⚠️ Mood whiplash warning ⚠️
This is a truly random mix of whatever caught my eye.
I post my own poetry (and sometimes art) when real life allows.
Crack, fandom, shitposts - all day every day.
I don't use generative AI for my creative works, so they take time. But saving time isn't the point of art.
If you liked my original works: reblogs appreciated, reposts on other sites OK with me if you give credit. I have no clout for you to steal.
30+, UK; should probably be doing something useful right now, but I'm here anyway.
I write when I get the chance. Between fairly intensive family responsibilities and the general crappiness that is CFS/ME, chances aren’t in as plentiful supply as I’d like, but they do crop up sometimes.
I like to post my original poetry as text art style posts, mostly, because of a (possibly futile) hope that AI and misguided people won’t pass my work off as their own.

under US law, it's illegal for anyone who's not a member of a recognised native tribe to own an eagle feather. the penalty is a $100,000 fine.
14 years ago when I had recently moved to Alaska, I went hiking with an Aleut friend, and she pointed to a feather lying on the ground and said "hey that's a bald eagle tail feather, you should grab it!" and I was like "uhh I'm very white and that's very illegal" and she went "they're fuckin everywhere up here man. I have 20." so she grabs it off the ground and hands it to me and says "there, now it's a ceremonial gift from an indigenous person."
and I'm like, okay, cool, I guess this is how we do things in Alaska. nice.
so I keep this bald eagle tail feather around for years. display it in my home among other cherished memorabilia from places I've lived and visited, etc.
on a whim, I have just now looked it up. there is no exemption to that law for a ceremonial gift from an indigenous person. the last 7 years I lived in the US, I was technically a bald eagle poacher.
probably a good thing I don't intend to move back there anytime soon. I wonder what the statute of limitations is on bird crimes.

One of the most annoying genres of people on the internet are people who act like they believe science is one single monolithic thing. Like, you'll see an article saying something like "scientists studying the movement of tectonic plates", and then in the comments there'll be several smug people saying "smh why are scientists doing this instead of finding a cure for cancer", like. Why would a geologist be doing that.
This misunderstanding is something that does absolutely get abused to further certain interests when needed, as well.
A fictional example based on the actual understanding failures I’ve seen in many cases where someone regurgitates things they’ve heard from science reporting/ social media posts without reading into the publication:
When someone makes a statement like “they surveyed scientists and it turns out that 78% of them don’t even think climate change is a thing”, neglecting to mention that
equal weight was given to all participants’ opinion as “scientists” whether these were top-of-their-field environmental scientists or first year students in something unrelated
none of these surveyed scientists were weeded out on grounds of conflict of interest (e.g. scientists who stand to profit from further activities that current understanding says would contribute to increasing severity of climate change or make it harder to reverse)
the only ones contributing to that 78% group were ones who were not remotely specialised in the field and/or had a clear conflict of interest
And/or the way the question was asked and the result reported aren’t equivalent, e.g. neutral, slightly disagree and strongly disagree responses all reported as one big block of ABSOLUTELY NOT, and “do you believe climate change is happening at all” vs “have you seen signs of climate change in your area this year” vs “do you believe climate change is influenced by human activities” vs “do you believe climate change is entirely caused by human activities” vs “do you think climate change is something humans can actually do anything about” vs “do you think corporate actions to reduce climate impact make a difference” vs “do you think combating climate change should be a top priority for scientific research funding” vs “do you think combating climate change should be a top priority for your government’s agenda this year” etc. all dumbed down and lumped together as a monolithic “do you believe in climate change” by the reporter/poster.
Education in the basics of statistics and proper scientific method, and then reading the source material for any such quote with a mildly sceptical starting viewpoint (even and sometimes especially if it supports your worldview), really is important.
wands are like the smartphone of the wizard world, a slimmed and streamlined spellcasting apparatus of the modern era that has many slightly older wizards going "ugh kids these days don't know what it's like to have the sturdy weight of a Staff in your hands at all times. sure its not as portable but at least i can still use it to beat a motherfucker when im out of mana."

Animation I made as a tribute to Louis Wain, both to his art and him as a person, I hope my animations convey how comforting I find his art.

“I am happy because everyone loves me”
I don’t think we ought to normalize or justify bullying as a means to keep people from being annoying — a sentiment that in and of itself could make for a whole article’s worth of conversation — but I do think we should make a habit of politely but directly telling people “hey I didn’t like that”, “that wasn’t funny”, “you are mistaken”, and the like if it’s called for, and more importantly, you should be able to take a “that wasn’t funny” for instance without taking it personally, because protecting a polite harmony where no one can criticize each other, not even politely, is also really, really bad.
one time in college i was in a creative writing class and this guy was holding up the critique with what i can only describe as like cinemasins dinging another student's writing. and at some point the professor said "the plot is the fork and the prose is the meal. you are critiquing the taste of the fork"
