Interesting how in Adolescence of Utena the general aesthetic is very water themed; Utena's outfit is a sailor suit, Ohtori buildings look like the prows of ships, the rose garden dance scene is started by Anthy bursting a pipe, Touga and Utena's history with the river (+ drowning), the final elevator scene. I think when we first see people in Ohtori Academy itself, they're cleaning something because the floor is wet, and Utena is washing her face.
but in the show, the water imagery is much less prominent, and we see it mostly associated with Juri (her shower, her locket), Kozue (swimming pool and that scene where she's trying to hold the water), and to a lesser extent Nanami (cat). And the water imagery is mostly used to mark out certain character points, stages in their development, or their current mood.
I feel there is a lot to be analysed here but idk.
#that is an interesting thought#in the movie water is very death themed because of touga#and since the deadness of both touga and akio is such a big reveal and thematic point it makes sense for water to be everywhere#but that doesn't really connect to the rose platform dance scene at least not in an obvious way#in that scene the water is to reflect the night sky isn't it? and it provides a reflection of utena and anthy#in the show... i did notice that juri is mega water themed but i didnt think abt kozue and nanami#for kozue it's just that one scene where the water trickling through her hand underlines the futility of trying to hold onto the past#but with nanami its death themed again..... hmm#thats crazy i never connected the river deaths of juris sister's boy+touga in the movie with the kitten who also drowns in a river......#i just remembered the black rose arc has that basement water tank. death again (via sneakystorms)
excellent tags! and so more things i'd like to add:
water being death themed in general also draws parallels i feel with the common idea of water being life, and also religious imagery of baptism etc and holy water (and utena does have quite some religious imagery tbh)
water as death and rebirth both -- AoU feels like a new version of the old cast, but there seems to me a strong undercurrent of "the past you knew is dead" running through the movie
rose dance scene could be the idea of the death of past selves maybe, but i was also thinking about the roses which are... very red and look a Lot like blood. smth smth the duels maybe? since in AoU we don't see the duel taking much of a forefront.
also kozue in the movie and that bath scene? which i barely understood because they Did Not elaborate on it but. yeah.
kozue and water and death of her past self?
nanami IS death themed but there is still the implication that the cat escaped -- she's less death themed and more. repression themed imo. (like, literally trying to put her problems in a box.)
BLACK ROSE WEIRD ASS WATER TANK I FORGOT ABOUT THAT
also black generally used as a colour of death + the water tank + the dead duelists..... yeah idk how i didn't pick up on that earlier.
funny thing is, in the movie, idth akio drowned? maybe showing how he can't really truly die if the cycle of abuse in ohtori continues.
touga and utena first meeting being in the rain, symbolising his actual death AND the death of their past relationship at this point since utena barely remembers him.
OH MORE WATER THEME: the carwash.
carwash where utena is separated from anthy, like a death of sorts (Also vaguely paralleling the end of the series where utena is again separated from anthy. and again a form of death for someone whose life we have only seen in ohtori really) and rebirth in the. being a car stuff.
all excellent additions we're cooking fr but i've been animating for hours now and as soon as you mentioned water/life associations my sleep deprived brain brougth me back to when i read hero with a thousand faces, specifically:
Page 32, on the world navel: “the torrent pours from an invisible source, the point of entry being the center of the symbolic circle of the universe, the Immovable Spot of the Buddha Legend, around which the world may be said to revolve. (…) the tree of life, i.e., the universe itself, grows from this point. It is rooted in the supporting darkness; the golden sun bird perches on its peak; a spring, the inexhaustible well, bubbles at its foot. Or the figure may be that of a cosmic mountain, with the city of the gods, like a lotus of flight, upon its summit, and in its hollow the cities of the demons, illuminated by precious stones.”
the FRIGGIN dueling arena gate!!
there's water all over this bitch!! it makes me think of the river styx, washing away a dead person's memories and in a way marking them as truly dead and separate from the living. and also myths of vampires or other supernatural creatures being unable to cross running water. water as not just baptisinal water and not just death by water (though it is interesting that the black rose students die by fire now that i think about it) but as a boundary between life and death more broadly. obviously rgu is obsessed with transitions from one stage of life to another and the rituals that mark them. death and birth, death and rebirth. idk man...
also, some rainy scenes off the top of my head:
baby utena in the church. there's a storm with thunder and lightning
keiko's black rose episode, especially with the umbrella being her symbol
and tsuwabuki's black rose episode too! two characters connected to nanami...
#might come back to this with clearer eyes tomorrow lol because i just KNOW theres something more specific under that water-boundary thing#i just cant put my finger on it rn#something something... springs... fountains... the spring of eternal youth?#wait the spring of eternal youth........... arrested development.................#hmm.........#also thank you to empty movement slash ohtori.nu for the screenshots as always bless you guys fr#edit i just remembered that anthy caring for her roses is usually shown via her watering them... is this a stretch lol maybe
amazing tags again (and idth it's a stretch but i'll go into that later). first:
baby utena: well the coffin obvs. but ig also the "rebirth" into her ideal of the prince? and. to some extent, the start of the death of touga and saionji's childhood friendship maybe?
the umbrella seems to me to be a shield from the water -> a shield from the death present in ohtori (and ignoring it). i feel like this is a reach though.
nanami! seems to me her water imagery is about the rebirth from death,,, she's present in a lot of people's character developments
OHTORI AND THE SPRING OF ETERNAL YOUTH!! also the sort of "timeless renaissance" architecture it has that belongs to no specific era but is sprawling and ostentatious and feels like everything is in perfect stasis. nothing changes and nobody grows, which is why character development in ohtori is... strange to say the least. (ironic since water is usually the symbol of the fluid, intransient, and unchanging, but that's definitely intentional.)
also: vampires. akio seems undying, eternally young, and also metaphorically feeding off the duelists. i don't think i have an actual point for this, just wanna put it out there.
ANTHY WATERING THE ROSES!!!!!! no i don't think that's a reach -- she's caring for roses that don't actually seem to need tending. watering the duelist roses both shows how they are all dead in some way, and thus cannot change, as well as how ohtori seems to be like a whole new life for all the students (rebirth that in itself is a death) (like a cycle, because that's what the duels are. they never end.).
About a million years ago I spun a long post out of Utena using the word "kamikakushi" in one scene. Kamikakushi is the same word used in the Japanese title of Spirited Away. It means literally "hidden by the gods," but can also mean a kidnapping or a mysterious disappearance.
I won't reiterate the whole post I made before, but I'll just include a couple quotes:
“It represents a type of social death & rebirth that parallels transition into adulthood,” and that it “only happens to children and young adults already teetering on brink of change." ... The Lady Librarian’s notes also say: Gods are said to traverse back and forth between the worlds through watery portals Rivers, ponds, lakes, springs, waterfalls: all are possible doorways Water seeping out of anywhere often has a shrine in Japan
''Here I hang from the apple tree Oh, take a little bite, take a bite for me The pain, it keeps me sane For I am more than a taste''
Been talking about this with friends so I present to you, the cursed spectrum of media literacy
Added a Y axis from the notes

The really funny thing about "snakes aren't mammals your snake girl shouldn't have breasts!" is like yeah. Neither should your cat girl.
The fact that this is the line drawn is really funny! Human breasts are actually incredibly rare among mammals! We don't know exactly why humans have big bazongas but it's probably sexual selection, which presents the really funny problem
If your snake women having sex with people is normal and expected...then yeah, they're ALSO probably going to have something resembling breasts. They might even just have breasts in all but function.
Like yes, non-mammals don't make milk, but you actually don't need the whole kit that humans do in order to make milk. Arguably its not even the important part of the breast to begin with.
You also don't need to justify it at all you can just be a pervert about it.
We actually have another theory why human breasts are like that, and it's because of our flat faces.
Most mammals have, compared to humans, an elongated jaw. So a little tiny bump of a mammary gland is fine, just enough to get the nostrils away from the teat, and the young can freely breathe while nursing. However, as humans started using fire more and more to cook food - which softened it up, rendering powerful jaws less necessary - their jaws began to shorten, resulting in the development of the chin and other unique facial structures as the face flattened out.
This, of course, meant that babies could suffocate while nursing, which would obviously be bad. But what if... what if nipple further from chest? Bigger bump, so baby's nose have spot to go that isn't directly into mommy's chest? Oh, turns out that works! Of course, as more and more fat stores become dedicated to growing that breast mound to keep baby from suffocating, it becomes harder and harder for the mother to reabsorb that tissue when not nursing (as many other mammals do), so they just... don't. Knockon effects from there, and bam. Tiddies.
Which means if your cat girl has a flat face she probably should still have boobs but if she's got the full muzzle, not so much.
That's actually really interesting honestly.
All well and true, but also, cats have more nipples than humans, typically 6-8. So by this reasoning, your catgirl should have 3 or 4 pairs of breasts
Prev, I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this, but the furries already have that point covered.
I think every lesbian who says she wouldn't date a bi woman is functionally on the same wavelength as men who say they would only marry a virgin
it all boils down to "penis steals women's purity" and there's literally no non-shitty way to believe that. being gay doesn't give you a get out of jail free card for being sexist

The old world is dying. The new world had that thing happen where the umbilical cord gets caught around the neck as it's coming out, yuuuurk, no new world either. So it's basically just gonna be monsters forever
And for the last time, you can't fuck the monsters. They aren't the kind of monsters you can fuck
Had it with all this bullshit grimdark worldbuilding just for the sake of edginess with nothing to actually say. I'm going to fuck the monsters.
Listen, buddy, I get it when it's monstrosity-as-a-marker-of-marginalization or it's a, a commentary on arbitrary constructions of beauty standards or whatever. That's one type of monster, that's fine. Very fuckable type of monster. But we're talking about, like, the metaphysical worldly manifestations of imperialist warmongering and rapacious depletion of the environment and systemic racism and shit like that. And I mean it's obviously not conceptually impossible to eroticize all that, you see people doing it, but it's fraught, right? It's fraught. Thin Ice. And if you're gonna go there you can't be flippant about what you're doing, man. This shit affects people's lives in real, non-metaphorical ways. When I was at CVS I just saw three or four anthromorphic personifications of the concept of medical debt pulling a little old lady apart like a wishbone
I’m going to be fucked by the monsters
My feminism is honestly based on Mother Mary, but not like that.
What is it like?
I think the best way to open is thus: if the catechisms of the Catholic or the Orthodox Church mean a lot to you, choose whether to close your eyes or to keep reading now, because I am about to list several heresies. Suffice it to say, I did not arrive at Marian devotion in any of the traditional ways, not for the lack of trying.
I will also say that a few of these points I could have elaborated on more, but that's where we get into metaphysics and theology and so on, and I am trying to stay on topic here for once, hah.
Let's start here: She is the Immaculate Conception, but I do not see her as any more born without sin than any one of us. The original sin is an illusion, really. We do not inherit a soul in any inherent blindness to the Divine; we do very early on inherit a body of societal ideas and rituals based on a hierarchy that favours domination. This in some ways gives us hope to benefit from power, but more profoundly this is an inaccurate view of the human and natural existence, which is equal in value, cooperative, and ecosystemic. Every element in the system, at any scale, will affect its surrounding elements, and thus we can not declare any unworthy of internal betterment or external care.
Mary is the way of remembering our truth. She is the way to Heaven, which is within us.
She was not a perfect vessel simply made for the job and thus only having the capability to seriously consider her options within the range of obedience to God. I think this doctrine conceals something much more profound and probably outrageous to our mind. She was a teen girl who her entire life chose to follow the thread that connected her soul to Godhood, who actively agreed to birth a child from the feminine presence of God - fully knowing that this will be viewed as lowest of acts by everyone around her, and will very likely ruin her prospects for any life in a society at all. She was quite possibly risking her life altogether, but she chose what she believed was right and of love against people or religion.
I believe that the birth of Yeshua was in a big part meant to be a story of restoration of a healthy masculinity and the proper relationship to the feminine, a reminder that we all have an equal nature beyond the incarnate world. Did not work very well, but that's a separate story.
Mary's work is the work of our worth and our calling to care, and she is here to guide us in both, healing hearts that were thought hopeless, helping the prosecuted, reminding us that life is less like a patriarchal race to the top, and more like the circle of her rosary, with its ups and downs and death and rebirth and many, many, miracles and supporting hands. Or that's what it is supposed to be, anyway.
And once this is understood, I believe it is impossible to not work for the rights of women, including their right to exercise their free will even if we would have chosen otherwise, their right to safety from cruelty, their right to be respected and valued and given opportunity.
Now, patriarchy rewards one's proximity to the masculine ideal instead of true emotional, intellectual, or practical contribution. This is why it paints the ideal woman not as a free agent but as an accessory and the supporting hand to the masculine. It also disadvantages queer people as threatening to the hierarchy.
Our world being what it is, this work does mean healing all of our relationships with and restoring the proper value of what we identify as feminine in ourselves and others. If you are seen as a man, you are trained to not do what women are believed to do. If you are seen as a woman, you are trained to both not do what men are believed to do, and what is exemplified as the frowned upon womanhood.
To me, this is the reason Mary and her son show up where the Church turns away, to its chagrin. It by and large preaches structures of power that are simply irrelevant in the world as it should be.
Thank you for taking the time to give me such a good answer. I grew up going to the Lutheran church, which doesn't have a lot of time for Mary, and I haven't gone to any church in a very long time. But I still feel fascinated by Mary.
So many things would be better if doctors could just say “yeah that is a real problem but there isn’t much we can do to treat it so our only real recommendations are other things that raise your general health level to compensate”
instead they just say “thats normal” or “oh theres nothing wrong with you”. Because in their mind “it wont kill you and i cant fix it” means its not worth mentioning.
Affirm the problem doc, it wont kill you. Knowing that something just isnt the kind of thing doctors treat will save your patients so much time, money, and stress, all of which will improve their health.
I was going to link to that essay about how med school beats this out of doctors, complete with clinically diagnosable PTSD in 20-40% of doctors depending on field.
But then I went to collect the link on duckduckgo since I don't have my bookmarks at work, and oh god, there's actually thousands of these essays, and even studies now.
So uh. I'll synthesize a bit here:
Doctors need to stop doing this, yes. But for that to happen, med school has to stop punishing this with public humiliations, residency has to stop punishing this with extra shifts, and employers have to stop firing doctors who admit this for "malpractice liability."
The individual doctors sending their patients home ignorant and afraid are the last leg in a long chain, basically.
very silly fancomic project i made in a sort of frenzied love inbetween work. I wanted to get back to something i loved as a kid since it's FF, so I was very inspired by the aesthetics and mannerisms of 90s doujinshi. Tried to follow that as far as I could, using g-pen and borrowing a tiny screentone from a friend, as well as making the cover in pale yellowish copics and ink. Only the text is digital... It's fun to get back to just creating goofy stuff with your hands, even if the result is very wonky. i didn't storyboard it or anything, so it just kinda goes with the flow. but i hope it's fun!
