Day 17 – We All Make Mistakes: Injury while cooking / Soft wound tending / "Let me take care of you this time."
Care
Medic was busy in the infirmary and had noticed a shadow at the door for quite some time. He knew who sneaked in the hallway, but wanted to wait, till that person said something without being prompted to do so.
It took another 20 minutes till the shadow dared to show himself in the doorframe and tried to clear his throat as quietly as possible. Medic had his back turned, but had to smile for himself, because he was glad, that Youngest finally had the courage to speak up.
Youngest was nearly a month here, but he was still very reserved to sometimes even fearful of all of them. If he needed something he would usually search out Leader. Medic interpreted it as a good sign that he came here.
“Medic?” Youngest spoke in that moment, very quietly and reserved. The addressed turned around, gave him a well-meant smile and answered: “Yeah, I am here. Nice of you to come visit me. Can I help you with anything?”
Youngest shuffled with his feed on the ground and didn’t even look at him as he faintly whispered: “I.. I am sorry to bother you, Mr. Medic. But Leader said to come to you if I am hurt…”
Now that got Medics attention and he went full business mode. He instantly wanted to go over to Youngest, but the boy instantly made a few steps backwards. Medic stopped his advance and held his hands up. “I am sorry, I didn’t want to scare you. Where are you hurt?”
Youngest still looked at the ground while answering: “I.. I was stupid… I burned my hand in the kitchen…”
Medic really wanted to ask him, why he didn’t say so earlier, but he didn’t want to drive the boy away. So instead he said to him: “No worries, that happens to all of us. Can I take a look?”
Without saying anything, Youngest stretched his arm in Medics direction, without wanting to move any nearer. Medic approached cautiously, taking utmost care to not move too suddenly as if he had to treat a hurt animal.
Carefully he took Youngest’s hand in his own and looked at the burn. It did look bad but nothing he couldn’t cure with time and salve. “Thanks for letting me have a look. I will put some salve on it and put a bandage on, if that’s fine with you.”
He explained everything in detail as he worked, keeping up a constant chatter, so Youngest had something other than the pain to concentrate on. At the same time he took utmost care to keep his touches as light and soft as possible.
And as Medic looked in Youngest’s eyes, he thought he saw some tears sparkling. Not from the pain, but because the boy wasn’t used to being cared for. Something that Medic was determined to change with time.

Post whump Whumpee runs a whump blog. They use their experiences as prompts and use their feelings for description. Due to that incredibly detailed and accurate writing, their blog is very well known. If anyone ever asks them how they’re so good at writing whump they just say they study things related to it.
Despite all their popularity they never write anything about recovery or caretakers. They don’t know how to describe it because they never had a caretaker. They managed to make it out of whumper’s clutches but they never made it out of the clutches of loneliness.
prisoner who made some assumptions about the treatment they're getting. based on past experience.
cw: fear of noncon, implied past noncon, military whump <- incredibly tame and self indulgent i am just being careful with tags.
A guard comes to wake him up in the middle of the night and Marcus feels a perfect mix of relief and annoyance. Their prisoner – Otis –has finally asked for medical assistance, which is why he’s traversing the whole camp at this ungodly hour. He mostly wonders why the man couldn’t do this either way earlier, or in six to seven hours.
He has to go all the way to the infirmary, pick up the basics, and then all the other way to the tent they’ve given him. The guard barely look up as he enters, saluting purely on instincts.
Hesitant, fearful eyes meet his when he enters, and Marcus raises the lantern.
“It’s just me. You… asked for me?” He raises the basket of bandages and salves he’s dragged through the whole camp for this.
The man nods almost shyly, shuffling a little closer. His voice is soft when he apologises, “I… forgive me if I disturbed your sleep, I thought-” His expression stutters for a moment; he bites his lips and it settles on something blank. “I thought you might prefer doing this during the night.”
Marcus would have preferred sleep, and much preferred having some boring report interrupted. He understands, however – there are only so many things you can be accused of doing when meeting an enemy soldier in the middle of the night. He waves the apology away. “No matter. Though, I’ll warn you, I’m not a doctor. Anything too serious and I’ll have to call for medical, alright?”
He gets only a nod in response and moves forward slowly. Otis obviously knows what wounds he has, but every one of his moves is hesitant. He starts to take off his shirt, eyes darting between Marcus and the floor. The commander tries to be reassuring. “Nothing to be ashamed of, hmm? Nothing I haven’t seen before.”
Except it’s a soldier of the Empire and a commander from the kingdom trying to rebel, and that – shockingly – Marcus doesn’t usually see his soldiers half naked in the middle of the night to treat their wounds.
Otis lies down, twisting slightly to his side. He keeps his legs pressed together, knees bent just slightly.
With the shirt off, the wound that probably made Otis call for him is immediately apparent. There are- bruises, welts Marcus can’t begin to guess the origin of, small burns on the soldier’s arms.
Also. A truly gigantic, gaping, cut on the side of his chest. Crusted blood around and below it where it probably dripped for days, and a redness that suggests infection.
Marcus squints at the wound. He wets a cloth, gently wiping the blood away. The wound looks slightly better without its halo of blood, so he keeps going.
“Did you call because you felt it getting infected?”
Another shy, hesitant nod in response. “That’s good. We can’t have you dying, what would the emperor say.”
The joke doesn’t land with a loyal soldier of said emperor. Otis looks at him with – still – those wide, scared eyes of his, looking for all the world like he expects lighting to strike them down right this instant. Marcus forces a smile, muttering an apology.
He reaches for his basket, leaning over Otis. His fingers brush – accidentally, very slightly, barely – the top of the soldier’s thigh.
Immediately the man goes slack, legs skating apart in a move too precise to be mistaken. His eyes close, as well, and Marcus forces himself still. He takes a deep, silent breath, and forces himself to exhale slowly.
“Otis?”
“Sir?” Anxiety. Confusion Marcus doesn’t want to think about.
“That’s not going to happen.”
Otis makes a sound of realisation before moving again. His eyes open, dart up for just an instant, and then he grimaces as he twists his wound to get himself to his knees.
Marcus still hasn’t moved. He swallows, suddenly feeling very cold. He tries to wet his lips.
“Who- Did someone in this camp made you....”
Otis shakes his head, not meeting his eyes. He almost sounds reassuring when he adds, “Your soldiers are very disciplined, sir. They wouldn’t. They respect you.”
Which has nothing to do with not assaulting their prisoner. Should have nothing to do with not assaulting their prisoner. Marcus sighs, gently pushing Otis down so he stops worsening his already terrible wound.
“Would you- After, sir?”
“Never. God, I’m not going to- Why would you think-”
Marcus bites his tongue, forcing himself to focus on the wound in front of him. Otis doesn’t speak while he composes himself, and he loathes the knowledge that it’s out of fear. Ignorance truly is bliss.
“I don’t know if this is… What you were told about us,” Propaganda. “Or if prisoners in the empire are… mistreated” which he can’t think about because he happens to have friends in imperial prisons, “but I don’t do that. We don’t do that.”
He looks up slightly, meeting Otis’s scared but attentive eyes. He tries to force a smile. “There is… an accord, actually. The emperor signed it but. Well. He’s never respected anything, has he?” He shakes his head before Otis can recite another rote, inane speech about his fucking emperor. “Don’t answer that. It- It’s about how to treat prisoners. Among other things. Says you’re not supposed to rape them.”
He watches Otis swallow, head tilting to the side. Good to know enemy soldiers don’t know about the laws regarding war prisoners. Reassuring.
“But… I thought I had your favour, sir. And that’s why you- why I had all these luxuries.”
Marcus blinks. Once, twice. Remembers to breathe.
“…Luxuries?” He almost chokes on the word, eyes quickly scanning the tent. It’s decent – because basic humane treatment of prisoners – but no one in their right mind would call it luxurious.
Otis swallows again. Marcus would hate to see humiliation or shame on the soldier’s face but the fear he sees there sends another pang of discomfort through his gut. He can’t imagine Otis is an exception to the norm.
The soldier won’t meet his eyes.
“The- the meals? And the- water for cleaning,” biting his lips, “the blanket?”
Marcus sits back on his haunches, because he needs something solid under him while his mind collapses. He closes his eyes, pinches the bridge of his nose.
“Those are…luxuries? Food, basic hygiene and…” he clears his throat, “a blanket?”
Otis is looking at him with fear again, in the same position Marcus manhandled him a minute ago, and he kind of feels like marching all the way to the imperial camp and blowing it up. “You don’t… provide those to prisoners?”
The soldier shakes his head, hesitates. “His Exalted Majesty, in His infinite Grace provides… the necessities. But, sir, I meant… I received a lot of food. And the water was warm. And a blanket isn’t-” he bites his lips, like realising pointing out the blanket isn’t necessary will make it disappear.
“Those are things prisoners only get when… they’ve… gained the favour of an officer?” It’s a very specific turn of phrase, isn’t it. He watches Otis’s eyes dart up as the soldier butchers his lips, and a very bad feeling forms in his chest. There’s a bit of confusion in there as the man nods, and Marcus doesn’t want to ask his next question.
But he’s still an officer of the crown, and getting information from prisoners is part of his duties.
“Is it… similar for soldiers?”
Otis’s nod is much less confused, something almost like relief in there – like getting an answer he finally knows the answer to. He hesitates, speaking almost like a confession.
“It- It shouldn’t happen with prisoners, really. Soldiers earn luxuries, but the code says-” maybe he sees something in Marcus’s expression because he suddenly stops talking.
“But- I-” he has to swallow a few times to get the words out, and Marcus feels physically ill. “I know how to be grateful, sir, I- I genuinely mean to thank you for the- everything you’ve… granted me.”
Like the blanket. And adequate quantities of food. Marcus doesn’t look away from the tear in the tent he probably created with his glare, jaw clenched so hard he worries Otis can hear it grind.
“I’m not the one you have to thank for that, actually.”
Otis looks up sharply with an expression of pure terror and he curses himself for ruining the… thing they had. “-the accord. I meant the accord. Medical treatment and human decency and dignity and all that.”
It’s such a mess. He’ll have so many things to report. He blinks a few times, forces down all the dark, huge feelings trying to claw their ways out of his chest.
“Why did you think… What have I done to make you think…” he can’t say it. “Besides the… gifts, I mean.”
Otis’s eyes dart up to meet his and- oh joy, there’s a bit of disbelief in them.
“You hand-fed me, sir.”
Marcus turns to look at the soldier incredulously. Firstly, there had been a spoon involved, he was sure, then-
“Your hands were bound. Was I supposed to let you, what,” he doesn’t want to finish the sentence but the eyes that meet his are wide and expectant and hesitant in a way that rattle him.
“I wouldn’t make you eat on the floor with only your mouth, like some sort of- of dog.” Otis looks at him with scepticism and Marcus swallows past the lump that just appeared in his throat.
“Otis. That’s… inhumane treatment. The goal isn’t to be cruel.” Otis shakes his head in a way that feels almost instinctive.
“I’m a prisoner, sir. For the security of the camp, anything goes.” Another rote, repeated sentence. Soon he’ll know every mantra the empire beats into their soldier. How wonderful.
“Right.”
Otis looks up at him again. “And… you spent a lot of time with me, sir. Taking care of prisoners is… It’s not for officers.”
“I’m the only one in the camp who speaks your tongue. And… protocols indicate officers should deal with prisoners to limit… retaliation.”
The soldier’s mouth make a little ‘o’ in realisation and Marcus once more feels the urge to blow up the empire and everyone with a shred of power in it.
“I assumed your men were being respectful, sir.”
Because he had claimed the prisoner. Of course. Of fucking course.
“Right.” He clears his throat. Somehow, he’s managed to finish dealing with the wound while fighting through this crisis. “Any other grievous wound?” He even manages to fish out a smile.
Otis shakes his head quietly, looking at him in awe when he hands out a painkiller. Marcus stalks all the way back to his bed.
i think “whumpee” and “caretaker” being considered as two separate roles is an absolute lie and a scam
what do you MEAN your caretaker isn’t just another whumpee in disguise who’s only hiding their feelings so they don’t worry anyone? pretending to be okay and to be handling things well, but still burdened by whatever whumper’s done to them both?
what DO you MEAN that your caretaker and whumpee don’t get worried sick at each other getting the slightest injuries or illnesses or, god forbid, when they genuinely see each other on death’s door? they’re not eternally taking turns barely escaping from certain death because they can’t be without each other? constantly making promises that they’ll never leave again only to be forcefully torn away from each other yet again?

Thank you so much for this ask!! I really enjoyed writing this =D
CW: Torture, stabbing, beating, electrocution, forced to hurt
Teammate had been undercover for a month now. Slowly gaining the other side’s trust hadn’t been easy, but they’d done it. They’d been accepted into the inner circle and were slowly gathering tidbits of information to send back to HQ little by little. They had by no means relaxed, but they had grown used to the routine they had developed here. Until today.
Villain had pulled them into their office, a glint of excitement in their eye that Teammate hadn’t seen before. A flicker of unease unfurled in their gut.
“Morning, Teammate.”
“Morning, sir,” Teammate replied with the usual response.
“You’ve been with us a while now, right? About a month?”
“Correct, sir.”
Villain smiled. “You’ve done a lot of good for us in that time.”
“Thank you, sir.”
Where was this going?
“So,” Villain continued, “I have a little surprise for you. A small reward for your efforts. Follow me.”
And with that, Villain set off down the corridor, Teammate hurrying behind them, wondering what the hell this “surprise” could be.
The pair arrived at a row of cells a few minutes later, and Villain unlocked one to reveal a figure restrained to a chair bolted to the floor. Teammate froze.
It was Leader. Teammate had to force themself not to flinch back as Villain led them into the cell. No, no, this couldn’t be happening. How had this happened? What was going on back at HQ? Teammate swallowed, steeling their expression as Leader looked up to meet their gaze. Villain stopped behind the chair Leader was strapped to, watching Teammate.
“We capture this lowlife trying to hack into the mainframe. It was easy to track the signal back to their base; someone doesn’t know how to cover their tracks,” they finished with a grin, cupping Leader’s jaw condescendingly. As Leader growled in response, Teammate’s mind raced to make sense of the situation. Leader wasn’t the type to make silly mistakes like that. Were they here on purpose?
Teammate was snapped out of their train of thought as Villain turned to address them.
“They’re the leader of our biggest rival,” Villain continued (like Teammate didn’t know), “they have valuable information that could help us infinitely. So, as a little gift, I thought I’d let you question them.”
Teammate’s blood turned to ice. When Villain said question, they didn’t mean question. They meant torture, and Villain would stop at nothing to get answers. And now they were expecting Teammate to do the same — to Leader. They couldn’t do it. They felt their stomach roll at the very thought, but one look at Villain’s face told them this wasn’t an optional task. Glancing at Leader’s face only made them feel worse. There was a resignation there, a simple flicker of the eyes telling Teammate, “Do what you have to. It’s okay.” Even though it was anything but.
Nevertheless, Teammate put a lid on their emotions and turned to Villain. Breaking character now would only make everything worse. They could get through this. They could.
“Thank you, sir. It means a lot to me that you trust me to deal with scum like this.”
Villain flashed their teeth in response.
“Of course, Teammate. Now, don’t let me stop you,” they replied, stepping away from leader and retreating to a corner. Watching. Waiting. Testing.
Teammate hesitated for a fraction of a second, before pulling out the serrated hunting knife hanging at their belt, and circling the chair Leader was bound to.
“This doesn’t have to be painful.”
But it will be.
“You know what we want.”
Please don’t give in.
“By the time I’m finished you’ll be begging to talk.”
I’m sorry.
Leader glared at them with such venom and hatred that Teammate almost stepped back.
“Fuck. You,” they spat. Teammate didn’t hesitate. If they had done, they would have bottled it. They buried the knife under Leader’s ribs and twisted. Leader groaned in pain, facing their jaw to close and trap the scream begging to be let out. Teammate could feel the tremors as they slowly dragged the knife out, shredding the flesh around the wound even more.
“How many people are in your organisation?” Teammate barked, and they noticed Villain smile.
An hour passed like that, Teammate swapping between the knife and just their fists in an attempt to reduce the amount of blood Leader lost — though it didn’t seem to be working. Leader was still spitting insult after insult, though they were growing less and less frequent now.
You stubborn idiot, Teammate thought with a mix of anguish and admiration. They knew Leader wouldn’t hold any of this against them once this was all over. If anything, that was the worst part. Guilt ate away at them with every blow, knowing their strong, reliable leader didn’t deserve this. They slowed slightly, praying that Villain was satisfied as they stepped forward towards Teammate.
“Perhaps it’s time for a different tactic,” Villain hummed, and walked out of the door, closing and locking it behind them.
Teammate didn’t dare relax, but took the moment to look over Leader properly. They weren’t doing so well. Their hands were clenched tight around the chair’s arms, muscles straining against their restraints, and their head had dipped forward, gaze flickering. Teammate had tried to target places that wouldn’t leave excessive scarring, but with the amount of blood pouring from Leader’s body they couldn’t help but feel despicable for what they’d done. Suddenly the door re-opened, and Teammate jumped as Villain walked back in and handed them a long black device with a switch at one end. A cattle prod.
Teammate looked to Villain, speechless. Villain nodded encouragingly.
“Don’t worry, it won’t kill them. Might make them rethink their silence though,” they added with a smirk.
Teammate turned back to Leader, whispering a silent apology as they touched the device to Leader’s stomach, and switched it on.
And Leader screamed.
Three days. It had been three days of this, this hell Teammate was putting Leader through. Yet Leader still hadn’t broken. They shook and screamed their throat raw, but they never broke. So that morning, Teammate no longer wished for forgiveness, or for Villain to get bored. They wished Leader would give in. They didn’t care about the cost. They didn’t care that they were being selfish. They couldn’t handle much more of this.
Teammate entered the cell with the same steeled expression that had been fixed to their face since this all started. They nodded to Villain, as usual. They walked over to pick up the cattle prod, as usual. They approached Leader, as usual. And for the first time, Leader flinched.
Teammate nearly broke there and then. A sense of grief washed over them as they realised that whatever happened after this, no matter whether they escaped, or completed their mission — their relationship with Leader would never be the same.
Still, they pushed their feelings down and got on with the task, as usual.
Until Villain held up a hand, listening to something in their earpiece. They nodded twice at whatever information was being passed on, then started to smile. They looked to Teammate.
“Well done, Teammate, but I think that will be all. Some new information has come to light.”
Teammate felt their knees weaken with relief and fought hard to keep a composed exterior. They didn’t think about why Villain was stopping; frankly they didn’t care. All they cared about was Leader, finally getting to stop hurting.
“Yes, sir.”
Villain nodded.
“Yes. We have no need for this asset anymore, and clearly they’re of no further use to us anyway, so I think it’s time we move on. So I just have one last task for you.”
“Yes, sir?” Teammate inquired, unsure where this was headed.
- sprawled exhausted and limp on a muddy riverbank, arms and legs splayed limply out and draggled hair half-covering their face, coughing uncontrollably under the frantic helping hands of a friend
- back against the wall, shoulders heaving for breath, clenched jaw and shaking knees; a sword loosely gripped in one hand, point trailing on the ground, and blood dripping fast and faster onto the cobblestones
- blue-gray lips and shaking hands, clutching at snow-crusted clothing, clumsy numb feet stumbling over hidden roots and rocks, eyes fixed on the entrancing firelight in the distance as the wind gusts grow stronger
- a vial of medicine half-full, a cup and spoon on the table, half-open window curtains letting in the fresh daylight, tangled bedcovers around a restless feverish body, someone kneeling on the floor blinking back sleep with a worried frown on their face
- tucking a pillow under their head as the tremors start again and strengthen into another fit of convulsions, sitting back breathless and waiting, counting the moments till they lie still again; smoothing back tousled hair from a sweaty forehead when it’s over, giving another spoonful of an antidote you’ve almost stopped believing in, ever so gently drying spilled drops from over-sensitive skin and waiting and hoping for a change for the better

This is inspired by that post that talks about how whip scars are cool because they’re so intentional, I love scars that are obviously left with intent, scars that could only come about from the effort of someone, whether that be the person themself or an abuser, cigarette burns, knife cuts, brands, the types of marks that clearly say that someone decided to hurt them and meant it
Shout-out to characters who don't plan to survive their stories! Heroes who think they can only atone for their failures through sacrifice, villains who don't think they deserve to live in the world they're trying to create. Gimme that passive suicidality baby, mm-mm, delicious.
you reeeeally want your handlers to view the living weapon as exempt from moral consideration so they don't feel guilty about how it's treated (including its existence, devoid of autonomy and humanity, in the first place), but you also reeeeeally want them to displace their own blame onto it, the instrument who physically carried out their orders, so that they can order things done which they otherwise couldn't stomach. right? don't worry about it <3
black whumpees. black whumpees who were raised in a lab/living weapon facility/something to that effect and never had anyone teach them how to take care of their hair and always just had it roughly untangled with no regard for their pain meeting caretaker (also black) who knows how to do wonderful cornrows in whimsical patterns and softly comb their hair with more gentleness than they've ever known before. black whumpees with a creepy whumper who thinks their eyes—dark as the night, just as deep, just as starry, just as infinite—are the most beautiful thing on the world. black pet whumpee with a godawful no-good whumper who forces them to speak "proper" (= standard english or their setting's equivalent, whumper's definition of unproper being AAVE/ebonics) and who finally finds a safe space to let go and speak normally during recovery. black whumpee who got their hair forcefully cut/shaved in captivity getting to wear bright, beautiful extensions and braids to try and make up for what was lost, now that they have the freedom to. black whumpee snatched up and raised in captivity and isolated from their culture being tended to by a community who helps them reconnect with the lost time, good food making them tear up with nostalgia longing for a time they barely remember existed.
black whumpees in all shades of skin from bronze terracota to the deepest mahogany & with all kinds of hair from a curly cloud of sheep's wool to a fluffy, looser kind of curls & black whumpees in all shapes & sizes & all kinds of gender and sexuality or lack thereof & as robots and fairies and angels and vampires from all kinds of backgrounds & with all kinds of trauma. yes please.

A character who's been shot is captured by enemies/bad guys. They're bleeding badly, and their captors need them alive. The bullet is removed, and the wound is poured with alcohol and bandaged tightly - none of it is done gently, and, being tied up (and maybe gagged), they can do nothing but scream and cry out in pain while enduring the rough treatment.
Threatening whumpee with a raised backhand if they don't stop screaming
"Fucking hold---still."
Cold efficiency as their wound is opened to remove the bullet and they scream, biting down on the gag as hard as they can
Or worse, jabbing in pincers to remove it roughly, smirking at whumpee's cries
Gagging whumpee because they are screaming, and whumpee begins to whimper pleas that they will be quiet
Whumpee that doesn't want to show weakness to the enemy so they try to take it all stoically but they can't hold back the grunts of pain and the trembling and flinching as they are tended to
Ooooo forced to kneel, in whatever context you'd like! For the ask game :D
I didn’t mean to leave this one in the inbox for two months but I finally had a suitable idea! This is set some years in the future of FHK (relationship status spoiler warning tho), and may never be canon but was fun to write!
Content: forced to kneel, forced to watch, defiant whumpees, royal whump, medieval whump, whipping whump
The iron of the collar was rough and heavy, a far cry from the pointed brass of years before. Yet the feel of it even now made Cinn wish to weep and fight and flee.
Worse yet, a collar to match his own lay around the neck of his beloved Maira, held facing him. Their captors seized their shoulders, tough boots kicking the backs of their knees and forcing them to kneel.
Cinn winced as his knees hit the cold ground. His wrists were chained before him, the weight of the manacles causing the old injury in his shoulder to ache. Maira kept her chin up, eyes gleaming with furious defiance and fixed on his.
The leader unfurled a large whip and Cinn’s stomach dropped.
“One lash for every month of unpaid tribute. If the king here collapses before the count is done, I shall take the remainder from the flesh of his bride. Until then, she shall count. Each missed count will be dealt again.”
Maira’s eyes flashed with fear, and Cinn swallowed hard. Seven years and a season… that was many tens of months.
But he could not let them take payment in her blood.
He gave her a small nod.
Maira’s lips thinned and her nostrils flared. He knew she did not want him to bear this all himself. If only he came out of this with further scars, she would be furious at him as well as their captors.
But he could not watch them harm her.
CRACK!
His whole body flinched at the sound. A line of pain tore across his back. He had forgotten how much it hurt.
“One!” Maira choked out the number.
Again and again, the blows fell. He could feel the blood streaming down his sides, staining his trousers.
By the time they had reached forty, each blow sent him slumping to the floor. He pushed himself back up to kneel tall.
CRACK!
His body lurched with agony and he barely caught himself with his chained hands.
He had to rise.
Cinn shoved off the ground, resuming the kneeling position.
CRACK!
Again he fell.
Again he forced himself up once more.
CRACK!
He could barely hear Maira’s sobbing count. He wanted to reassure her, but the world had narrowed to the blinding pain of the whip and forcing himself to rise from the ground.
How many had it been?
His arms shook, muscles turned to jelly. He could not get them under him, could not rise.
He had to.
Had to…
Iron dug into his throat as he was dragged back up by the collar. Their captor grinned.
“Seventy-one. A brave showing, but not quite enough.”
He could not quite process what the man meant until he saw rough hands tear open the back of Maira’s dress. A whip rose above her.
He pulled against his bonds, the collar choking him as it held him upright. “NO!”
———
CRACK!
Maira’s body jerked as the whip struck. She clenched her jaw, biting back a scream. The pain was worse than she had imagined, ripping to the core of her with agony.
Forcing her eyes open, she met her husband’s anguished gaze.
CRACK!
She bared her teeth, glaring at the man holding Cinn’s chains. Tears streamed down his face.
CRACK!
A choked cry forced itself past her teeth.
No!
