to your broken spent body that youâre still alive too.
You tangle leaden fingers through his hair as the kiss deepens, force your loose jaw to move in tandem with his. Itâs all a frenzy of wet tongues, clashing teeth and hands that grasp onto one another as if the other could disappear at any moment.
And maybe either of you could.
It was so sudden the first time. Finished before the surprised shriek that exploded in your chest could escape past your lips. The firing of the gun, the drop of his body onto the hard floor in front of you, his blood that spread from the hole in his head to the soles of your boots and stained your hands in sticky crimson.
Your eyes sting with tears as you start to bawl against him. You break away from the kiss and let your head fall into the crook of his neck, pressing your ear against his pulse point just to hear the blood rushing through his veins. Alive. He moves his hand to cradle the back of your neck and clutches you impossibly closer, breathing life back into your body with his touch. Alive. His sobs wrack against you as you cling to him -the world dwindling down to just the two of you as you grasp onto one another tightly, letting the tremors of each otherâs bodies prove to each of you that youâre both still here. Alive.
âYou died.â The words come out as a breathless sob, coarse and gravelly from emotion and the strain caused by your earlier cries. âyou were dead.â
âAye, I ken.â
It takes a great effort for him to speak, his voice watery and fractured as he mutters each syllable into the quiet of the room. He crushes his wobbling lips to the skin of your temple in an attempt to ground himself, his tears dampening your skin as he burrows his head into you.
âI ken. Ye died bringinâ me back tae lifeâ
Soap slides into the cot next to you, carefully maneuvering himself around the cords and tubes, and you two hold each other for the rest of the night. Your bodies meld together, your head resting on his solid chest, arms and legs tangled under the flimsy hospital blanket. Thereâs no use in trying to fall asleep, both of you too terrified that the other might fade away if you shut your eyes for more than a moment. Instead you lay there, listening to one anotherâs steady heart beats, focusing on the feeling of the otherâs chest moving as you breathe -as if doing so is the only thing keeping either of you from slipping away again.
You lie together in silence, staring into nothingness, anchoring one another to your fragile reality.
I may of sent this before but my wifi was messed up so I don't know if it went through, but!!! Can you draw 141 doing communal shower antics and maybe if you'll be soooo kind to bless me with some gaz stuff just doing anything on duty love him in your style, keep creatingđ
When you gave your coworker your address, you expected it to be used in emergencies. Not...whatever this is.
"Sir...what the actual fuck?" You grimace, rubbing the sleep from your eyes.
You're still stood in your ratty, oversized pajamas you alwayd wear. Blanket wrapped around you, the pink bunny slipped ghost bought you the only thing keeping your toes from freezing. Blearily, you look at the clock "it's one in the morning. On a weekend. On my leave."
Stood in the middle of your living room, cloaked in shadows without bothering to turn the lights on. Gaz tilts his head, then goes right back to very loudly sweeping the floor.
"....right. awesome. Glad you're happy, kyle." You huff, turning into the kitchen to flick on the light.
It's not...unusual for gaz to get like this. You've seen it maybe twice before on base. Once he spent the entire night running laps, the other you found him after dark in the gym.
You learned that he gets restless. Enough so that he breaks in to your apartment to clean the place.
You brew some coffee for you and tea for him, hoping to level out the playing fields a bit. You emerg with two warm cups, mumbling "tea, kyle. With honey, the kind you like."
He doesn't respond, of course, so you tuck yourself into the corner of your couch and wait. Kyle has moved on to dusting the walls. Vaguely, you wonder if he ever cleans anyone else's apartments.
"Come sit with me," you croon when he finally pauses to sip at the drink. Gaz stares blankly for a moment, and you watch as he slowly slips back into his body, eyes wrinkling in that subtle smile. "You've worked hard enough."
You wouldn't know it, but just being close to you helps him feel better, helps ground him. Your presence on the couch while he cleaned...it helped more than he'd admit.
Kyle falls asleep with his face mushed into your shoulder, and through the curtains you watch the sunrise. It's...nice.

âIâŚI just want to kiss you first. More than anything, I think.âÂ
This earns him an amused huff. âSweet JohnnyâŚâ
Johnâs cheeks grow warm. âIâm serious.âÂ
âI know you are,â Simon replies, his voice soft.Â

Also, Simon has a service dog. Her name is Sadie. She is best girl.
As an older queer, allow me to say: the walls of the closet are load-bearing. It is our job as a community to stand in front of that door and tell everyone who wants to peek inside to fuck off.
There are so many reasons a person may choose not to come out and there is no reason a person would owe the public or a stranger that information. Certainly it's not owed simply because someone is famous.
We have fought for decades to make it safer for people to be open and authentic about themselves, but we are not yet there. And even if we were, the closet would still be something we need to maintain for those who are not ready to reveal that part of themselves.
He doesnât mean to cry. Honest. In fact he hates crying. Especially in front of you. Especially over all of the small, simple things you do for him.
But when he walks through the door, mind still half somewhere heâll never talk about, and he sees you in the kitchen, humming, with your sleeves rolled up, he can hardly help the pang in his chest.
The tableâs full. A roast, potatoes, and something with butter and garlic that fills his nose and warms him up and goes straight to his gut.
You turn with that terrifically happy smile, "Simon! You're home!" and in that moment he believes it. Finally home.
Then it all hits him at once. The smell, the warmth, the plates set for two, and ultimately, the sight of someone who thought about him while he's been gone for weeks with hardly a word.
He blinks once and then itâs all blurred through his tears. Then heâs standing there in the doorway like a terribly in love idiot.
Youâre at his side in a heartbeat. âSi? Whatâs wrong?â
And he can only manage the small shake of his head because thereâs no way to explain it.
How do you tell someone that youâve spent a lifetime coming home to nothing?
So he just folds into you, hides his face against your shoulder, and you let him. You hold him until the tears slow, until his breath steadies, until he lifts you up if only to hear you giggle as he settles you into your chair.
He scoots his around the table so that he can sit next you. And he eats slow, enjoying every single bite of the door you made to share with him. Listening to the recap of the week you've had.
Later, when you're both finally settled in bed, youâll tease him for apologizing, and for thanking you like itâs the first time anyoneâs ever done it.
You won't question it, and he'll appreciate that more than you know.
But for now, you just let him have the simple, devastating miracle of being fed and loved and alive.
Can we get more of reader self harming? Maybe some hurt/comfort? Love the way u write it :>

The urge never really leaves you.
You wouldn't call it a desire, more of a backup. There's always that reassurance that no matter how bad it gets you can always work the blade deeper. Even years since you "recovered" and joined the military, you keep a blade close.
So is it really a surprise when things start getting bad again? Somewhere between the gunfire and the bodies of a family on the side of the road. Whatever life you had slipped out from you and into the flood drain with a comrade's grey matter.
It's pathetic. You know.
Having to turn to the blade just to keep yourself tethered to your body. As if in the act of being fully healed, your mind would finally decide to leave. Leave you, drifting, going through the motions. It's a terrifying thought.
The cuts keep you present. Small, at first, nothing more than a nick. But it grows, that urge that follows you doggedly through battlefield and linoleum landscape alike. It clouds your mind, clouds your vision to the point you are blind to others.
Blind to the concerned looks Kyle and Johnny share when you stare off into nothing for half of breakfast. Blind to the way Simon carefully watches your expression when your shift, clothes snagging on half-healed gashes. Blind to the quiet acceptance price wears when you are alone with him.
Soon, the corpses you pass by start to change under the veil of a dream. Warp into you. Body crushed, organs spilling out and covered in flies. Rot seeping out and limbs bloated.
It starts to feel...appealing.
A corpse. Dead, decayed. You would be no Hector of Troy. There would be no one to reverse your desecration. Just another smear of gore in the journal of war.
And it would be so easy. You stand atop a building, rifle packed away after another clean op. Clean, but not without death. Casualties under a certain number, deemed acceptable. Corpses another statistic to quantify the cost of war. They have no names once they die. How would that feel? The ledge is right there. Would your chest burst open like a cantaloupe on the sidewalk? The ledge is under your feet.
Would you feel in control again? The ledgeâ
A hand curls tight and sharp around your forearm, yanks you back so hard your back slams into gravel. Ghost is looking down at you with wide eyes, hand placed firmly on your shoulder like he expects you to fight. "What the fuck, kid?! What the hell was tha'?!"
You look at ghost. His eyeblack is smudged with sweat. He grabs his comms, shouts something into it without ever looking away from you. When he lets go, his other hand comes up to snap in front of your eyes.
You feel...distant. disappointed. This wasn't supposed to happen.
"Kid? Kid! What the hell were you planning to do?" He sounds frantic, his hand feeling over your body and undoing the straps for your holster before you can respond.
"Suicide, innit? Thought I'd give it a go." You shrug, turn your head to press your cheek into the gravel. It's warm, soaked in the sunlight. Your body would have been warm. Warm and hot long after you died, so long as the sun shone on it.
Ghost pauses, takes a shuddering breath. He takes your knives next, palms patting over your gear. He's surprisingly gentle with your arms and thighs.
When he speaks, its with a watery voice "shit. Okay. Lets uh- lets go kid. We need to rendezvous, and then uhâ debrief with price, yeah? Cmon, get up, lets go."
His grip is tight around your forearm, and he takes the long way to avoid the ledge. You would have been warm.
"A corpse. Dead, decayed. You would be no Hector of Troy. There would be no one to reverse your desecration. Just another smear of gore in the journal of war. "
I just know when Johnny gets a partner, Simon is the constant third wheel.
And you aren't too keen on the idea at first. You didn't sign up for a brooding and antisocial third, but you eventually accept that they're a packaged deal. You even start to feel bad for Simon, he's got this intense connection to Johnny, and you soon realize it's because he's the only one whose ever gave him the time of day.
It was never a competition for Johnny either, the man just seemed to like to be involved. He was never jealousy of the attention Johnny gave you.
Everything becomes threes after that. Dinner reservations, movie tickets, matching pajamas you buy for the holidays that sparks concerned conversation from all your friends and family when you send out Christmas cards with a menacing man next to you and Johnny that they've never met.
He sleeps on the couch most nights. At first, it was after a night out at the pub, and he was too drunk to drive home. Then, it turned into every weekend. Which evolved into a third toothbrush at your bathroom sink, three pairs of shoes at your door, and a designated mug he drank his tea out of every morning.
You woke up to him in your kitchen more times than you didn't. He just became this constant presence in both of your lives that the two of you even forgot what it felt like for him not to be there.
And the two of you realize it might have gotten too far when you're looking to move out and only look at houses that come with a second room for him. The man is appalled when you ask him if he wants to have his own room, he wants to sleep in the same bed with you and Johnny.

mdni, 18+, cw graphic descriptions of self harm, mental health issues, brief mention of suicide
I cannot emphasise the self harm bit enough, so please scroll away if this topic is triggering, and take care of yourself.
I am in no means endorsing any form of self harm, just writing my experience with it. This is just a self indulgent fic for me bc my demons are screaming again, and I want fictional characters to comfort me
I do not claim to be any sort of mental health expert or an advocate for how you should deal with issues. I am just a humble writer writing vent things.
Please reach out for help if you need, remember that you are not alone in this â¤ď¸

In hindsight, maybe you should have seen it coming. The first warning sign should have been the way you started picking at your cuticles again. But this has always been a nervous habit of yours that has been hard to break, so you had categorised it under⌠a necessary evil. A strategy for self soothing that isnât too harmful.
Because even if your fingers start to bleed from the bits of skin youâve pulled it, itâs an easy fix. You donât even need a plaster, you can just improvise with a tissue tied around your finger, and go about your day.
Sure, sometimes you found yourself using the rubber band method, but thatâs also classified under harm reduction, right? A better alternative. Even if your skin started to form welts from the rhythmic smacking of rubber against skin. Even if your skin started to blacken and bruise. Even if oh shit, those bruises look like theyâre the kind to take a couple of days to fade. Thatâs fine, right? Because all the blood is still contained inside of you.
So you donât tell Simon, you donât want to bother him about any of these. He was dealing with much more trauma from the horrors of war and his damn awful childhood that your own problems seem trivial in comparison.
(Sometimes, when you lie awake in the dark of the night with bruises littering your skin, you canât help but be grateful Simon is gone for weeks or months at a time, because it means you can plan your⌠harm reduction sessions to ensure everything is spotless once he returns. Itâll be fine.)
At most, he will look at your pitiful stubs you call nails and gruffly ask, âRough day?â And you will nod, and he will not push, because god knows he doesnât want anyone pushing when shit starts to get real. He will make you a mug of tea, and pull you a little closer.
And he will not see any bruises, because they would have faded away a few days ago.
Itâs a balancing act, one you have perfected over years and years of careful juggling.
Sometimes, the sting of slapping a rubber band against your wrist isnât enough to soothe the itch crawling under your skin. Sometimes you find yourself wondering whatâs the fucking point?
Your hands shake as your carefully pry a blade free from its plastic casing. The adrenaline is flooding your system, making you dizzy. Itâs been so long, just this once, then youâll stopâŚ
The rush of endorphins make you high. You feel like a magician, summoning splotches of red with your silver wand.
But youâre out of practice, and your head is spinning too hard to think twice. A sleight of hand, the blinding white of stage lights, and an outpouring of bloody applause.
Shit. For a moment, you have a sick thought of congratulating yourself. But itâs quickly displaced by a oh my god how am I going to hide this? You stare for just a second, and then you switch to autopilot. Even as youâre watching red water go down the drain, even as youâre pulling edges closed with steri-strips, thereâs a small, petulant part of you protesting that you werenât done, thereâs still more to be done. More more more. You grit your teeth, trying instead to focus on the sting of antiseptic against open skin, and the horrified expression on Simonâs face when he finds out. If he finds out. God damn it, you canât remember the last time you had to stress about hiding this from someone else.
But thatâs okay. Youâve done it before, you can do it again. Just⌠youâve never done it with a seasoned SAS operator before.
You curl up into yourself, trying to breathe through the panic. For one wild moment, you contemplate running - breaking up with him over text with no explanation. But you quickly push that thought away, because that wouldnât be fair to him. You can do this. You can. Itâll be fine. Hopefully itâll at least scab over enough for there to be no risk of the wound reopening by the time he returns.
-
You conclude that you must have done something truly horrible in your past life, because he comes home early. Heâs never home early. But it seems like the universe is conspiring against you. (Or conspiring with you, with the part of you that knows you need help, that knows you shouldnât carry it alone, but you quickly shut that part out.) Maybe itâs shame, maybe itâs out of some twisted sense of moral duty to shield him from your sins, from how fucked up you can be. You donât want to be seen as needy. Youâre afraid heâll leave if he thinks you canât handle yourself, if he sees that youâre so broken you resort to doing such childish things.
So you hide from him. At least one of your brain cells were working that night, because you only touched the parts of you that could be easily covered with clothing.
He doesnât say a word when you shy away from his touch with a small shake of your head and a quiet apology. He doesnât react to your tensing up when he reaches out to hold your hip. He just nods, understanding, so fucking understanding that you want to rip your hair out. He wonât push, wonât touch you if you donât want him to, and you want to claw scratches into your face like an animal with its leg caught in a trap.
The guilt chips at you, day by day, but you donât budge. You want nothing more than to get on your knees and confess your crimes to him. You want him to try you for your wrongdoings and hang you at the stake for it.
You want him to⌠toâŚ
You want him to hold you and tell you itâs alright. You want him to see your hurt and make it better. You want him to help you feel less alone.
You press your head against the shower tiles, trying to get the feeling of being overwhelmed and stretched thin to stop. You want to cry, but the tears donât come.
You just turn the water to as hot as you can manage it, and scrub until your skin resembles that of a lobster. He says nothing about your too flushed cheeks and the way youâre red all over. Instead, he just flips the blanket open, a quiet invitation for you to curl up beside him.
You do. For a few moments, itâs silent, save for the steady thumping of his heartbeat. You press closer to his chest, absorbing the vibrations, inexplicable evidence that heâs alive, and so are you.
He presses a kiss to your head and lingers there, his chin resting above your head.
âYou got something on your mind, luvie?â he murmurs. For a moment, you think about saying something, but the words get caught in your throat. So you shake your head, wordless.
Simon shifts slightly, his head reaching down to tilt your chin up, forcing you to meet his gaze. Itâs steadfast, sure, and full of quiet concern. âTalk to me,â he says, thumb brushing against your cheek. âLet me in, yeah?â
Finally, you break. You canât stop the waterfall of tears rolling down your cheeks. He doesnât make you, doesnât try to stop them either. He just holds you through it, a bulwark against the storm.
Youâre gasping out apologies and endless sorryâs, and heâs running his hand over the rapid pulse point of your neck. âNone of that, you hear?â he says, holding you close. âDonât want any of that sorry bullshit. Not with me.â
âI fucked up, Si,â you say eventually, once the worst of it has passed. âI fucked up real bad. Iâm sorry.â
âWhat do you mean by that, love?â he asks, with the patience of a man who knows he always gets what he wants in interrogations. And just for this once, youâre grateful. You can hide behind that fact, tell yourself that you stood no chance against him. The truth is, youâre tired of fighting it and hiding your pain from the world.
You donât know how to tell him with words. Instead, you gently push him back and move a little away from him. He goes easily, no resistance at all. And then, with shaking hands, you reach for the waistband of your sweatpants and slowly tug down.
For a moment, thereâs dead silence. You can hardly dare to breathe. And then, a muttered curse escapes his breath. Your heart rate spikes again, flooded by shame.
He grabs your wrist, his eyes blazing when they meet yours.
âWho the fuck did this?â he demands, a cold intensity to his demeanour. You shake your head, tears starting to form. âTell me,â he insists again, and thatâs when you notice the tinge of desperation creeping into his voice. Like heâs hoping that itâs something else, a person he can fight to make it go away.
But itâs not. Thereâs no deadlier opponent than the one living under your skin. Itâs a battle he canât fight for you.
âYouâre not stupid, Si. Please donât make me say it,â you say quietly.
He lets out a heavy breath. Inhales. Exhales. When he speaks again, his voice is forced to neutrality. âWhat the hell were you thinking?â
You deflate. âIâm sorry.â
âNo donât be sorry, fuck. Shit. I justâŚâ he rubs his hand over his face. âLetâs just⌠get you cleaned up, yeah? Let me have a look.â
His face is nothing but focused as he examines you, asking you about what youâve been using to prevent infections and how long itâs been. âThese will scar,â he murmurs.
âGuess weâll be matching,â you joke, trying to lighten the mood. His gaze snaps back to yours, and you shrink back at the cold fury in them. At that, he tries to soften, although thereâs still an unhappy tick in his jaw.
âRather saw my leg off than let you go through what I did. Jesus fuck luv, this is the kind of thing they do to torture people, and youâve been doing this kind of shit on yourself? You ââ he cuts himself off again. Inhales. Exhales. âI just donât understand why you would do this to yourself.â
For a moment, you think about defecting, about running and hiding and forgetting all about it. But thereâs genuine hurt and confusion in his eyes. And behind it all, love for you.
You look away again, not wanting to see his reaction to your justifications. âYouâve smoked before, right? Lit a joint for a moment of calm, even though itâs killing your lungs?â He grunts in response, waiting for you to finish that thought.
âItâs a bit like that, I guess. When I was little, I⌠didnât really know how else to cope. It felt good, yâknow? Hurting. I guess the adrenaline and all plays a huge part, but also⌠just⌠sometimes I always feel like Iâm doing something wrong. And this is my way of repenting for it.â You shrug, fingers picking at the seams of your shirt. âYou canât teach an old dog new tricks, and all that.â He opens his mouth to speak again, but you quickly cut him off. âYou donât need to understand it. Just that itâs something that has worked for me. And I know itâs not healthy, but it just seems like the lesser of two evils.â
âYouâre damn right itâs not healthy,â he murmurs, but itâs clear heâs making an effort to keep his voice non-accusatory. âIf I did shite like that, Price will have me seeing a shrink.â
âI do⌠see a shrink,â you say slowly. âJust⌠havenât been there in a while.â
âHuh,â he says. âThe shrink do you good?â You nod slowly, and he mimics it. It would look almost comical if the situation didnât feel so heavy.
He sighs again, and reaches out to take your hand in his. For a moment, he holds it there, looking distant. Eventually, he presses a kiss to it, and looks at you with a focused gaze once more. âRight. Hereâs what weâre gonna do, luv. Tomorrow, weâll call up that shrink of yours and get you booked for an appointment. Tonight, you and I are not gonna do anything else but just stay here. Sound alright to you?â
You manage to speak an affirmative past the lump in your throat. âCome here then,â he says, and you obey, resting your head against his chest.
Youâre still tense, feeling suffocated by the silence. You wonder what heâs thinking of you now. If he thinks youâre pathetic for seeking attention like this â
Your spiral is broken by his voice. âUsed to wonder what would happen if I was KIA. Itâs not like I ran into gunfire blindfolded or anything, thatâd be bloody stupid and would put my menâs lives at risk.â You look up to face him, and he meets your gaze with a wry smile. âBut I used to think a bullet to the head wonât be so bad. Clean. Plus at least Iâd have done something. Not like I had anything else back then, yâknow?â
Your finger resumes its tracing of a circular path on his chest. You donât know what to say to that, how to begin to unravel the threads of hurt and pain heâs been through.
But you know, perhaps better than anyone, that you canât fight his battles for him. Just like he canât fight the thoughts that live inside you. What you can do instead, is become that quiet support, the devoted partner on the sidelines, holding a candle while you wait for him to come home. âIâm glad youâre alive, Si.â
He snorts. âGlad I lived long enough to find someone fucked up like me.â
Itâs horrible, that brand of terrible dark humour thatâs uniquely him. You laugh anyways, and feel some of that tension ease up. He shifts his weight and turns to look back at you. âIâm glad youâre alive too, luv.â
Privately, you correct him that itâs non-suicidal self injury. Thereâs a difference. But you understand the sentiment, and you allow it to warm your chest.
Tomorrow, you will call your therapist. For now, this is enough.
