something that strikes me about 70s-80s movies is how often there are just like, Characters in them? total background roles and incidental cast members that all still have some unique quirk or memorable traits about them. it really makes them feel a lot more tangible, having these weirdos reminding you that the main cast are not the only people who exist but are merely just the focal point of THEIR story

I watched Miracle Mile (1988) for the first time last night - good fucking movie - and in this one late night diner scene all of the extras in play consist of the following:

1) Old woman who spilled cards all over herself after falling asleep during Solitaire

2) Bookish rookie airline stewardess nervously practicing her in-flight safety routine

3) Transwoman and haggard looking businessman having an argument about directions on the metro rail

4) Old sexist mechanic and his loud mouthed understudy heckling a blond pixie government woman with a brick briefcase computer

Most of these characters have less then five minutes of total screentime in this thing but they’re all odd in a very human way, and the film just keeps doing this for every other incidental character we meet. A lot of films from this era are just like that. I feel like there’s a certain restraint in not wanting to make your background cast steal any potential spotlight from the actual important characters but I just love when minor parts are cast as total weirdos, it feels like it fleshes the whole space out.

The independent movement certainly is cushioning a BIT of the blow that the current total collapse the game industry is going through, but it can only do so much. The system of indie games just isn’t strong enough to support the HUNDREDS of people being bled from the industry every MONTH who are now having to learn that “fourth scriptwriter” or “hair lighting engineer” are not real jobs that actually exist anywhere outside the bloat of the AAA sphere.

I just feel so bad for Compulsion man. People forget that for every Toys For Bob (good graces company that’s still allowed to play toys with a bunch of beloved and high-selling IPs) and Double Fine (decades long industry legends that can pump out a game every two years or so) that could potentially spin off, there’s going to be about a dozen mid-sized studios like Compulsion dropped every year that just won’t have NEAR the name recognition or raw manpower to keep their heads above water in the vacuum of independent development like that. Obviously I wish them all the best but I doubt many of these groups will even survive to the release of their next game, let alone having to PRAY that it sells enough copies to match the stuff they were putting out when they were being advertised under the banner of one of the largest corporations on earth.
