I am currently in the middle of watching an anime called Darling in the Franxx. I was intrigued by the few cosplays I saw on the internet and it was suddenly added to Netflix. I decided to watch it without expecting much, but the story and shrouding mystery have somehow got me hooked. I’m writing this at 2 AM because the recent episode (I am on episode 14, no spoiler please) has just shattered my personal emotional shield that I have been building in the past few years. And now I can’t sleep.
I like to think that I was a warm and friendly person, who liked to make friends with all my schoolmates in primary and secondary school. I remember I was “awarded” as ‘The person that everyone in the class wants to befriend with.’ But things changed, a lot.
As I became older and was in university, I start to lose my faith and hope in friendship. I felt that I was constantly being disappointed by my friends. I tried to care and make initiatives for my friends, but they didn’t resonate with the feeling. Slowly, I started to adopt new principles, “With expectations, come disappointments” and “A friendship is a 2-way interaction. If I am the only one putting effort and the other side don’t even care, then there’s no point in holding the friendship.” I started to cross people off of my “friends list”. I hid when I saw people that I knew at the bus stop. I lost interest in making new friends and only maintained those who actually cared, like my housemates and a few other close friends from uni.
At the workplace, a similar cycle happened. I found a group that I liked to hang out with. We were lunch, gossip and complain buddies. But again, those people started to break my “terms of friendship”. I felt that they didn’t care about me as much as I cared about them. They casually went out for lunch without inviting me. “Are they my real friends?” I thought. Again, I started cutting people out and maintained only a few who were very close. Were my expectations too high? Was I not as good of a friend as I thought?
Consequently, I became more and more private. I became more and more introverted. I became colder and colder. I felt lonely and down. I adopted another principle, “Happiness comes from oneself, not from external factors.” So I tried to keep myself busy. I made Gundams, watched thousands of Youtube videos, bought dinner for one. “I am enough by myself. I am happy being alone” is the mantra I kept saying to myself. My introversion grew and with it, probably, my social skills deteriorated.
As Hiro and Zero Two found their memories of each other, it somehow shattered all these shields that I have built. I imagined the feeling of having someone you dearly love and care about, someone that will be there for you and you can rely on, someone of great importance in your life that you will do anything to be with her. I have not felt that for a long time. Heck, I don’t even know if I have ever experienced such strong feelings before. Will I ever? I almost cried, curling in my bed with all the thoughts and emotions flooding my brain.
So here I am, writing this piece, in desperate to calm my mind. I hope I’ll be able to sleep after this and I hope Darling in the Franxx has a satisfying ending.

What's Not to Love? Satay and the City has concluded its climax and what’s left is the project conclusion and review. To sum it up, this has been a painful journey but what a beautiful result. To be honest, the journey was full of challenges, especially when everyone was busy with their daily work/school/social life and it was very hard to get things moving or to coordinate a rehearsal. There were multiple occasions where I am asking myself “Why am I even doing this?”. However, the last couple of weeks towards the show day had been wonderful. Everyone was giving their 200% and working together, everything seemed to flow seamlessly. We managed to perform 4 shows through, based on my experience, a pretty smooth on-schedule 2-day bump in. It was splendid. I’m grateful to be able to meet and work with these bunch of people. Thank you for always bearing though our inexperience and discoordination and for always supporting and helping each other. And the most amazing is seeing how this production has inspired people: from professional performers who are genuinely excited for this amateur, volunteer-based production to the novice cast/crew who had grown tremendously through this experience. From regular audience who were sincerely amazed and amused by our show to first timer who were moved to do similar stuff outside of normal work. Many are asking “What’s next?” Truly, this is the reason I keep on coming back. What’s not to love? Special thanks to founders: to @florenshaivyana for trusting me to co-lead this production with you, to @stephaniemahasin for always there through this tough journey and huge respect to @anyaadr for the tremendous artistic vision & execution (although a lot of debate in the process, but the result speaks for itself). Thank you and carry on. (at Drama Centre Theatre) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6NmbA5BkBD/?igshid=ba0p0wvqnbfm
*EDIT
After watching this video, I guess we need to accept that some of the changes were done to adapt the story in movie format and some are for more practical reasons.*
Why do filmmakers like to stray away from the original source?
Just watched Ready Player One and, as a person who read the book, felt slightly disappointed. Especially combined with the Tomb Raider movie adaptation a few weeks ago.
It's feels like they are not even trying. They don't summarize the book, instead change the plot and characters altogether. It's obvious why books are always better than their movie adaptations.
Ok, maybe there's a creative ego, like "I want to make this story uniquely mine". Then, maybe don't use other people's work as reference? What about making your own original script?
Also, if I were an author, I would want the movie adaptations to follow closely to my book, capturing the essential points of the rich & thoughtful story of my original creation based on my personal imagination, experience, culture and background.
Well, the movie itself is fun! Tons of CGI, good CGI mind you (phew... Thanks Spielberg). And of course tons of easter eggs!! You got to be a geek to be able to appreciate the geekiness of the movie! It's so fun pointing out all the familiar characters from other movies, games and comics. And they manage to make it more relevant, rather than sticking to 80s theme which many of us never heard about. Sadly though, they underplay a lot of the complexity and the darker side of the book.
When I heard that they were making a Tomb Raider movie based on the 2013 video game, I was very excited because I played the game and I enjoyed it. I decided to replay the game just before the movie to refresh my memory of the story and scenes. And I after I watched the movie, it is not as what I expected, some in good ways and some in bad ways.
Disclaimer, I am not a pro gamer nor an avid Tomb Raider fan that played all her games since the polygon boobs era. I’m just a casual gamer who happens to know a bit about Lara Croft and enjoyed the reboot game a lot. And a knowledge of the game is preferable to relate to this review.
The first 15-20 minutes of the movie, we explore more about Lara herself. She practices martial arts which explains her excellent physique and strength (which is very useful further down in the movie). She is rebellious, fearless but smart. She has a huge inheritance, but decides to become a bike courier instead.
Lara’s father, Richard Croft, was an established businessman. But he was missing 7 years ago and Lara still has a hard time to admit that he is gone. When her father’s lawyer gives her a puzzle from Richard’s will, she discovers a clue about her father’s secret “hobby”. Here she uncovers the legend of Himiko and where her father might be.
Here, the movie manages to enhance the game. The game starts straight away in the boat scene, without revealing much about Lara’s personality and family background (to be explored more in the 2015 game). The movie, then, presents a stronger motivation for Lara to go through all the adversity in finding Himiko and Yamatai Island.
Lara flies to Hongkong to find a drunk captain named Lu Ren (which according to my Chinese speaking friends means: passerby). Lu Ren was never part of the game and he proves himself to be a mere passerby in the movie by not contributing much to the overall story (except allowing Tomb Raider movie to be screened in China). Compared this to more than seven crews that sailed with Lara in the game, who add a lot of support and emotional roller coaster for Lara throughout her struggle in the island. This brings me to…
Nothing much, really. The island is pictured to be in the Devil’s sea. However, it seems like they are only struck with bad luck because a storm attacks their boat and strands them on the island. There is nothing mysterious, no supernatural storm, no old creepy castles or mysterious storm guards. It’s just a plain small island out of nowhere with forest and caves.
The island itself is never explored. Well, it’s impossible to compress all that 12+ hour from the game into a mere 2-hour movie. But surely, they can take some mysterious elements of it.
Mathias Vogel appears and presents himself as an evil corporate slave who was working for a giant evil organization named Trinity trying to steal Himiko’s secret power to be used as super weapon (Really? Must everything about super weapon?). He is stupid, use a lot of brute power to solve issues, relies a lot on his mercenaries, pro-slavery and then carelessly kills the slaves whenever he likes. A typical bad guy in movies that is pure evil and everyone totally hates him.
The Mathias in the game, however, shows a more complex personality. Yes, he is as brutal, but he has a deeper reason to do so. He was stranded in the island, long before Lara and he was trying to get out the island but he couldn’t because of the supernatural storm. He had tried many ways and probably gone mad, resorting to sacrificing Sam to Himiko to escape the island. He is as desperate as Lara to survive and he is just doing what he knows to endure.
It seems too good to be true. After 7 years living alone in the island, hiding from Mathias and his mercenaries, almost loses his mind, Lara finds him alive and well.
However, Richard is super consumed with the Himiko legend that he keeps on blabbering about Himiko even though he just met his dearly beloved daughter after 7 years. Should he be more worried about Lara? “Why is she in the island in the first place?” “What happened to her with all the injuries?” Doesn’t he want to spend as much time with his daughter? Doesn't he regret leaving Lara behind and would do anything in the world is to get back to her? Nope. He's just all about Himiko and saving the world. Not my ideal father type.
There are a lot of action scenes in the movie and I love how the actions follow the theme of the game. Jumping cliff to cliff, climbing old rusty plane, falling off old rusty plane with parachute, stabbed on the right abs, the climbing axe and the bow and arrow. Sadly, there are not many archery and axe scenes, albeit these are the iconic Lara's weapons. Instead, she fights and kills mostly with her wrestling moves. Lara also misses the opportunity to shoot and explode some barrels, a typical Lara Croft’s move.
The Himiko tomb is presented as a cave, instead of a castle. The cave, however, is equipped with many cave traps and pattern style puzzle. Take the collapsing floor trap. Here Lara and the group must find the corresponding pieces to display certain color to stop the trap and open the door. How does the trap work? Where would the light source be if the person did not accidentally cross the door before activating the trap? What does the colored light shine onto? What did the trap creator think when he designed the cave?? Well, this sounds ridiculous but might be a closer reference to the older games puzzles.
The 2013 game includes puzzle as well, but more realistic. The puzzles are more about finding way. In ruined caves/temples, how can Lara get to the top floor to collect the treasure?
My Lady Himiko
The legend says that Himiko is a full evil. The game had Himiko tries to move her soul to Sam so that she can live forever; a very supernatural event at the end of the game. The movie, on the other hand, proves that Himiko is not bad or supernatural at all. The legend says that she is evil but actually a savior who sacrificed herself in order not to spread a deadly disease by isolating herself inside a tomb in a mysterious island. This is a very interesting plot twist, a revelation that explains something supernatural and makes it logical. But somehow Richard didn't know it or refused to reveal the secret and does not seem to be surprised. Neither do Mathias.
The story ends with Richard sacrificing himself, Lara kills Mathias and run from a collapsing cave. Greeted by Lu Ren who was waiting and did nothing the whole time, they escape the island easily using a helicopter (Can all the slaves fit inside the helicopter?). Not a single turbulence.
She is back to her father’s office, signs off her father's will and uncovers another secret that her father's most trusted staff is maybe the person behind Trinity this whole time. This will be the plot for the sequel (if any), like the Rise of the Tomb Raider game launched in 2015.
As a movie it is decent. It is enjoyable and good for casual viewers who don't know about Lara Croft. But as someone who enjoyed the game, the movie does not live to my expectations.
The movie fails to capture Lara’s character growth. In the game, we can see Lara learning to survive in the island. She started as an apprentice, learning to heal herself, uncovering the secrets of the island and the legend, gathering useful items from the forest, crafting, learning to shoot, and keep growing her mental and survival skills until she comes out a warrior.
The movie does not include many of the memorable scenes and angles from the game and they even changed the whole plot! It toned down the brutality, avoiding blood and dead bodies. Worse, they removed the Endurance crew and introduce Lu Ren and Richard??
Personally, I think the movie is not using Tomb Raider's title to its full potential. The game already has a strong storyline to tap into, but the movie decides to go the opposite way.

You’re thinking of Safari. Sephora is an informal term for the seven-week period of counting the days between Pesach and Shavuot in the Jewish calendar.
You’re thinking of Sefiras. Sephora is a bright blue gemstone best known for combining with Ruby to create Garnet and lead the Crystal Gems, training Pokemon, and/or assisting Steel to fight against time’s intrusions into our realm.
No no no guys, you’re thinking of Sif. Sephora is a venereal disease that turns your brain to swiss cheese, going so far as to destroy external features like the nose. Famous gangster Al Capone suffered from sephora.
Hey @supasel @jshea29, we forgot to take photo together! Hahaha. Anw, thanks for the souvenirs! Glad that you had a great time in Singapore. But I believe you'll have even greater time in Indonesia. Hahaha. Safe flight and enjoy the rest of your trip!
