Driving around my town trying to find one single burger just one burger or a hot dog but Unfortunately everythings just rubble and twisted scaffolding upstretched and rotting and theres shit on fire and a big black ass sky
I'm reminded of that one part in Frederick Douglass's autobiography where he gets to the north for the first time and assumed, since they didn't have slaves, that everyone was about as poor as non-slaveowning white southerners. And they weren't! There were poor people, sure, but there were lots of people living very comfortably or in luxury.
He mentions how angry it made him, that not only were thousands and thousands of people suffering to create luxury for a few, but that slavery wasn't even necessary for wealth to exist. That's really stuck with me.
screenshot of a tweet by @pot8um: “Does anyone have that recent study that determined all 8 billion of us could be easily housed and fed with only 30% of the current global labor output and that our collective suffering is manufactured by capitalism...”

“With this approach, good lives can be achieved for all without requiring large creases in total global throughput and output. Provisioning decent living standards (DLS) for 8.5 billion people would require only 30% of current global resource and energy use, leaving a substantial surplus for additional consumption, public luxury, scientific advancement, and other social investments. Such a future requires planning to” [text is cut off here].

Poverty is not an intractable problem that requires complex solutions, long timeframes and large increases in production and throughput that conflict with ecological objectives. The solution is straightforward. We need to actively plan to shift productive capacities away from capital accumulation and elite consumption in order to focus instead on the goods and services that are necessary to meet human needs and enable decent living for all, while ensuring universal access through public provisioning systems. We have framed this work around the concept of human needs, following the recent literature. However it is important to underscore that this approach is ultimately about far more than just satisfying material requirements for human well-being. Achieving decent-living for all is critical to enabling broader human capabilities, individual and collective self-realisation, full participation in society and politics and, ultimately, freedom.

text: [ “Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing an essay, writing a eulogy, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing for 5000 years.” ]
And they're absolutely specifically pushing it, make no mistake. It's not just a matter of "it's there, it's convenient, so people are going to take the path of the least resistance", but it is a legitimate and concerted effort on the part of these companies to get people to outsource all these things to their models.
They're preying on insecurities to do it. Yes, you can write an essay - but can you write a good essay, they ask you. Do you not want to improve your output? Do you not want people to think of you as competent and very clever? Why go through the mortifying process of failing and failing and failing until you succeed if you can just skip the "learning" part of doing, and simply generate a ready-made product?
I'm preaching to the choir here obviously but it's a concerning thing to witness nonetheless. My kid is 6 next week and I've been teaching her that failing at things is morally neutral and in fact necessary even before the advent of AI, but it's becoming ever more important that we teach the kids that criticism and failure and discomfort aren't necessarily bad things, but just a part of the growth process.

Hello person having transgender thoughts but convinced they aren't trans because they don't have the requisite amount of dysphoria they think they need
Hi I transitioned without even thinking I had dysphoria. Like later in hindsight I can go "oh that's probably what it was" but for the first year of my transition I was straight up like "I like being a guy but I like being a girl WAY more" and you can do that!! There is no prerequisite amount of suffering needed to make yourself happier.

if you decide to become a police officer then that outweighs any other marginalised identity you can rustle up like. not sorry, who asked you to willingly become a pig
I have heard of black people warning their kids that the race of a police officer is cop and you should not expect solidarity from them. The same applies to other types of minorities.
The sexuality of a police officer is cop.
The gender of a police officer is cop.
When you become the enforcer and protector of capital, you are making the deal to be slightly favored by the system over others like you, in exchange for being its servant. Your solidarity is with the system that you serve, even if it hates you.
If you want solidarity with those the system hates, you cannot be the system's servant and defender.
I dunno, guys
I want to become a soldier/cop when I get older, but with how many people having been hating on it, I feel like I could genuinely get more dangerous threats if I say that I genuinely went through with it and went to a Youth Cadet Academy... (which i'm about to)
It's simply conflicting, as I've dreamt of being a cop and/or a soldier since I was little and having the ultimate honour of having my two last names to wear on my chest is the honour I want to wear. But I'm not so sure on how I can do that, if my choice will cause other people to feel free enough to call me a "pig."
If I can't become a cop or a soldier, what else can I become? I don't know what else to do, as I've always wanted to prove to my family that I could do it too, that I could be like my grandpa and wear a silver medal.
I will be blunt. Those are both professions where you sign up to participate in incredible violence against mostly innocent people, with a few possibly legitimate targets for force thrown in there. But the violence you might participate in can be so extreme that it defines people's life experiences forever after - assuming they very to have a life.
That can, should, and likely will have reputational impacts for you.
But if the thought of those reputational impacts is the most striking thing for you, and not the enough of the actions you'll be expected to take against others that will *earn* the moniker "pig"? Then I think you're going about this wrong.
If you become a cop, you will be joining the most prolific armed robbery gang in the entire United States by a wide margin. Police use a technique called civil asset forfeiture to steal things from people, often including cash and vehicles, without any declaration of a crime and with a very difficult process for the victim to get it back, which they often don't. If you join the cops you are going to be expected to participate in civil asset forfeiture, or support cops who do, and you will become one of the faces of the greatest armed robbery gangs in the world, for which, yes, some people will call you pig.
And you will be expected to support all of these abuses and more, including nakedly illegal ones, because police whistleblowers are universally retaliated against. Some of them are murdered and the murderers get away with it. And there is such an enormous glut of things to whistle blow about within police forces, everything from unethical overtime practices to prisoner rights violations to coercive interrogations to sexual violence towards prisoners (especially trans prisoners) to the simple civil asset forfeiture I mentioned earlier. So if you go into that job and you come out anyway other than disgraced and with your pension stripped and you and your family threatened because you turned whistleblower, yes there are many people whom you will have earned the title of pig.
From 2000 and 2019 Cops Seized $69 Billion From People, Most of Whom Were Not Even Charged with a Crime
Whistleblower laws have advanced in public and private sectors, but protections for police who report illegal or unethical behavior lag far
In the military, a full quarter of all women soldiers and 2% of men are raped by their comrades, and this is almost entirely covered up at every level. Successful prosecution and action taken about these matters is incredibly rare. It's much more difficult to get information on the right at which US soldiers rape civilians and enemy combatants, but everywhere US soldiers are stationed there are accusations of rape and cover-ups of those rapes where US soldiers are moved out of the jurisdiction to avoid facing local justice. There's been a small handful of successful convictions over the last few years, but out of thousands of accusations and even more kept silent out of fear.
"I think the breadth and the depth of the problem is so large that they really don't want the general public to understand that they don't h
A once-secret archive, assembled by a Pentagon task force in the early 1970s, that shows that confirmed atrocities by U.S. forces in Vietnam

If you join the military it is statistical guarantee that you will be working with both ongoing rape victims and their active rapists, whether you pay enough attention to find out or not. And handling this by the books in a way that won't get you a dishonorable discharge will result in no protection and no justice.
This is without even addressing the actual violence the US performs, especially right now. I am talking about purely the moral cost of what the military demands you be cool with and what sexually violent crimes against civilians it will defend its soldiers from.
So yeah, you take those path, some people will call you a pig and spit. If you decide you want to wear those symbols with pride anyways, that's your call. But now you know why some people spit on those same symbols.

i just saw a post on reddit titled "the writer is cooking but the food doesn't agree with me" and it was about OP clicking off a fic because they don't like the direction it's going in. slightly different context but can we all be more like this reddit OP. i think "the writer is cooking but the food doesn't agree with me" should be the new "don't like don't read." dead doves may give you diarrhea but don't make that everyone else's problem.
Just watched Adam Conover (of Adam Ruins Everything) make such a solid point that I think we should spread far and wide. Yes, having AI write your emails is lazy, sure, but people love being lazy. We need to really emphasize that sending AI emails (or using AI responses on social media, or publishing AI flyers, or or or) is rude.
It's rude. You're making someone take their time to read something you couldn't bother to write. You're telling them they were so unimportant you couldn't be bothered to actually take the time to say something yourself. And frankly, you're lying about it while you're at it.
i hate viruses so fucking much. literally getting attacked by a fucking shape. a concept. consumes no energy. responds to no stimuli. its only existence is to fuck with you. like fuck offf

not to sound like a crazy sjw but parents putting little girls in frilly dresses/lavish clothes and telling them not to run, climb, play in dirt, etc lest they ruin their outfits or somebody look up their skirts is one of the most direct ways we as a society teach girls that they are only ornamental and cut their childhoods short
