you have permission to pick that 2 year old "abandoned" project back up. it's not mad at you for setting it aside. and maybe time and distance have helped ease or erase the things that made you put it down in the first place.
Okay so. I'm replaying ME after a long time and there's this,,, sort of general consensus that Kaidan is "the one who doesn't have a loyalty mission, because he has his shit together" but. not quite. I mean, you aren't wrong for thinking he does, because you, as a player, doesn't have to do a loyalty mission for him BUT there is something that nags at him and he brings it up to you if you chose to.
It's more subtle, because it's mostly through dialogue, but Kaidan IS bothered by the fact that he killed Vyrnnus and he carries is all the way to ME1, which is understandable. Anyone would be disturbed by the fact that they've lost control of their powers at the age of 17 and killed someone.
The point I'm trying to make is that Kaidan is scared of his biotics in ME1. If you prompt Kaidan to open up about his past, he will tell you about it and will insist that it's no big deal, but if you're observant, you notice that it does bother him and you can reassure him that his powers aren't a hindrance and don't make him a monster.
I mean, he was mentally and physically abused by someone who was supposed to be his teacher. (Even Shepard brings up the fact that it would've made more sense to have an asari as a teacher rather than a turian who was abusing his position of power) Which is why his "You make me feel human." line makes way more sense. You made Kaidan feel more comfortable with being a biotic and, more importantly, being himself. Kaidan might not have had a loyalty mission, but you have helped him via dialogue.
People tend to overlook his whole character arc, either because they consider him "boring" or because they make him out to be this paragon of mental health, and both of those approaches just completely ignore not just any nuance, but A LOT of Kaidan's dialogue in all three games.
Kaidan goes from avoiding using his biotics on living targets, and avoiding being recognized as a biotic by the Alliance, to actually teaching people biotics. To actually using his biotics on one of the most risky missions the Alliance has to offer.
He lets go of BAaT and Vyrnnus after Shepard's death, and his arc in ME3 continues this theme of self-acceptance. ME3 Garrus learns how to exist in the gray area of morality, ME3 Tali learns how to be a leader, ME3 Liara struggles with the legacy (her race's, her own, and her mother's), and ME3 Kaidan learns how to trust and let go and lose control and take a step into the void without fear of falling.
Kaidan is unique in the sense that Shepard both doesn't act like his mentor and doesn't have to fix any of Kaidan's problems. But that doesn't mean Kaidan has nothing to learn from their friendship. On the contrary. Both Shepard and Kaidan benefit greatly from this relationship, whether platonic or romantic. That's what's so great about it.

I couldn’t find the post I was looking for but it was about how sera gets called racist and bigoted and annoying for criticising the dalish (due to being a 20 year old dealing with internalised racism and struggling to find her identity in a world where she’s only acknowledged as an elf as a target of racism or when compared to the dalish as though she’s not being an elf properly) but when Solas criticises the dalish he’s called wise and knowledgeable and people think that yeah maybe the dalish are worth criticising (and he’s criticising them because he’s a genocidal maniac who doesn’t consider them people and is planning to kill them)
Think that’s a good example of the whole “you hate this character because she’s a woman, you would like the same traits in a male character” thing
