Rainbow capitalism was good actually, for many reasons.
It wasn't that long ago that banks and companies would refuse to serve gay people. People are going all the way up to the Supreme Court to enshrine the right not to serve LGBTQ people in their business. Rainbow capitalism showed which companies were safe to do business with and it pressured other companies to do the same.
Likewise, companies did and do try to discrominate against LGBTQ employees. Rainbow capitalism let employees be open about their identities and feel safe. The 50 year old gay man marching with Bank of America may have hidden his sexuality for decades because it wasn't safe to come out at work.
It helped set top down societal values and norms that LGBTQ people are a welcome part of society.
It pressured companies to adopt nondiscrimination policies and DEI policies.
It made companies donate to pride celebrations and LGBTQ causes.
with mixed success, it provided powerful and visible allies for political change, like the Respect for Marriage Act. Businesses pulled out of North Carolina and forced it to go back on a bathroom bill.
The drawdown of rainbow capitalism has real consequences. Pride celebrations losing corporate sponsorships means they are not able to hold those celebrations. DEI programs are being rolled back. Companies are buying less from queer owned businesses. Support for gay marriage is actually decreasing in polls.
Are these all cause and effect? No. Is it sometimes just a lagging indicator? Yeah. Are fair weather allies like big corps really not great? Yeah.
Like we're seeing greater threats to LGBTQ people and rights now than in 20 years and if you're still complaining about rainbow capitalism or having to qualify it by saying "I know rainbow capitalism is bad but" then I think you've lost the plot as surely as we've lost some of our biggest most powerful and most visible allies

Europe is done with American Big Tech. Well, sort of. Since the start of President Donald Trumpโs chaotic second administration last year, concerned governments and companies across the continent have accelerated plans to end their near-total reliance on technology from US firms.
Alongside political declarations, home-grown European tech development, and millions in additional funding, a WIRED analysis has documented dozens of public instances of companies, governments, NGOs, and education establishments stepping away from US technology companies in favor of open source or local alternatives. It is likely the tip of the iceberg.
โThe aggressive policies by the Trump administration, attacking international law, as well as the EU and democratic principles, has led to several wake-up calls,โ says Marietje Schaake, a non-resident fellow at Stanford Universityโs Cyber Policy Center and a former member of the European Parliament.
The moves are widespreadโand growing.
Last week, the European Commission launched its official long-term plans to rely less on US technology. The European Parliament has switched the default search engine on its devices from Google to the French alternative Qwant. Thousands of workers in the French government are using its own open-source office softwareโdubbed LaSuiteโas officials aim to โbreak freeโ from dependence on American tech firms. An open-source documents offering from more than a dozen European tech companies, called Euro-Office, is due to launch imminently. Cities across the Netherlands, France, and Germany are all moving away from Microsoft Office and Google Docs
Itโs not just productivity software, either. The Dutch government is moving its code away from Microsoft-owned Github to its own repository. In a series of decisions, Finland reportedly decided not to move its election data to Amazonโs cloud services, while the organization behind Belgiumโs .be top-level domain has said it will move away from AWS. Meanwhile, Eurosky has been spun up as an interoperable alternative to Bluesky on the AT Protocol that underlies both social networks.
WIRED gathered the publicly known instances of European entities abandoning US-based Big Tech. (Click the arrows to scroll the timeline of instances below, or view them in this Google Sheet or a Proton Sheet).
While many of the โdigital sovereigntyโ plans were in place before the start of Trumpโs second term, often cited as urgently driving the change is the fallout from US sanctions against officials linked to the International Criminal Court. (The court itself ended up moving away from Microsoftโs technology).

Public support for the LGBTQ+ community by corporations has become politically risky, public relations expert says.

1. The court holds Google responsible for statements made by its AI, considering them Google's statements (search engines have limited liability for results in their engine as they're the words of other sites/companies/people), meaning when their AI lies/hallucinates they're liable for the defamation/harm resulting from those statements.
2. Google's defense that customers are generally aware of the lack of reliability and are responsible for fact checking was dismissed. As the court pointed out, that would "significantly diminish" AI Search's stated purpose and it can't be distinguished from Google's business practices/statements as a search tool.
3. Studies have found about 91% of Google's everyday AI responses are accurate, leaving millions of searches per HOUR with potential liability for falsehoods. 56% of correct responses weren't supported by the sources the AI listed. Both of which mean Google is now liable for a LOT more AI "errors."
4. Google was held liable for 80% of court costs in this case and this precedent is expected to reverberate around the world. This is a massive shift from the 3rd-party search provider role Google has previously played and it comes right as they've tied ALL searches to their AI search.
5. If the words are Google's, this solidifies the position of universities who demand that all answers from AI are fully cited. If all the in-line citations now have to be (Google, 2026), that's going to make it obvious when someone's trying to use Google as a source. There's still the difficulty with people who are academically dishonest by trying to pass off the AI writing as their own.
6. 91% accuracy is officially too low to use as a source of references, which means the AI can't be used as a source of references either. This makes it less legitimate for such purposes than Wikipedia of all places (Wikipedia might need date/time proof of when it was accessed for the reference to be valid, but at least it is possible to prove the link existed at a particular date and time).
7. This will help encourage the rollout of courses on how to avoid AI search for students who need academic accuracy, because it's statistically not good enough to use.
8. This strengthens the case intellectual property authors have against Google in the EU, as this is proof that an intellectual property transfer took place.

Notably, DOGE cut the funding a few days before the US resumed imports of cattle from Mexico... the imports that had been suspended because of the screwworm outbreak in Mexico. So we've had a year of importing cattle from Mexico during a screwworm outbreak without monitoring the outbreak that we already knew about. Mexico's outbreak is pretty bad btw, and cases have been found not just in cattle and dogs but also humans. I assume the rest of Central America too. Not that many people seem to give a fuck about them ig.
