in chapter 4:

“But why were you so curious about Lydia anyway?” He looks down at Magnus, who’s adjusting some pots below the counter. “You trying to see if she’s available? I’m pretty sure the answer is yes, but don’t quote me.”

“She's nice, but I'm not interested, worry not.”

“Why would I be worried?” Alec busies himself with the box of plates, unpacking them. Magnus watches him carefully for a minute, quietly taking plates before he speaks again.

“Are you busy tonight?”

Alec looks up. “No. I’ll probably just watch the Mets game.” 

“Why don't you watch it here? That's all I was planning on. I'll order a pizza, we still have beer. Get more done in the meantime.”

Or, Alec helps Magnus move into his new apartment

in chapter 3:

Alec joins Magnus on the bench, watching the coaches clean up their mess. “I never asked you the other night, did you ever consider going pro?”

“Briefly. Didn’t get drafted, though.”

“Seriously?” Alec asks incredulously. “Scouts are wrong for that one. You have the best skills of any catcher I’ve ever seen.”

“That you’ve seen, sure.” Magnus smiles ruefully. “But when everyone out there is just as good, if not better, it’s easy to slip through the cracks.”

“Sucks though, doesn’t it?”

“It did for a while, but I wasn’t too worried about it. I was the backup on my own college team. I knew my odds were slim. I thought about not even registering in New York, but then I got this offer. Best decision I’ve made.”

Alec squints at him. “It’s been two weeks. Not even.”

“And yet I feel more belonging here than I have anywhere else I’ve played.”

Alec smiles. “I’m glad we’re doing that for you.”

“Don’t sell yourself short, you’re a big part of it.”

“Well, you’re welcome.”

Or, they continue to get to know each other, and the siblings start to notice

“So, how long have you played?”

“Since I could swing a bat, basically. I’m an only child and my mom thought I could benefit from a team sport. I was terrible at soccer.” That gets a laugh from Alec. “What about you?”

“I started tee ball after my parents adopted Jace. He had a little toy bat with his belongings, so they thought it would be good for both of us.”

“It seems it has been. You’re still teammates nearly 20 years later.”

The Brooklyn Wolves are coming off a mediocre year, not to mention they’ve lost their long-time catcher, but the group and their surrounding fans have hope for them after a strong finish last season. Alec’s not expecting the new guy to fill Luke’s shoes right away, but little does he know his new teammate Magnus will fill holes in his world he didn’t even know he had, and be a huge part in catapulting the team to new heights.

Magnus opens the drawer beside him, pulling out a small lock identical to the one they’d put on the fence in Brooklyn, without the inscription. 

Alec raises an eyebrow with a smile. “You found another fence?”

“No.” Magnus purses his lips. “I might have incinerated the one we had here after you…”

“Yeah.” Alec sighs, but his lips quiver into a smirk. “Reasonable reaction though. Very you.”

“I am.” He ruffles a hand through Alec’s hair lovingly.

“What time is it?” Alec asks, still quiet.

“Almost 7.”

Alec looks surprised by this. “Really? I came home-”

“After lunch, I know. I talked to your sister when I got home.”

“Sorry, I thought I was just tired this morning. Don’t get sick a lot.”

“I’ve noticed. We’ve been married three years.”

“That you were run down and tired, and I told her I could sense it’s worse than that. What are you even doing here?”

“It’s not that bad.”

“Sure, because I don’t feel any general sense of unease on your behalf.”

Alec rolls his eyes. “Fine. I’m definitely sick. But I have tomorrow off and then-”

“And then you’re off to Italy. So maybe you should go home and rest now so you’re not completely out of commission on your anniversary trip."
