Doug Langdale: "The first show I sold on my own was The Weekenders, and I sold it to Disney. It is way too similar - unfortunately - to The Simpsons' story, in that I went in with four shows prepared, very detailed and elaborated. I pitched all of them and they were like, "Do you have anything else?" And I literally had a piece of paper that said, "Kids on the weekend" with a question mark on it. And they were like, "What would that be about?" And I f*****g bullsh*tted for half an hour... and sold the show! And the only reason I sold it was 'cause all I could do was talk about stuff that I actually did when I was a kid, so I was invested in it - so it was more interesting. [...] I used to walk around the hotels near the airport in San Diego, walk the halls and steal food off of the trades that people had put out after they had eaten their room services. Super gross. It never happened on the show..." Host: "That's like the Seinfeld episode: That's the show!" DL: "Yeah, it was really. I mean, the genesis of the show really was nothing. It was just like, let's just do a show about kids in school, but never see them in school. When I was a kid the last thing I wanted to do was watch a show about kids in school, I was in the school all the time! I don't want to see that, so it was just on the weekend." Host: "Honestly, that might be a better fantasy than a mouse and a duck going down a river with a dog? You know, I mean..." DL: "Or maybe not. People like mice, right?"
