It's friendship time

as i gained one or two english followers through the participation of the wonderful Whumperless Whump Event 2026 from seth-whumps, i thought i will make a very short introduction post.

My name is Moony, i am in my 30s, and a mom with regretting motherhood that nevertheless will get a second child in September... crazy me. I am have a PhD in engineering and am writing fanfics since forever. I usually love everything hurt/comfort with focus on the comfort. The shipping you will find from my side is usually friendshipping, because I value platonic relationships a great deal. So my thing is friendship in all forms and mentor/mentee relationships.

I post and write in German most of the time, so I am sorry if you cannot understand everything that is happening here. I hope I can try to tag everything accordingly.

I have written for some fandoms, and if I write generic chars I usually have some of them in the back of my mind.

Day 31 – With a Little Help (From My Friends): Waking a caretaker for help / Delirious confession / "Why didn't you say something?"

Note: The last day. Omg. I am so proud of myself for finishing this challenge. I have never participated in such an event before. And I never thought I will get it done, to write every evening for a month with only 2-3 hours a day, to have the idea, write and edit it. So I know there are many errors, i will hopefully find in the future. Thanks so much for following my little dream team all the way <3 I will make a masterlist post in the next days and one to sort the stories chronologically. This story is the continuation of Day 13.

Reassurance

Gently Leader laid Youngest down on the bed of the infirmary, while making sure that his head was supported. As he got him into a comfortable position, he then took the time to softly brush Youngest’s hair out of his face, while feeling the temperature on his forehead.

As Medic had said, the boy was burning up again. And Leader just stood there in thoughts for a moment, his hand moving from Youngest’s forehead to his cheek. The boy looked so much younger than usually, Leader realised. The contrast was really noticeable. As Youngest was one - if not the best fighter in his team despite his youth, it was easy to forget that he wasn’t even an adult now. But this reminded him full force.

While he was in thoughts, he felt Medics hand softly on his shoulder bringing him back to reality. Softly Medic spoke, “He will be fine… he just asked too much too early of his weakened body. Let me take over here.”

Leader just nodded solemnly. As he lifted his hand from Youngest’s face, the boy started moving restlessly and mumbled weakly, “No… please… don’t… don’t leave me…” Leader knew it was just the fever talking, and he trusted Medic to take good care of Youngest, so he turned to leave.

But Youngest became even more restless, trashing around so Medic couldn’t really work. And Youngest’s slurred mumbling stopped Leader as he heard his own name, “L-Leader… I’m sorry… I promise… I will be useful… please… don’t… don’t kick me out.”

While he heard those words Leader turned around. How did the boy get those ideas? He knew that Youngest was often insecure of his place in the team, but he just didn’t know why and how he could convince him, that it was completely unnecessary.

Leader hated showing emotions, but Medic knew him well enough, that he already knew he cared a big deal especially for Youngest. So he stepped back to the bed and put his hand back on Youngest head, who stopped his moving around instantly, but still murmured, “don’t… wanna.. dis… disappoint you…”

“You won’t disappoint me, Youngest,” Leader tried to hush the boy, who stilled and looked at Leader with half lidded eyes that were glazed over with fever. He kept talking to give Medic some time to work, “Nobody will kick you out. You are doing great, try to hold still now.”

That gave Medic the time to insert an intravenous line to get some fluids into the boy and to give him something to make him sleep. Youngest was so focused on Leader’s presence that he didn’t realised what was happening. And while the drug pulled the boy under Leader cupped Youngest’s cheek and whispered in his ear, “I am so proud of you, my boy.”

Day 30 – Don't Lose Your Head: Inexperienced caretaker / Severe concussion / "I don't know what to do."

Note: This it getting hard :D It is really interesting how some prompts where I thought they would be easy make me work really hard (like this one). And some seemes so hard and made the best fics (probably not this one, haha).

What to do?

Everything happened faster than he could process. One minute Leader and Youngest made their way along a ravine while the rain was streaming heavily down on them. And in the next second there was a lot of noise and suddenly Youngest found himself standing alone on top of the small path.

Slightly panicky he looked down, where a small landslide had apparently taken Leader down with it. “Leader?!” Youngest cried out hoping for an answer, but he didn’t get one. So he slowly made his way down into the ravine. He had to go slow, because he didn’t want so cause any further dirt going down and it still rained heavily.

All the way he was really scared of what he would find at the bottom. Thoughts running through his head, what if Leader was dead? What would he do, where would he go? And how should he explain this to the team? It couldn’t be. Leader was the first to ever treat him with respect. To help him without expecting something in exchange. He couldn’t lose him…

Youngest felt the tears pressing against his eyes, but he didn’t let them escape. He had to stay focussed if he wanted to make it down there. For a short moment he stopped, closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Exactly as Leader taught him to do in these situations. He had to honour the training he received.

A little bit more calm and focussed he reached the bottom. And it didn’t take him long to find Leader at the edge of the landslide, where it had come to a stop. As fast as he could he closed the last distance between them. Leader looked like someone threw a doll onto the ground, only that he was partly covered by the dirt.

Youngest knelt down beside him, and the first thing that came to his mind was pressing two fingers to Leaders neck. Please. Was the only thought on him mind while he searched for the correct position to find a pulse. He has never done this before, his fingers trembling, but the relief as he felt the thumping of Leader’s pulse was immeasurable.

Careful he pushed the dirt from Leader and slowly moved him onto his back, while trying to rouse him, “Leader? Leader, can you hear me?” As he got no reaction, Youngest then began to shrug out of his jacket to fold it up and lay in under Leaders head.

Afterwards he checked if Leader was bleeding anywhere, that he could see. Praying that nothing internal was killing his mentor at this moment. The first thing he found was the laceration on Leader’s head. This had to be the reason that Leader was unconscious. He didn’t find other bleeding wounds, but he was unsure, whether Leaders right arm was broken.

But he didn’t really know what to do now. So he took a bandage out of the small emergency kit that Medic made them all carry and tried to bind Leader’s head wound as well as he could. Afterwards he didn’t know any further, so he just sat behind him and pulled Leader’s back against his chest, maybe that would help with the bleeding on the head? Youngest didn’t know.

He firmly intended to pester Medic after this to teach him all the field medic stuff. So that he would never feel this helpless ever again if his friends got hurt.

 “Leader? Can you hear me? Please wake up… I… I don't know what to do." He murmured just holding Leader against his chest. Hoping the team would start to search for them, if they didn’t make it to the meeting point on time.

Day 29 – Too Hot (Hot Damn): Wildfire / Heatstroke / "This isn't how I thought tonight would go."

Note: Just a short one today, I thought... yeah no :D This is the story of what happened before the entry from Day 9, if you want to read that after this :D

The Rescue

Leader tried to get a good overview about the situation. The wildfire was out of control and the village was in dire need of help to be evacuated. So Leader had taken Youngest with him to aid where they could. But as the village was taken over by chaos he lost track of Youngest, both of them helping where they could.

The houses in this row were already burning, but still there were people running around trying unnecessarily to save things. That people risked their live for material things was not something that Leader could understand at all. It made the risk for all of them so much higher.

Suddenly he heard the complete scared cry of a mother, “Marie, no!!” Leader turned to see the woman standing before a burning house, where parts of the roof where already caved in and started to make his way over to her.

In that moment a little girl that couldn’t be older than four or five came running out of the burning house, clutching a teddy bear, her hairs full of soot and grime. She flung herself into the arms of her mom, crying, “Mom! Mom! The boy….” She tried to get her mom move back into the house, but she wanted to have none of it.

Leader came to stand next to them, his heartbeat already rising in dread as he asked urgently, “What boy? Is there still someone in there?” The woman tried to explain to him, “There was a really young man that…” But her daughter interrupted her instantly, “Mom! We have to help him! He saved me… but… he was not moving anymore…”

Leader had heard enough. His heart was already slamming in his chest. He knew exactly with selfless young man would run into a burning house to save a small child. “I’ll get him…” he let them know, while already on the move.

He just really hoped the house would hold a little while longer. He pressed a cloth against his mouth to avoid inhaling all the smoke. The fire was burning all around him and the cracking of the wooden beams could be heard. Quickly he moved through the rooms, the adrenaline pumping through his veins.

It was in the third room that he suddenly could see a figure lying on the ground. A lot of wooden beams around it, the roof had a great hole, and it looked as if whoever it was did fall through it.

Only as Leader was near enough that he could touch the person he could see what his heart had known all along. This was Youngest lying here unconscious. Everything in him screamed that he had to check if he was still alive. But he didn’t have the time. He had to get both of them out of here as fast as he could.

At the same time he wanted to pick up Youngest he heard a loud crack. “No,” Leader pressed out. A support beam of the house must have giving up in that moment. As he couldn’t see where the beam would fall he just knelt above Youngest’s head to protect the boy as good as he could.

And indeed the beam fell exactly in their direction and hit Leader in the back. He had to cry out. Luckily it didn’t hit him full force. He was sure, if that would have been the case, he would have been paralyzed and they both would have died right here.

So he pushed it off himself. Every movement hurt, but he just hadn’t any time to think about it. He had to get Youngest out of here. The flames were getting even higher. Leader picked Youngest up, grunting with pain. But the adrenalin got him moving. And so they made their way out of the house.

As he stumbled outside with his precious load, he saw that all people had already fled, so there would be no help from that part. He moved from the house till he thought it was safe enough to stop. That’s where he laid Youngest down gently and quickly checked his vitals.

There was a whole boulder of weight that lifted from his shoulders, as he found a strong pulse and the boy breathing. He had to take a deep breath of relief. Afterwards he checked Youngest over and found a laceration on his head, which probably was the reason for his unconsciousness, a broken leg and some burns. But still alive, that was the most important thing.

Now he just had to get them both home to Medic to make sure that the boy didn’t have any internal bleeding. He knelt down, ignoring his own pain, and picked Youngest up in bridal style. Youngest’s head rolling against his chest.

It wasn’t the first time he carried the youth like this. But every time he was surprised by the feelings that came up in his heart for his boy.

Day 28 – When The Night's Out To Get You: Nightmares / Chronic insomnia / "I'll stay awake, you can sleep."

Note: This is longer than I though it would be, and took even longer to write - RIP sleep. Don't know how good the setting is coming across, but I hope you like it <3

Silent Support

The first time in happened Youngest had only been with the team for 6 months. Still very unsure of his place in the team and at Leaders side. Scared to be send back to the streets. Scared to make errors to lose the feeling of belonging to someone.

So as he was on a mission with Leader where they had to share a bedroom. And Youngest awoke in the middle of the night from the tossing and turning of Leader. As a pained “No…” followed out of Leaders mouth, Youngest became really concerned.

Was… was Leader having a nightmare? Youngest knew what that was like. He hated it. The whole you didn’t know what was real, the fear, the sweat that came with it. And the worst part was the vulnerability.

You just could not process the real world at the same time, as the fear of the nightmare kept your attention. And even afterwards, it was still so difficult to focus on anything. In his times on the streets, being alone, this was the most dangerous time. But… at the same time it was uncomfortable, even embarrassing to be seen in this state of mind.

It happened to Youngest himself only some weeks ago, and as Leader woke him up, and he had time to process everything, he was so embarrassed, that Leader saw him in that state. He didn’t want to be seen as a child, but as a team member, and he was scared that him having nightmares would convince Leader that he just wasn’t worthy.

But know it seems that their roles were reversed. Should he wake Leader too? But he was really sure, that Leader wouldn’t want him to know of this. Leader seldom showed any emotions, he was always the perfect leader, if he was feeling anything, he didn’t like anyone to know.

And nightmares… nightmares were full of feelings. Nobody knew better than Youngest himself. Nightmares were full of vulnerability. Something Leader never showed him before.

So Youngest came to the conclusion that it would not be right to show Leader that he knew what was happening. So he just laid there and as Leader jolted upright, out of the nightmare, he didn’t move and tried to let it look as if he was still fast asleep.

Only as the heard Leader splashing himself with some water and then leaving the room he was driven into movement. Even if he knew Leader was more than capable of looking after himself, he just wanted him protected, because he knew of the vulnerability after nightmares.

So Youngest just followed him outside, but stayed way out of view and range, so Leader wouldn’t notice him. Keeping silent watch.

The Second time it happened was in the same setting, only a year later, where Youngest already found his place in the team. And was sure that Leader wouldn’t send him away over something small.

So as he heard Leader turning and tossing again, he asked loudly into the room, “Leader? Is everything okay?” This made Leader jolt out of his dream, breathing hard. He needed some time so get back to the presence. So Youngest waited and asked again, “Leader?”

Leader stood up, took some water and said short and coarsely, “Fine. Go back to sleep.” Youngest understood it as it was meant - an order. But after Leader once again left the room to go outside he disregarded it and followed Leader outside. To once again keep a silent watch over his unsuspecting mentor.

The third time was once again a year later. Youngest knew that Leader treasured his presence in the team and at his side, even if he didn’t say so, and hated to show it. But Youngest learnt to understand him really well.

As once again Leader started to toss and turn and murmur pained “no’s”, Youngest wanted to be at his side. Carefully he knelt and touched Leader at his shoulder to wake him with a really low spoken, “Leader, wake up!”

This brought Leader out of his nightmare gentler that jolting upright, but he was still disorientated. “What?” he asked with a really hoarse voice. Youngest made his best try to reassure him, “Everything’s fine. Nightmare?”

Leader didn’t answer his one word question, so Youngest pressed a bottle of water in his hands and stood back up. He already knew Leader would make his way outside to calm himself, but Leader didn’t have to know that he knew that.

So he let Leader leave by himself, and gave him some minutes before following. As he stepped outside he saw Leader sitting on a boulder, head in his hands. Which showed him once again, that it was as always the right choice to watch over him.

But this time he did not content himself with watching from afar. He learnt in the meantime, that while Leader hated to admit to feelings, he had them like every other being. So Leader would not admit to need support, and he didn’t need it, but nevertheless he could provide some and Youngest was sure it would help.

So this time he made his way over to Leader, making some noise on the way, to not startle him. And without any additional words he just sat down next to him at Leader’s feet, his shoulder just lightly touching Leader’s knee. He didn’t say anything. He wanted to just be there.

And after a time he felt a soft really light touch from Leader’s hand on his shoulder. Leader’s way of showing he was appreciated which made Youngest smile softly. Really glad he learnt to understand Leader correctly and happy he was helping after all.

Day 27 – Break the Surface: Coma / Retrograde Amnesia / "You were in an accident."

Clouds

Leader felt as if he was floating. Everything was kind of fuzzy and cloudy and he didn’t really know what to expect. Did he die this time around? Did he use up all his luck and this was whatever the afterlife looked like? He had no feeling how long he had been here, how much time had passed.

He faintly remembered that something happened. Something he should remember. Something important. But he just couldn’t. Faintly he heard a young familiar voice damped through the clouds, “No, Leader, please!” At the same time someone seemed to pull on his hand.

Shortly after that there were additional hands on his chest. Working on him? Was he hurt? What happened? But before he found it in himself to voice these questions, the clouds became so thick, that he didn’t hear or feel anything else.

Time passed, he didn’t know how much. The hands were back again, this time not so urgent. But he felt a light touch at his neck and wrist. Checking his pulse? He heard some quiet sorrowful words softly spoken, “I don’t know what else to do, my friend…” He tried to move, but the clouds were heavy.

Not much later… or was it an eternity, he heard another voice, “I know it is hard my friend.... I can see you are fighting, hold on... please just hold on.... everyone needs you.” And it sounded absolutely wrong. As if the voice wasn’t meat to say something serious, it was made to make people laugh.

Was he fighting as the voice said? For what should he fight? He tried to look in the direction of the voice, but his head didn’t want to move. Fighting to move? As he tried harder a pain in his chest made himself know and the clouds began to pulse in a red light. He didn’t like this. So he stopped his tries and everything became white and soft again.

But the voice continued even more softly, but it seemed to him, that only fragments penetrated the clouds, “Youngest wanted to leave... The boy is so scared for you…. And you have seen Medic…. And you know me... I could not lead them…. It is your job.”

It didn’t make any sense to him. But these names… he knew them… they were important. He tried to remember why there were so important. The more he tried to remember, the more pain he felt. The more clouds became red. But he had to know. This seemed so important.

And there, a touch on his wrist again. So soft and scared. He tried to move again, but the pain became unbearable and he fell back into the clouds.

Time passed again, he didn’t know how much. The next thing he heard weren’t coherent words. It just sounded like someone was crying. The sound was still damped, but it was there. Softy. Faintly.

Once again a feeling of wrongness overcame him. The person he heard shouldn’t be crying. Usually that person was laughing. Loud. Trying to get him laughing too. He had to stop the crying…

Once again he tried to turn his head and the pain came back full force. But he had to ignore it this time. The clouds were once again red, but he had to pull through. He had to.

Slowly he moved and the clouds became thinner and next to his hand he saw a bunch of fluffy dark blonde hair. And from the same direction came the muffled sobs and a painful whisper that was interrupted with sniffs, “you... should have… let me… die instead…”

And then he remembered. He had taken the arrow that was meant for Youngest. There had been no other choice. The pain in his chest flared up really bad, and he had to hold back a cry. Instead Leader gave everything he had left and moved his hand so he could slowly brush back the unkempt blonde hairs and whispered a soundless, “Youngest….”

Day 26 – In Hot Water: Hurt while on the run / Bystander caretaker / "You can turn me in. Just help them. Please."

Hunt on the next Generation

Youngest looked incredulous at the object he held in his hands. Everyone in their field of business was looking for this and that him of all people followed the correct clues and found it first was unbelievable to him. All friends and foes were on the hunt for it.

While he still couldn’t believe it, the first arrow went just over his head. That’s what got him moving. Of course… everyone was now on the hunt for him, he had to keep moving. He went for cover in the forest as fast as he could, but he could hear at least two pursuers.

He was at the same time partially excited and partially fearful, because he was now a really big target. Youngest was still moving all the time. Standing still meant certain death. Multiple arrows impaled in the trees left and right to him. He had to make it to the rendezvous point with the rest of the team quickly.

He had to concentrate on moving. He tried to change directions often while still moving overall to the correct destination. But it seems that his pursuers where equally well trained as he was and they recognized his patterns and waited for him in the correct direction.

He nearly noticed them too late. But his fast reflexes helped Youngest to dodge the attack. Two men nearly twice his age jumped out of the bushes swords already drawn. He tried further to dodge their attacks, remaining defensive, because he didn’t really want to hurt any of them. But it seems that they had no qualms about that, as one of them hit him in his left upper arm.

He winced only shortly, while the first blood flowed downwards on his arm. Luckily for him it wasn’t his sword arm. So he quickly came to the decision that he had to fight back to defend himself.

The attackers were taken aback as he suddenly switched into attack mode and he had the first guy out of commission with a hit to his sword hand, before they understood what was happening. The second tried to match him for a few blows, but became scared to take him on alone as it became clear that he had far better skills with a sword than any other 17 year old.

Both of them fled and hollered for reinforcements. Youngest put away his sword and took a second to get his breathing under control. His right hand pressed into his bleeding wound and he let out a paint hiss. He had to keep moving, before others found him. He would not always have the luck to get out of these confrontations with a simple bleeding cut.

And the team was waiting for him.

Day 25 – Respiratory Distress: Coughing up blood / Sick and injured / "Don't make me laugh, it hurts."

Note: Thanks so much for the love that my fic for Day 24 got, all the likes and rebloggs made me really happy. <3 This promp on the other side was not my favourite...

Disaster

This mission was an absolute disaster, at the end it was a miracle that they all made it out. Second was lying unconscious on the cot behind him, seriously hurt but not in imminent danger anymore. While Medic now worked on an arrow wound in Youngest’s shoulder, trying to stop the bleeding. And Leader… he was still out there, but he too was hurt, just not as badly as everyone else.

Medic himself felt lightly dizzy and every breath hurt, but he just couldn’t stop. The team really needed him right now. And there wasn’t any time. So he pulled himself together and cleaned Youngest’s wound. As only the suturing was missing his vision started to blur for a few seconds. He shook his head and squeezed his eyes shut.

This really needed to be done. Just 8 stiches or so… it shouldn’t really take that long. Damn. Why was this so hard… Medic’s fingers were trembling, and in the end he couldn’t even remember how he got the last few stiches done. He didn’t know how long he sat there, before his brain remembered, that he still had to look after Leader.

Leader often dismissed his own health and Medic was sure that he hid something again. But as he wanted to get up, his legs didn’t follow the direction he wanted to go. As he was hit by another stronger dizzy spell he stumbled and only caught himself with one hand against the wall hunched over.

This was the exact moment Leader limped into the room. As fast as he could he made his way over to Medic and tried to support him, while asking concerned: “Medic? What is it?”

Medic couldn’t really answer. As he tried, his body protested with a really deep cough that was extremely painful. Leader held him at his shoulders, as Medic put his hand before his mouth as another cough broke out of his mouth, followed by a painful groan. “Medic?” Leader inquired again.

But as Medic pulled his hand back, both of them could see Medics hand sprinkled with blood. The hit that he took in his ribs must have been stronger and more punishing that he thought. After that he felt Leaders hand gently guiding him to the next bed and he couldn’t think straight anymore. “Please lay down, before you fall…,” admonished Leader him concerned.

“But… but your wounds…,” Medic tried to inject, but was stopped by coughs again. Leader held up his hand in a silent command for silence, and said, “Do not concern yourself with that. I will be fine till the extended team arrives in a few hours. What can I do for you? How bad is it really? Do the others need anything till tomorrow?”

But Leader was only met with silence as unconsciousness had claimed Medic at last.

Day 24 – Uncharacteristic Behavior: Clinginess / Falling asleep on Caretaker / "Are you… feeling okay?"

Swapped roles

As Leader laid him his arm over the shoulders and laughed loudly with him, Youngest knew something was amiss. It was wrong. Leader hated to initiate physical contact without any reason. And Leader did not laugh loudly, not without a really good reason. Youngest loved being the one to coax a chuckle out of Leader, but this… this was just plain wrong.

Youngest just tensed up. Yes, they were here at the party to get some information and they have to behave fitting to their environment, but as Leader leaned more weight on his shoulders his instincts screamed at him, that something was terribly wrong. But how could he solve the situation without making a scene?

Youngest tried to give nothing away, while he thought through his options. He had to talk to Leader and find out what was wrong. Another option would be to alert Second and Medic, that something went wrong, but that wasn’t really a possibility without going outside, and leaving Leader alone if he was in any way compromised was absolutely not an option at all.  

So the only available option was getting Leader outside with him, but without attracting attention. To get it done quickly he would have to act as if he needed help, nobody would suspect anything if he as a juvenile was feeling bad at such a party. He did not have a reputation to lose.

So he took his acting skills to test and clutched at his abdomen and whined to Leader, “I’m not… feeling so good… I think, I… can we go outside?” The other people they were talking to looked derogative at him, but he didn’t care. Leader looked at him, but his eyes weren’t as sharp as Youngest was used to seeing, kind of unfocused, so he pulled on Leader’s sleeve like a little child to get him moving.

It took a long moment till Leader stumbled after him, and Youngest leant against him, relieved that they were moving. Leader’s steps were more than unsure, so Youngest tried to support him, while trying to let it look from the outside that is was the other way around.

As they reached the doors and made it outside away from all spying eyes, Youngest turned to Leader and asked him, “Leader? What’s up? Are you… feeling okay?" He stumbled over his words in the end, because as he tried to look into Leader’s eyes, they didn’t really want to focus on him. He knew already, that Leader was not alright and he had to get help.

At that moment Leader wrapped both his arms around him, in a hug that turned more into Youngest bearing most of Leader’s weight. “Leader?” Youngest asked anxiously. He knew that Leader didn’t drink any alcohol, did someone give him some, or was it a drug, poison? He didn’t really get an answer to his questions from Leader, who just laid his head on Youngest’s shoulder with closed eyes, put even more weight on him and murmured quietly, words blending into another, “Good… good kid… so proud…”

Youngest got wet eyes. Now he knew something was definitely not right. Leader would never say something like this… especially not out loud. It… It felt still good to hear, but he was so concerned and the mix of emotions additionally to him being in charge was overwhelming.

Quickly he got his communicator out and sent a distress call to Second and Medic, while fighting to keep Leader standing and his own emotions under control.

Day 23 - All Hands On Deck: Multiple caretakers / Travelling while injured / "Hold on a little longer."

Note: This is a direct continuation from the story Sacrifice from Day 5. I got my first comments on the post from yesterday, and they made me sooo happy, thanks so much joomju and suchprettypieces !!

Hard road ahead

The road ahead was going to be painful, but they needed to make some haste. Medic had worked sure and fast to stabilize Leader after he got hit by that arrow. But he couldn’t take the arrow out as long as they were this far from their home base. The risk that he wouldn’t be able to stop the bleeding out here was simply too great.

But nevertheless Leader had to struggle for every breath, the pain that he had to be in was just not imaginable, but he had strictly refused to be put under. Youngest was still in position on the other side of Leader. He had helped where he could. He still had tears in his eyes, but he hold onto Leader’s hand as if it was the lifeline binding Leader to this world.

And maybe, Medic thought, maybe that wasn’t that far from the truth. Both Second and he knew Leader far longer, than Youngest was even part of the team. But for an undefined and unknown reason, Leader, who would never admit to having feelings, had a very special place in his heart for Youngest.

Medic was sure, that Leader was giving his damn best to be strong for the boy. And he was nearly sure, that Leader wouldn’t leave as long as the boy was near. So after he had done everything he could, he instructed Youngest to alert him, should anything change, and left to find Second, who had held watch over them and scouted for more traps.

Together with Second he then built a stretcher to transport Leader. Second was exactly as worried as everyone else, but as always it was his job to keep everyone’s spirit high. “How are you keeping up?” he asked Medic. Medic just showed him his hands and whispered lowly, “I really hate to have blood from team members on my hands… but as long as he is still breathing I am doing my job and I will be fine…”

Second just looked him deep in the eyes and said, “If you need something, I am here, okay?” Afterwards Medic got pulled into a short hug.

As they were ready to get back to Leader and Youngest, Medic laid Second a hand on his shoulder, and with a little nod in Youngest direction he said, “When we make it back home, can you please take care of him? He is holding up remarkably well, but it is just his mask. He his emotionally drained, I am just waiting for the break down.” The ‘I will have my hands full with Leader’ stayed silent between them. Second gave him a pained smile and the promise to do that.

Afterwards they all worked together to get Leader on the stretcher, but all the bumping and jostling got even stoic Leader to cry out. Youngest face lost a lot of colour as he squeezed Leader’s hand and murmured to him, “All will be fine. Hold on a little longer. We will get you home, and Medic will fix everything.”

Medic had to swallow hard. He knew the chances weren’t that good, but the feelings that assaulted him, with seeing Youngest putting on that reassuring mask while dying inside, made it even harder for him to stay positive.

Day 22 - Oh So Inconvenient: Trapped inside by weather / Worsening infection / "I didn't know where else to go."

Guilt

The sky cried. Big ugly tears. And with it came a thunderstorm so bad, nobody should have been outside without risking his life.

And together with the sky Youngest cried too. He had just learnt that Leader’s wound had got badly infected and he had to be cut open again. Second had tried to give the news as positive as such news could be given, but it didn’t soften the blow at all.

After they had succeeded to get Leader back to base alive, after he was struck by that arrow meant for Youngest, everyone had had hope. And while Youngest still felt guilty, he tried his best to still be part of the team, to get as much work as possible done for everyone, to be helpful, to make up for… for what he did… for everything.

But now? Youngest heard the news from Second and his world came crashing down on him. If Leader died it would be his responsibility, his fault. The guilt consumed him. He wouldn’t be able to stand being around the team, seeing them grieving, and they wouldn’t say it, but they would hate him, because it was his fault.

Tears sprang to his eyes and he pressed out a near silent, “I am sorry”. Then Youngest turned and bolted from Second. He fled. He had to get away. Nobody would want him here anyway, if he were to be responsible for Leader’s death.

“Youngest, wait!” Second called out after him. But he didn’t stop, he couldn’t. Youngest didn’t know where his steps brought him, but as the cold wind and the rain hit him full force into the face, and the rain mixed with his tears, he realized he made his way outside in weather where he shouldn’t be.

He hesitated only shortly, before dashing out into the storm. Youngest was instantly soaked to the bone. His vision so blurry, that he didn’t really know where he went, so it didn’t came as a surprise that he stumbled over some roots and fell hart to the ground. The lightning flashed over his head but he didn’t found the strength to get back up. If Leader died, then he should die too, is would be just fair.

It didn’t take Second long to find him. As Youngest was enveloped in a big coat, he was sure he must be dreaming. Second pulled him into a hug and just murmured into his ear, “Stupid boy”. And as the lightning crashed near them into a tree Second shielded him with his own body, and Youngest didn’t understand. Why Second didn’t let him to die? Shouldn’t they all be happy, if he wasn’t there anymore?

But in contrast, Second pulled him up and guided him back into the base. Youngest felt completely out of it, and let everything just happen.

Note: This was the hardest prompt till now... I kind of reused something I written kind of similar in german already...

Day 21 - Hold Your Tongue: Fighting with a friend / Parting words regret / "I'm sorry, I'm just… not thinking right."

Too much

Medic has done anything he could for Youngest, but with the meagre equipment he had available there wasn’t much he could do. It had been so close, closer than he had first thought at finding him. He nearly had lost him. This alone was enough to throw all his feelings into turmoil.

But as they learnt that an old teammate of them was responsible for the attack on Youngest, he first didn’t want to believe. As long as he was tending Youngest he could suppress the thoughts, but as soon as his hands had nothing to do anymore, the realisation hit full force. I was simply too much.

Additionally they could not reach Leader and they didn’t know if he was attacked too, or if something else was keeping him. “I can’t believe that B betrayed us,” Medic murmured while laying his head in his hands.

That’s when Second came up behind him. “Are you really that sure, that it was B?” Second ask quietly. This easy question let Medic’s emotions boil over. He stood and faced Second with fury in his voice, “The surveillance shows him leaving Youngest laying in his own blood… Youngest himself told me so before losing consciousness. And look at that boy. He lost so much blood! He nearly died! Do you understand?! Look at him!”

Medic had to take a big breath. He was infuriated, not with Second, although he was the one who bore the brunt of it right know, but with B and with Leader, because they didn’t even know where he was in all of this. After the fury came hopelessness, because the situation became so dire so fast. Tears sprang to his eyes.

With blurred vision he saw Second stepping forward to him instantly raising his hands apologetically. Medic’s realisation that they nearly lost Youngest, that they maybe have lost Leader already just hit him full force after voicing it out loud. Second gave him a second to pull back if he wished, but Medic just let himself fall into the offered hug, crying openly.

Second wrapped his arms around Medic and whispered to him, that everything would be fine, that he would know nobody where Youngest would be in better hands, that Leader would come back, that he would never leave them and especially Youngest behind if he could do anything about that.

Medic needed the warm words so badly. Through sobs he murmured in Second’s chest, "I'm sorry, I'm just… not thinking right."
