Itâs so funny to me that Javert dislikes reading newspapers(as well as books and thinking). man just looked at information as a concept and said actually I would prefer not to.
They were a team: Valjean stole a loaf of bread, and of course you need butter for that.
Twenty thousand years of language development were necessary to make this joke.
I get up early, I go to bed early, I work [on Les MiserablĂŠs] all day. I have a sort of natural armchair in a rock for writing at a beautiful spot called Firmain Bay; I do not read the seven hundred and forty articles published against me during the last three months.

I have a new favourite Marius
i love that jean valjeans alter ego is monsieur madeleine. madeleine is a french muffin. he is called mister muffin. how could this man possibly be a crook. why would javert ever suspect this man of any crime.
#IMAGINE JAVERT STORMING DOWN THE STREETS OF PARIS#LIFTING PEOPLE BY THEIR SHIRTFRONTS SCREAMINGÂ #DO YOU KNOW THE MUFFIN MANÂ #IM CrYING HOW DO I DEAL WITH THISÂ
Have you seen Les Mis on stage? Have you read the brick?
nice try. les mis is a movie that came out in 2012.
itâs a book written by victor hugo you dumb fuck
his name is hugh jackman
(Image ID: screenshot of two replies by @alicedraws-kostyalevinâ. saying: Funnily enough eponine works for thenardier but doesnât actually sacrifice herself for him (or at least, not anymore) but gavroche almost dies for him, and he doesnât even recognize who it was. Absolutely brutal. Les mis has a thing? for people recognizing others and there must be some symbolism here that I never thought about.)
(Context: this post about he parallels between Eponine and Javert)
I never thought about it until just now either and youâve made me realizeâ Javertâs weird power in Les Mis is just, his ability to recognize people?
Javert has a borderline magical ability to know who everyone Really Is, to know everyoneâs True Names, regardless of their disguises.
Thereâs a common fandom joke that Javert is bad at recognizing people, but in canon itâs the exact opposite. Javertâs whole Thing is that he sees through disguises and recognizes the people that no one else is able to recognize, the people that everyone else forgets and overlooks.
And instead of using that power for good he uses it for evil. Javert could use his borderline magical skills to help all these forgotten people, but instead he uses it to condemn them and make them all suffer.
Javert even arrogantly shows off this semi-magical skill during the Gorbeau House ambush. All the members of the gang are masked; Javert orders them to keep their masks on, and then lists off their names one by one, to prove that he knows who they are even when theyâre disguised.
âWhy?â for the drama of it all
The six pinioned ruffians were standing, and still preserved their spectral mien; all three besmeared with black, all three masked.
âKeep on your masks,â said Javert.
And passing them in review with a glance of a Frederick II. at a Potsdam parade, he said to the three âchimney-buildersâ:â
âGood day, Bigrenaille! good day, Brujon! good day, Deuxmilliards!â
Then turning to the three masked men, he said to the man with the meat-axe:â
âGood day, Gueulemer!â
And to the man with the cudgel:â
âGood day, Babet!â
And to the ventriloquist:â
âYour health, Claquesous.â
God Javert is such a diva
And as mentioned on the other post: no one recognizes Eponine. Cosette sees adult Eponine and doesnât recognize her/thinks sheâs just a random boy, Marius doesnât recognize Eponine even after she takes a bullet for him, Thenardier doesnât recognize Eponine when he sees her in the Rue Plumet garden, etc.
But when Javert is about to be executed, heâs like âoh, itâs her. I know her.â
âJavert gazed askance at the body and, profoundly calm, said in a low tone:
âIt strikes me that I know that girl.â
And when Valjean drags a muddied half-dead body away from the barricadesâ Javert recognizes it as Marius:
He bent over, drew from his pocket a handkerchief which he moistened in the water and with which he then wiped Mariusâ blood-stained brow.
âThis man was at the barricade,â said he in a low voice and as though speaking to himself. âHe is the one they called Marius.â
(ok I literally never noticed the parallel between the way he recognizes Eponine and Mariusâs bodiesâŚâŚâŚâŚ.quietly saying âoh I know this personâ to himself in a low voice, while Valjean looks on)
But the biggest example is obviously Valjean. Javert recognizes Valjean when no one else does, when everyone else thinks heâs crazy for recognizing him, when everyone else thinks a mayor couldnât possibly be a felon, etc. Heâs the only one who recognizes Valjean when heâs wealthy and a mayor, not just when heâs a prisoner dressed in rags.
At the Champmathieu trial no one believes Valjeanâs testimony. They think heâs gone mad, even his own prison-mates donât seem to know him, they think he canât possibly be Valjean because heâs too rich and educated, etc. Valjean gets Upset and says:
âI wish Javert were here; he would recognize me.â Nothing can reproduce the sombre and kindly melancholy of tone which accompanied these words.
And I donât know how feel about this aspect of Javert????? But itâsâŚ.a Thing!!!
@alicedraws-kostyalevin replied:OOH thatâs true! the only time he fails to recognize valjean right away was when he was already derailed, he was so off balance that he didnât recognize the man out of the sewer. I was gonna make a joke about it being his acute sense of smell but Gavroche also seems to have this ability too. Maybe he even kind of recognized his little brothers? Theyâre so honest that they can sort of manifest the truth when they speak isnât it
Yeah! Suddenly Javertâs extreme weird Reaction to recognizing Valjean in that moment makes even more senseâ Javert normally always recognizes people, itâs his whole Thing.
But then he suddenly doesnât recognize Valjean, he doesnât know who Valjean is anymoreâ both literally and metaphorically!! Itâs symbolic!
And yeah youâre right, I feel like it has something to do with Javertâs weird honestyâŚ.the only person Javert is capable of lying to is himself, and somehow that weird honesty makes him good at finding out the true identities of other people.
Also lol at the idea of Javert literally sniffing out criminals, @everyonewasabird said the same thing in their tags:
#itâs because heâs a dog right#of course it is#i feel like thereâs a relationship between this power he has and âcuriosityâ#which this novel is absolutely againstâferreting things out about people is Bad and Wrong nearly always#but this identification feels like an instinctive version of that
And technically I think that IS the canon explanation XD
Javert recognizing people is constantly compared to the way a dog sniffs out/senses the people itâs looking for.
A bestial instinct, though pure and upright, like all instincts, which creates antipathies and sympathies, which fatally separates one nature from another nature, which does not hesitate, which feels no disquiet, which does not hold its peace, and which never belies itself, clear in its obscurity, infallible, imperious, intractable, stubborn to all counsels of the intelligence and to all the dissolvents of reason, and which, in whatever manner destinies are arranged, secretly warns the man-dog of the presence of the man-cat,
Basically:
Small brain: Javert didnât recognize Valjean coming out of the sewers because he was covered in sewage.
Medium Brain: Javert has an almost Magical ability to know who people are even in the dark/when theyâre disguised. He didnât recognize Valjean coming out of the sewers because his understanding of the world has been shaken so much that he doesnât know who Valjean is anymore on a literal or metaphorical level. everything that was simple to him before is now chaos and confusion. itâs symbolic.
GALAXY BRAIN: Javert didnât recognize Valjean coming out of the sewers because he recognizes people using his hunting-dog-fursona sense of smell, but Valjean was so covered in sewage he couldnât sniff him out

today i found out that victor hugo has had more sex than possibly almost any other human that has lived on this planet.Â
he had so much sex his biographers straight up gave up trying to document all of his sexual partners. he was reported to fuck up to 3-9 times a day. He had a secret sex diary written in code. He had âofficialâ and âunofficialâ mistresses. One estimate was that he had ~200 sexual partners in two years.Â
Icon.Â
donât forget that on the day of his funeral all the brothels in Paris were closed because every single prostitute in the whole goddamn city was busy mourning him
Hey quick question what the fuck
the man reported on his hookups in his diary using latin code words and 2 million people attended his funeral, if that isnt balling idk what is
victor hugo has been dead for 133 slutty, slutty years

Happy Barricade Day!
19th century books will kill off a main character in one sentence and then spend 3 pages describing a street
the winding pavement had an unearthly chill lurking about it. the cobblestones were crooked and placed at random intervals, weathered by thousands of footsteps and years past over them. water pooled in a nearby gutter. the steady drip from the pipe exchoed through the empty alley. hubert was fucking stabbed. the sidewalk was cracked and oldÂ
Itâs ok, you can say Victor âparisian sewer aficionadoâHugo
