On writing a character with a niche hobby (that you are unfamiliar with):
For example, one of my character's a guitarist; I know nothing about guitar, but I want him to seem authentic. So these are the tips I try to use:
Watch one or two Youtube videos on said hobby. You don't need to go on a fifty-hour deep-dive unless a. you actually want to. or b. this hobby is important to the plot.
Show the character setting up gear, fixing mistakes, and practicing skills.
Study how real hobbyists talk and borrow a few terms they use. π Youtube
Don't add a hobby as a one-note quirky personality traitβlet the hobby shape the characterβs habits, mood, and choices.
Readers care more about how it affects the character than perfect technical detail.
shoutout to the words "overmorrow" and "ereyesterday". english losing these words was stupid. "the day after tomorrow" "the day before yesterday" clunky-ass constructions. revolting. i'm bringing overmorrow and ereyesterday back in my idiolect and there is nothing you can do about it
